Conservative paper targets Palin for endorsement

The New Hampshire Union Leader published a scathing Op-ed on the front page of Wednesday’s newspaper.

(CNN) – Days after her first foray this election cycle into New Hampshire politics, Sarah Palin is getting a chilly reception from one of the crucial presidential primary state's most conservative and influential newspapers.

In a blistering Op-Ed on the front page of the New Hampshire Union-Leader's Wednesday edition, publisher Joseph McQuaid writes the former Alaska governor and vice presidential nominee knows little about the Granite State and even less about its residents.

"Former Gov. Palin isn't making these endorsements because, as she claims, she has spent time in New Hampshire and thus knows that the people here are a lot like Alaskans. She spent a few hours here on one day during the 2008 Presidential election. That's still more time than she spent getting to know Ayotte, but it takes quite a bit longer to know New Hampshire," McQuaid writes in the editorial.

Palin waded into the New Hampshire political landscape Monday when she backed former state Attorney General Kelly Ayotte's Senate bid. The "Mama Grizzly," as Palin called Ayotte, is the frontrunner in a primary race against three other Republicans. Her endorsement was greeted with enthusiasm from Ayotte, herself a social conservative running in a state where Republicans are generally more concerned with fiscal policies.

The endorsement was Palin's first political move in the state, which will once again hold the first-in-the-nation Republican presidential primary in February 2012. No other potential 2012 presidential candidate has weighed in on the contested primary.

"Kelly is the strongest commonsense conservative who can win in the fall," Palin wrote on her Facebook page. "I knew I liked her when I met her earlier this year, and I know this Granite Grizzly will represent New Hampshire with distinction in Washington."

Palin has already backed midterm candidates in the other key early states of Iowa and South Carolina, but has not visited New Hampshire since 2008. As the No. 2 on Sen. John McCain's presidential ticket, Palin visited the Granite State once in mid-October of that year.

A spokesman for Ayotte said the campaign is happy to have the endorsement - despite Union Leader editorial - but stressed Ayotte has strong grassroots support in the state.

"The paper is correct that the election will be decided by New Hampshire voters, and Kelly is happy to have more grassroots support and New Hampshire support than all the other candidates combined," said Communications Director Jeff Grappone. "The reality is Kelly Ayotte is the choice of New Hampshire Republicans and conservatives."

Grappone also said the campaign would welcome Palin to come campaign in the state on their behalf.

But McQuaid, whose paper has long played a key role in shaping the state's key presidential primary, says New Hampshire voters should pay little heed to Palin.

"Don't fret over what a "Mama Grizzly" from Alaska does," he writes. "Right now, Granite Staters have more to worry about in keeping bears away from bird feeders."

Howie Kurtz, a Washington Post media critic and CNN contributor, said the Union-Leader editorial is emblematic of the state's independent streak.

"The publisher's column is significant because it plays the home-state card–that is, who is this outsider from Alaska to tell our Republicans how to vote?–in a state that prides itself on its independence," he said.

The paper endorsed the McCain-Palin ticket in 2008, though made no mention of Palin in that editorial.

Glad to see that even some conservatives can wade through the BS. She goes to NH to endorse someone she doesn't even know and thinks these people can't recognize her transparancy? The "Grizzley" thing is worn out, Sarah; you're folksy sound bites just aren't that cute anymore except to your fringe base of loons.

It's about time someone tell Silly Sarah that her endorsements hurt more than help. But I'm fine with that. The more she opens her mouth, the more apparent it is even to some conservatives how out of touch this woman is with reality. We said this back in 2008. Silly Sarah is no Hillary Clinton.

Love it! The Manchester Union Leader may be a lot of things, but it sure knows a phony and political opportunist when it sees one. Palin is a first class jerk and continues to prove it nearly every day!

Any endorsement from Palin would only cause the candidate to lose my vote.

Kudos for the New Hampshire editor for seeing her for what she is , a blow hard , who spouts off about things she knows nothing about!
I am so tired of her" mama grizzley" stuff , she thinks "real America " is not very smart!
    But we are!

It's fairly apparent she doesn't KNOW much about anything, but she is extremely able to lie about almost anything. When will she just go away?

The ex-half governor of Alaska may just end up being an Albatross if she keeps making endorsements based on gender rather than substance. The "momma grizely" thing is catchy but those catchy, gimmiky profiles tend to wear thin when faced with someone of real character.

This woman truly hasn't a clue! Her ego takes her far beyond that which she is capable. In the not too distant future, she will implode and disappear and we will thankfully not even remember her name.

The know nothing, money and publicity grabbing Palin will do whatever it takes to try and make herself relevant with the end goal of profiting off her forays. So much for her "faith" in Jesus.

WOW!!! I am sure New Yorkers feel the same way.
    15 minutes, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, the fake gold is fading.
If only other newpapers and wire services would do the same.
Independent streak or not this is going to send the AK quitter to her room to cry and more botox.
Finally somebody in her own party has the guts to tell her to keep her useless trap shut!!!
i guess most women are not the only ones not impressed about the mama grizzly ad from the shrilla' from Wasilla.
It doesn't sound as if the Union really cares much for this woman going back to 2008. they caught on pretty quickly about the crap that t mccain dug up in AK.

  15. Former Republican, but never again!

It's about time that a conservative voice takes on Palin. Her Mama Grizzly act is really getting old already. Has she endorsed a man over a woman yet? Sexist idiot!

Good for the Union! I've heard good said of Ayotte too but as a former New Hampshire-ite I don't think Ms. Palin should be blowing into town with blessings for any one candidate as if she knew very much.

That is Sarah for you. She would like you to believe she knows more than she really knows. When she says something it becomes factual, to her at least. How long will it take for her followers to see through her. If she were a plain Jane, she would not get a second thought from these people. This is so shallow.

Palin does not anything about the lower 48 states. She doesn't know the history, the culture, the people, and she can't even speak correct English.
She is not one of us. She is an extremist , like Glenn Beck and the other Fox clowns, who just want to pretend to be important so they inject themselves where they are not wanted, welcome, or needed.

BTW- Has Fox apologized yet for editing and reporting the completely altered and false story about Sherrod who they got fired from the Agriculture dept??? Got caught lying again and this time making up a racist story that never happened. And we are supposed to believe this Republican propaganda machine is not racist and their tea baggers are not racist? Fox is a shameful disgrace and should have his FCC license pulled. They are no "news" organization. They and the Republican Party are an official hate group.

You know, Palin is never going to be personally popular with people who have time on their hands to write op-ed pieces.

What's curious about this interpretation by CNN is they are pitting the influence of Sarah Palin against some guy who writes an op-ed for a Union Newspaper.

One doesn't have to be from a state to have an opinion on it. The right-wing ideologies which Margaret Thatcher put forth to save Britain involved what one filmmaker called "drastic surgery, bitter medicine." Did Margaret Thatcher have to live in every aspect of Britain before saving all of it from union ruins?

Union thugs are terrified of Palin, corporation-heads are terrified of Palin, the elite and heads of universities are terrified of Palin.

She doesn't play the games they like to play. She serves and promotes politicians who serve their people and ONLY their people.

We are turning the country upside down and like it or not, liberals will be forced to adapt to the conservative way.....they will take their dose of bitter medicine, too. If they want a piece of the American dream, they'll have to use their efforts to work harder without state cushion.

It is THE ONLY WAY we can prosper. This is no other recipe that will do it.
