Conservative paper targets Palin for endorsement

The New Hampshire Union Leader published a scathing Op-ed on the front page of Wednesday’s newspaper.

(CNN) – Days after her first foray this election cycle into New Hampshire politics, Sarah Palin is getting a chilly reception from one of the crucial presidential primary state's most conservative and influential newspapers.

In a blistering Op-Ed on the front page of the New Hampshire Union-Leader's Wednesday edition, publisher Joseph McQuaid writes the former Alaska governor and vice presidential nominee knows little about the Granite State and even less about its residents.

"Former Gov. Palin isn't making these endorsements because, as she claims, she has spent time in New Hampshire and thus knows that the people here are a lot like Alaskans. She spent a few hours here on one day during the 2008 Presidential election. That's still more time than she spent getting to know Ayotte, but it takes quite a bit longer to know New Hampshire," McQuaid writes in the editorial.

Palin waded into the New Hampshire political landscape Monday when she backed former state Attorney General Kelly Ayotte's Senate bid. The "Mama Grizzly," as Palin called Ayotte, is the frontrunner in a primary race against three other Republicans. Her endorsement was greeted with enthusiasm from Ayotte, herself a social conservative running in a state where Republicans are generally more concerned with fiscal policies.

The endorsement was Palin's first political move in the state, which will once again hold the first-in-the-nation Republican presidential primary in February 2012. No other potential 2012 presidential candidate has weighed in on the contested primary.

"Kelly is the strongest commonsense conservative who can win in the fall," Palin wrote on her Facebook page. "I knew I liked her when I met her earlier this year, and I know this Granite Grizzly will represent New Hampshire with distinction in Washington."

Palin has already backed midterm candidates in the other key early states of Iowa and South Carolina, but has not visited New Hampshire since 2008. As the No. 2 on Sen. John McCain's presidential ticket, Palin visited the Granite State once in mid-October of that year.

A spokesman for Ayotte said the campaign is happy to have the endorsement - despite Union Leader editorial - but stressed Ayotte has strong grassroots support in the state.

"The paper is correct that the election will be decided by New Hampshire voters, and Kelly is happy to have more grassroots support and New Hampshire support than all the other candidates combined," said Communications Director Jeff Grappone. "The reality is Kelly Ayotte is the choice of New Hampshire Republicans and conservatives."

Grappone also said the campaign would welcome Palin to come campaign in the state on their behalf.

But McQuaid, whose paper has long played a key role in shaping the state's key presidential primary, says New Hampshire voters should pay little heed to Palin.

"Don't fret over what a "Mama Grizzly" from Alaska does," he writes. "Right now, Granite Staters have more to worry about in keeping bears away from bird feeders."

Howie Kurtz, a Washington Post media critic and CNN contributor, said the Union-Leader editorial is emblematic of the state's independent streak.

"The publisher's column is significant because it plays the home-state card–that is, who is this outsider from Alaska to tell our Republicans how to vote?–in a state that prides itself on its independence," he said.

The paper endorsed the McCain-Palin ticket in 2008, though made no mention of Palin in that editorial.

Need an endorsement from Sarah? Just send a self addressed envelope loaded with cash and a few brief talking points about yourself to give the allusion that she actually spent time with you when she publicly endorses you.

Perhaps this is why, even as a liberal in New Hampshire, I find her popularity mystifying. New England is not so socially conservative as Palin, and thus her rightousness falls on deaf ears here.

We expect folks to mind their own business on social matters, at the very least. SP wants to control social behavior, and clearly can't even do that at home.

The Liberal leaning Left simply hates everything Sarah Palin does or says......and "jumps on with all fours" with any negative and nasty thing they can think of (and they can think of a lot) but the truth is; she is 99% right! But why the hate? It is because they know the only way for the conservative movement to beat the Obambi machine is with a Conservative Female!

    Dont you just hate it??

Sarah Palin would endorse Lindsay Lohan for public office if she thought it would give her an opportunity to say some catty, snide and ill-informed comment on President Obama and his supporters.

She has become such an embarrassment to the Republican Party that I hope she is nominated to run for president in 2012.

She spends far too much time talking to idiots and extremists that she has had no time to research any of the issues she has commented on, and her stupidity is showing more and more.

Thank goodness she is not our vice president.

Sarah Palin is gonna do to the GOP in 2012 what Ralph Nader did to the Democrats in 2000. It'll be fun to watch, anyways...

Let me clue all you journalists (both conservative and
liberal ) in on something. Contrary to what you believe,
people in America are the same in every state.
I said all Americans are the same. Doesn't matter what
state you live in. People are clannish against outsiders,
there's always a soap opera going on in every circle,
there's racial bias , sexual bias, religious bias, winners,
    and losers.
To say people in Alaska are different than people in New York
or Alabama or Texas is just plain immature and shows a
    lack of wisdom.

    Palin = idiot
Until you understand that you will keep inviting her to talk on a multitude of subjects she knows nothing about.

One day you'll realize her down-homeless humor is nothing but, an act she puts on because it sells to the NASCAR, WWE, and Jerry Springer crowd of inbred.

Finally someone has pulled their head out of Sarah Palin's butt and realized what a joke she is. I don't need a bachelor degree'd, former beauty queen as my President (personally I wouldn't have her managing a fast food restaurant, but I digress....)

Obvious, unstated motivation on the paper's part acknowledged, I suddenly have a new-found respect for the Union-Leader! It's *not* just for covering the kitchen floor with a new puppy in the house! ;-)

You give the girl (Palin) an internet connection and and a computer and all of a sudden she can sit around her house in her PJ's and slippers issuing her whims of brilliance on topics that she has no real basis of knowledge. I'm glad to see that she knows what kind of people will do well in Washington since she has spent so much time there... oh but wait, she hasn't even had one day of working there. Remember, just because your read it on the web doesn't make it the truth.

Wish that Palin would return to Alaska and stay there. Just hearing her name on the news or reading it online or in the newspaper makes me sick to my stomach. Hope the fascination with this publicity seeking person with not much brain power dies soon.

In her posting on Facebook, Sarah herself writes "In both of our states, we like to get to know the people running for office, look them in the eye, and judge their character." So the editor decides to repeat her words in his op-ed and somehow ignore his source. Some people just love to disagree even when they agree.

She may know very little about New Hampshire, but she knows even less about the USA. I still think back to that intervew with Katie Couric and I am embarrassed for her.

As an independant why doesn't Palin once back a " non leading " candadate. Is it because she wants to ride on the coat tails to a win ? I am not sure why she does what she does. It's easy to be a Tiger Woods fan and brag about his wins, and then hide when things get ugly. Kinda like what she tried to do with McCain. Now that things look like she may have a winner she endorses them, odd.........And all this coming from someone whom quit her own job as Governor, typical politician.

Quick, we need to focus attention away from the fact that Democrats are going to lose big in November. I know, let's bring up Sarah Palin again. Why? She's not even in politics right now. Who cares; she's a lightening rod for the left and we need to do everything we can to breathe some life into the Democratic Party.

Same ol', same ol'.....pick a popular Republican anywhere, go there and do a "look at me" speech on the pretense of campaigning for someone she doesn't even know. Her 15 minutes is stretching to 20 minutes, but will end soon as more and more people are realizing how shallow she is. How does she know that a candidate will do a good job in Washington? She doesn't know Washington or, for that matter, the government itself.
