Washington (CNN) - Nearly half of all Americans think President Barack Obama does not deserve re-election in 2012, according to a new national poll.
A Quinnipiac University survey released Wednesday indicates that 48 percent of the public thinks Obama doesn't deserve a second term in office, with four in ten saying he does deserve to be re-elected. By a 52 to 34 percent margin, Independent voters say the president doesn't deserve re-election.
Thirty-six percent of people questioned in the poll say they'd vote for Obama if the next presidential election were held today, with 39 percent saying they'd cast their ballot for the Republican candidate. Thirteen percent say their vote depends on which Republican would be facing off against Obama and 12 percent say they are undecided. By a 37 to 27 percent advantage, Independents say they'd vote for the Republican candidate.
"In politics, a month is a lifetime and we have 28 months until November of 2012. But politicians with re-elect numbers at 40 percent bear watching," says Quinnipiac University Polling Institute assistant director Peter Brown.
The Quinnipiac University poll was conducted July 13-19, with 2,181 registered voters nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 2.1 percentage points.
A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll conducted in late March indicated that Americans were divided whether they'd vote for Obama or an unnamed GOP contender.
Surveys taken more than two years out are not always a great indicator of what will happen down the road.
"Keep in mind that only 38 percent thought that Bill Clinton deserved re-election in 1994, but he went on to win a second term," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "And just a year before the 1992 election, 57 percent thought that the elder George Bush deserved to be re-elected, but he lost his bid for another four years in the White House."

Well, I guess Americans are smarter than the media and Obama gave them credit for being.
He hasn't even been in office for a half-term and already pollsters think they can cast judgement?
I've been less than impressed too. But, are these the same Americans that let Bush run the country for 8 years? If so, should they be making any decissions on their own?
It is encouraging to see that Americans are shedding their race bias and beginning to judge Mr Obama on his merits only - and on that scorecard, Obama is one and done – 4 and the door for a failed experiement
Polls....always nice to see a new one!
According to this one the 39% of Independents that would cast their ballot for a Rethuglikkklan TODAY, must be living under a rock. As a matter of fact, A ROCK has done MORE for this country in the past 18 months that ANY ReyhugliKKKlan has.
Yawn!.....
Unfortunately, an overwhemingly large proportion of Americans don't understand the issues facing our nation. Most are less informed than Sarah Palin, which is not.
He deserves to be re-elected in 2012 "Period". President Obama has done so much to improve this nations situation in the long run and it is puzzles me to see him not get the credit he deserves. Who are the pollsters and who is being polled? I would "concider the source".
Doh! Bedtime for Bozo.
Did you ever think you'd see a day when Americans would pine for the "economic prowess" and "job creating skills" of even Jimmy Carter???
Even big-spender George Du(m)bya looks brilliant in retrospect.
Let's send this piker back to his high pressure job of community agitating, I mean "organizing."
Freakin Urkel-in-Chief. "Wreck the economy... oh, did I do that???"
Are you kidding me? Which republican could have accomplished everything this man has, given the mess he inherited and republicans refusing to do their jobs?? I guess women don't need equal pay rights; wall street doesn't need reform; the unemployed don't need to collect on their unemployment insurance; children don't need healthcare; BP doesn't need to pay for ITS oil spill in the gulf, credit card companies don't need to stop robbing people, and the economy was doing JUST FINE without him!! Come on America. It must be the white half of him failing because as far as I can see, the brother is doing a hell of a job considering the crappy situation/environment he has to deal with. And, you want to elect republicans? HAHA. Try giving him a fillibuster proof majority in Nov. "Blue Dogs" need not apply!
Polls can be made to show anything. I believe Obama deserves a second term so I guess I'm a minority now. I don't care because I believe Obama is a much better alternative than any republican. I believe this because it was Republican policies that got us into the mess we are now in and even though not all Republicans are repulsive, they are mostly a party who caters to the very rich businessmen and ignores or exploits the middle class, the working poor and the poor.
OBAMA IN 2014!!!!!!
Hunh. Nobody asked me... or any or MY friends. We're all still 100% behind this brilliant, honest, hard working man who has every American's best interests at heart!
that many? After the fine print from the healthcare bill, along with the financial reform bill continues to get out...it will drop to the 2 out of 10....
financial reform – loaded with pork funding college for women and especially minorities...yeah,, so some banks on wall st screwed up, and now we have to pay for all the Jamaals and Lamars to get a college degree....way to go libs, that's financial reform alright!
This stupid indepedent voters are going to ruin this country.
Are they not happy yet for giving us last 8 eight years of bush.
Hold on, It will get lower!
Come on America. Obama is naive and the worst president ever. My family was vote for him, but not this time.
Let's see what happens when we get a little closer to election time. Most of the polls floating around right now do not include african americans or latino's. All we can do is wait and see.
watch before long ,his handlers will try to paint a picture of a president that has reinvented himself and now gets it. !!!!
Just who are these people polling ??????
Well, Halleluiah – kook-aid drinkers FINALLY woke up. Bless your little hearts – guess that "hope and change" didn't work out so well for ya, did it?????
How can 40% of the people in this country possibly be SO STUPID as to re-elect this buffoon??!! It only proves that the education system in this country is a disaster. Anybody with a rudimentary knowledge of math, finance and history knows dumping Obozo in 2012 is our ONLY chance at survival.
Obama's poll numbers will improve when the GOP presidential candidate is from the current crop of front runners. The GOP will lose again because it does not or cannot have a candidate who can attract moderates and independents. There is no moderate wing of the GOP.
Why I "never" get a call, because President Obama will get my vote?
MY candidate for President would do the following
1 Cut out the deficit spending; veto pork spending
2 get us out of Afghanistan within 12 months of his taking office
3 Tell the truth to the American people even if it means not getting a second term
4 Be a leader and work both sides of the aisle and govern through compromise
5 Fix social security
6 Get out of Iraq
7 Stop supporting Israel and sending them any arms or aid so long as they continue building settlements
Most legislative accomplishments in 2 years than any other POTUS. He'll get re-elected.
I think this poll was conducted in a GOP district. LMAO!!!!
