White House says review needed of Sherrod firing

(CNN) - A White House official tells CNN a "longer look" now needs to be taken at the circumstances surrounding the firing of USDA official Shirley Sherrod.

"We're not sure what the ultimate result will be, but it's clear that with new information through the full speech, a longer look needed to be taken," the official told CNN's Suzanne Malveaux. "The White House contacted the department last night about the case and agreed, based on new evidence, that it should be reviewed."

A White House official told CNN Tuesday night that President Obama had been fully briefed after Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack's original decision and fully supported that decision. Vilsack says he's now willing to conduct a thorough review and consider additional facts.

It's about time. It took them 24 hours too long. As a life long Democrat and strong supporter of President Obama, the first thing the President should do is fire Vilsack for poor leadership and making a decision without knowing all the facts.

Everyone was overzealous and over-reacted to this BEFORE the facts were in, without allowing her any comments for her defense. I am very disappointed in all parties involved. This is NOT a feather in the cap of the NAACP, the White House, or the Secretary of Agriculture.

I am really stunned the White House is looking at this situation again and reconsidering it, does Barak Obama ever stick with a decision or does he flip flop all the time based on what the public bullies think? Just because the NAACP changed their stance does Barak Obama have to as well? The fact is that maybe this woman should not have been fired but given the situation do you really think she should be in a postion to decided help is given to farmers? I don't think so. She is not exactly devoid of mess here, she did say she refused help or didn't help as much so in my opinion she does not deserve her job back. Furthermore the NAACP loudmouth Ben Jealous started this, when will they deal with their own milignancy in thier movement. Such as Louis Farakhan, Black Panthers, lets not all acted shocked that their is some racism within the African American institutions because there is plenty of it.

She's been wronged, and I'll bet before it's over she comes out of it with more than half of FAUX Noise's money.

The lies, hate, fear, has got to stop.

Just when Karl Rove is revving up to induce people to vote for the most hateful and vile of the group who will run for office to be in charge of our country.

The video proves exactly what it was intended to do, that NAACP members are racist. Shirley Sherrod story about mistreating the white man was met with glee and enthusiasm by audience members and yes they looked like racist to me. Surely we all get the point she was trying to a have a teaching moment with the NAACP, the media is missing the entire point, it’s not about Shirley.

Even if portions of her remarks reversing her statement were edited out, and they should not have been, what on earth would lead her to think that her initial remarks were appropriate? Based just on those racist comments, I question her ability to use good judgement in general.

What a mess. Look at fox news bowinig their heads trying to act as if they have nothing to do with this. I saw last night on O'rielly show Bill saying all of the people they made President Obama get rid of. Now this morning they are trying to act as if this didn't all happen because a friend of theirs gave them this tape to play. And proudly stated no other net work was running it until they pointed it out.

Sooner or later fox news is going to get what they deserve. Hate, hate, negative, negative non supportive so called news reporting.

It isn't a huge surprise because only part of the tape was aired. If you see everything, then you get a better idea of the whole picture. Showing only 30 seconds to a minute doesn't give you the whole story and can leave you with incomplete understanding. This is the same thing with quoting one line of the Bible or other holy book. It can be taken out of context.

  12. Sense of fairness

There is no question that the Secretary of Agriculture made a mistake. However, it is funny how the media is now focused on the White House rush to judgment. The other culprits in this mess are receiving a free pass. Where is the outrage against the conservative blogger who provided the distorted facts? Where is the outrage against Fox News who ran the story (if they ran it with knowledge of the full context of the speech their behavior is even more egregious)? Where is the outrage against the cable and mainstream media who ran with the story without checking all the facts? Will Bill O’Reilly rant and rave about the injustice done to this woman? The White House is not the only entity to be criticized. We, the people of the United States, must stand it and hold the media including bloggers to a higher standard of behavior. Whether you are a Democrat, Republican or a Tea Party member, it is incumbent on us to research ALL the facts before making judgment. We cannot simply rely on snippets provided by bias news media (Fox = Republican and NBC= Democrat). Let’s hold everybody accountable in this debacle!

  13. Randolph Carter, I'm no expert, but...

Climategate. ACORN. Sherrod. You guys realize that the crazy right will take things out of context and even outright lie in their desperation to get power back. Don't you remember the presentation that was left behind at a hotel on Boca Grande, stating that the republican strategy was to play on the fear and vanity of their constituents? I blame the media for not calling these knuckleheads (on the left and right) on their shennanigans. You guys really need to start doing your jobs. I'm not holding my breath, though. You've got bills to pay just like the rest of us. No wonder the average "real American" is misinformed and as dumb as a box of rocks. At least Oxendine got his butt kicked in the Georgia primary last night. After enduring his obnoxious commercials for months, that felt really good. Haha. Have a nice day!

How low can Fox News and Andrew Breitbart sink. Editing this tape of Shirley Sherrod might seam to be as low as they could go, but knowing how rotten Fox News is, I'm sure it just be a matter of time before they go lower. they sea to create their own facts.

  15. No Incumbents 2010

Obama is a traitor for doing the work of right-wing fringe groups. There was no reason for the Obama and the NAACP to lynch Sherrod other than the fact that the NAACP is a reactionary sham organization with no purpose. Now that Sherrod has been vindicated, where does she go to get her reputation back? Obama and Vilshack should both resign to accept responsibility for the egregious injustice they committed.

  16. Solutions and not Rhetoric

I believe this woman should sue this conservative race bating blogger and Fox. They purposely wanted to incite negative feelings towards blacks. This is awful. This just proves the point that there are SOME conservatives that just can't get past race. America kick these scum bags out who hold political offices as well those in the mainstream out of the conversation. I am so tired of this race crap. Whatever color you are you should be treated with respect and dignity. People should be judged by the content of their character and not the COLOR of their skin!

Breitbart and Fox News should be panned, ridiculted and ostracized. They ARE the racists and beyond that, they are liars. What Sherrod said in the tape to the NAACP was that she wanted to do little to help the white farmer but learned that it wasn't about race as much as was about poverty and all these farmers needed help. Breitbart is a fat liar who justifies his posting (and splicing of the tape) to show the NAACP houses racists too but the tape DIDN'T show any racism, instead showed redemption and growth. So Breitbart's NAACP racism is in his head. What he and his sponsor, Fox News can't stand, is that they and TEA Party have RACISTS in their midst and they use race to beat up honorable people. The country knows it. All sponsors of these RACISTS beware: we the consumer will boycott your products if you continue to support these cancer cells.

Of course it's OK when Liberals use the race card! Reconsidering the Sherrod case is an attrocity in and of itself. Typical!

how this played out was a bitter sweet look at it this way if she didn't resign this would have not been an issue and the tea party would
have said that she got special treatment but the fact that this didn't happen and the truth came out tells the real story on how racist the
republicans and the tea party are the fact that the NAACP moved
quickly based on the facts that were present at the time but made the
mistake in not viewing the whole story tells me that they don't except
racism no matter who you are so again the tea party like republican
party like to distort the truth to try to keep voters on there side

Beck did not even run the story and once he did get on the story they were on the side of Shirley Sherrod. This administration is a joke on so many levels.

If she doesn't sue FAUX, maybe she can sue the Government for wrongfully firing her, and let the taxpayers pick up the bill.

Whichever way she goes, I'm behind her 100%. What's happening in this country regarding race is beyond embarassing.

AND I'M WHITE. It's just a shame to treat humans the way she was treated. If it doesn't stop, will YOU be next??? Will that gun the repubs are carrying kill you or a member of YOUR famly??
