Ben Nelson goes against his party–again

Ben Nelson bucked his own party again this week, voting against a bill to extend unemployment benefits.

Washington (CNN) - Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson is not afraid to buck his party when it comes to fiscal issues.

The Nebraskan did it again this week, voting against a bill extending unemployment insurance benefits to millions of Americans. The bill passed Wednesday with the help of a couple of Repubican votes. It now goes to the House where it is expected to pass.

The extension, which lapsed in June, failed in an earlier Senate vote after a Republican filibuster.

In this week's votes, Nelson insisted that Democrats find a way to pay for the extension of benefits. He said there are some stimulus funds that could be used - an idea that Republicans back.

"I'm comfortable with my own decision on this," he said. "I made it clear what I think needs to be done." Nelson told CNN.

Hopefully some one other than REID will remove this turkey from any committee and hopefully he will switch to the Party of NO'S and weirdos that live in the [DC house of who knows what].even if it costs the majority ,we can not use it as is. I do not know what has happened to the MEN in the MID WEST, they once were a solid group of politicians that cared for the people. Now they seem to be the Larry Craig types who do not know the difference between honor and integrity over Fluff.

There is unspent stimulus money that could have been used for paying for unemployment extension. The dems didn't want to spend that money. They figured they could pass the bill anyway without paying for it so what's a few billion more.!!!

To commentor #3 – And most "honorable Americans" don't want to be saddled by 3.5 Trillion in debt if the GOP makes the Bush hand-outs to the wealthy permanent.

To commentor #5 – There was no "kickback" you idiot knuckle-dragging shit4brains.

The only reason this traitor calls himself a Democrat is that he doesn't have the guts to hang the stinking rethuglikkklan't label around his neck. it it walks like a rethug and talks like a rethug and VOTES like a rethug, it's a rethug no matter what it calls itself. time for him and all the DINOs to GO EXTINCT.

"Ohhhh... So Nooooow you wanna pay for bills before passing them?"

Nope – Nelson just wants congress to follow the PAYGO agreement that congress, predominately democrats, lobbied for.

"This idiot is not a Democrat, you can look at it's face, it's all racist
The republican racists believe that unemployment Benefits are for blacks and Latinos that is the reason why they didn't vote for them"

This is so sad. While I did not vote for Obama, I thought that a LONG overdue reconciliation between races would begin to occur upon his election. Look at us – things have not been worse between races since the Civil Rights Act – and I dare say BOTH sides, with a complicit media, just keep fanning the flames. Dr. King, God rest his soul, must be rolling over in his grave.

I really wish that I could understand the all of a sudden concern about the country going bank rupt. Where was all of this concern when Bush was in office for 8 years and spent on those unnecessary wars. If we will just take the time and think, what exactly did Bush do the 8 years that he was in office. Let's see,no child left behind.well believe many were and are left behind. What exactly did he do for the middle and lower class? But now the Republicans are always talking about there children and their children's children. WT???????
To not extend unemployment is about as unamerican and non caring as you can get.

I live in Georgia which is in the top 5 of unemployed states. We have a republican governor who is not trying to do anything to help his state.
Everyone is not on welfare and looking for a handout. But for those who have paid their taxes, they should be able to depend on the government to help them out when situations which were no fault of there own made them unemployed. Believe me when I say that we do want to work . How much do the Republicans actually think unemployment pays?? Are you kidding me.

No one wants to withhold assistance from the unemployed. However, many honorable Americans want to PAY FOR the bill before it is signed into law. What's wrong with that?

now we see who stands with whom. this clown is no democrat. he might as well call himself a republican because thats how he votes most of the time. how can a person from a state that has a population of 1.8 million stop a public option for the whole country? i don't understand this guy and i hope the people of nebraska throws him out. it wouldn't matter if they get a republican in his seat, it already is now. shame on him, he has sided with big corporations against the american people at every turn.

While I may or may not agree with his decisions, I applaud his willingness to think for himself. That's all too uncommon in politics today.

Nelson had no qualms in 2001 giving away $1.3 trillion in tax cuts to the wealthy and more in 2003 (and if those cuts were so great then why was the economy collapsing by 2008 Ben?), but now he won't approve $33 billion for the unemployed. He's always been a boot lickin' suckup to corporate, ,agribusiness, insurance and financial interests, enabling them on to the next financial disater or e-coli outbreak. Shows one where his real 'values' are

This wind bag is not a Democrat.

When will the good people of Nebraska realize this clown does not act in their interests?

WE need real Democrats. Democrats who are for the people and not the fat cats.

Get rid of the likes of Nelson.

When's Nelson up for re-election? I think I might move back to Nebraska just to have the pleasure of voting against him! We can pay for it by ending a couple of wars and also ending the tax cuts to the wealthy . . . how 'bout we do that??? Of course the GObP and the GObP wanna-be's like Nelson don't want to do THAT!

Ms Parker, did you want to "PAY FOR" Bush's tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans or Bush's war of choice in Iraq too?? I'm guessing not.
