Washington (CNN) – Social networking giant Facebook said Thursday that it is investigating the deletion of a post by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin that sounded off about plans for a mosque near Ground Zero in New York City.
Facebook is looking into "this incident to determine why and how the content in question was removed," spokesman Andrew Noyes said in a statement provided to CNN.
Later: Facebook sorry for Palin post snafu
Palin re-posted the Facebook "note" Thursday morning. In the re-posted version, Palin responds to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg who was, in turn, responding to earlier comments by Palin about the planned mosque.
"No one is disputing that America stands for – and should stand for – religious tolerance. It is a foundation of our republic," Palin writes in the re-posted version of her Facebook note.
"This is not an issue of religious tolerance but of common moral sense. To build a mosque at Ground Zero is a stab in the heart of the families of the innocent victims of those horrific attacks."
Palin added, "Many Americans, myself included, feel it would be an intolerable and tragic mistake to allow such a project sponsored by such an individual to go forward on such hallowed ground. This is nothing close to 'religious intolerance,' it's just common decency."
The re-posted note ends by informing readers: "The original post of this statement (on July 20, 2010) was somehow unintentionally deleted by mistake or technical glitch."
Facebook allows users to report violations of the site's terms of service, including content which users believe is racist or hate speech.
Although Facebook has yet to complete its investigation of the original post's deletion, Noyes said that the site strives to balance being a platform for dialogue and a respectful environment.
"We want Facebook to be a place where people can openly discuss issues and express their views while respecting the rights and feelings of others," Noyes said in another statement to CNN. "The goal of our policies is to strike a very delicate balance between giving people the freedom to express their opinions and viewpoints – even those that may be controversial to some – and maintaining a safe and trusted environment."
"We believe in tolerance, unless you're brown, then we hate you"
Wonder where she bought that pointy white hat?
Oh please, get over yourself. You mama grizzlies sound like you're rabid.
This is like saying that we cannot have Christian churches anywhere.. Because the KKK. Why are people so stupid?
Radical Islam is to Islam as KKK is to Christianity.
Let them build the Mosque. Muslims had no more to do with 9/11 then Christians had to do with lynchings of black people.
"What's this little button thingy do?"
"OOPS! Now I have to type this all over again. Maybe I can blame a hopey-changey person on messing with all of my hard work."
Seriously, she has every right to post what she wants and it was wrong for anyone to try to take it down (if that was the case), so long as it didn't violate Facebook's policies.
But that still doesn't mean that she doesn't come across as being dumb as dirt.
I do not follow why a handful of people of a given religion cause a negative attack by people like Part Time Palin. I saw on TV the other day a group of people in a Texas town fighting with everything they have to stop a mosque from beiong built. Gee isn't that how the country was started, escape from opression of their religious beliefs.
I am Catholic but certianly don't want to be labeled a terrorist because the IRA exists. It is sad to me that the people in this country who are all about America, moral values, whatever, are the most Un-Christian of all.
People's personal feelings about Palin aside, I wouldn't put this past Facebook. In fact, I've been hearing a lot recently about not only Facebook, but Google and Youtube (also owned by Google) taking down posts they don't agree with as well. We are entering dangerous 1st amendment territory here regarding who exactly gets to approve what. These 3 companies really need to be indepedently investigated over these allegations.
I never thought I would agree with Sarah but on ground zero I do. This piece of ground should be a National Memorial, then no group or business could build on it other than a monument.
Fools names and fools faces are often found in public places. Americans are wasting valuable and productive time with nonsense like facebook. Some employers are advising workers that their pay is for productivity, not fun and games in the workplace. Employers are using facebook to track the time of posts, the time of access to post, and other online activity, which is all legal, if the postings are taking place during work hours.
Is David Kernell locked up yet?
Anybody know what he was doing at the time of the deletion?
ATTENTION: That is want Palin wants.........sick of hearing about her
I don't agree with what the woman said, but I will defend her right to say it.
Does anyone care about anything that Palin says or think. This is the people of new York decision and not hers. She left Alaska where she had a chance to make decisions. She decided that that job was not glamorous enough, so she quit. Please, get this moran out of the news.
Typical neo-liberal attitude: Agree with me or I'll prevent you from exercising your right to free speech.
Is it possible she deleted it herself so that here words could not be refudiated?
$ister $arah never cared about the lower 48 until McCain had his brain puff and picked her out of obscurity. As an East Coaster, she does not speak for me or my family who live in NYC. She is entitled to her own opinion, but not her own facts. The fact is, this is an addition to an existing building that is for ALL public use and it is NOT on the WTC property.
NYC is a culturally diverse treasure. We don't need any divisive bigotry sent our way, thankyouverymuch. Here's an offer to Mrs Half Term Gov Palin: How about if you stay away from the lower 48 and we'll stay away from Alaska. Deal?
Is she serious. Does she think that American Muslims did not feel the tragedy and heartache that was 9/11 just as much as American Christians! Her intolerance for anything other than what she believes is incredible.
So much for religious freedom. And TEa baggers say Obama is taking away their rights!
Who does she think she is? What gives her the right to speak for our "common moral sense"? What business is it of hers what NYC does?
"But soft, what sh**te through younder bimbo breaks?"-Shakespalin
Maybe they found out that she didn't have anything to say
Dear, dear, Sarah,
The religion of Is;am is not out enemy. There were members of that faith killed on 9-11. They are also mourning losses. If you TRULY believe in the American way of life, you would get a job, stay home with your family, and go to YOUR church to worship the same God we honor
when we salute the AMERICAN flag!!
Should have proof-read....the religion of Islam is not OUR enemy///
I love it. When there is a computer error and facebook deletes something of mine(happened before) then I am out of luck. Just gotta deal with it.
Same thing happens to Sarah Palin and she gets an investigation into the matter. What a bunch of crap. She isn't part of "real America" folks. She is part of the America that gets special treatment because she is rich and famous. And all you tea party types just whitewash that and pretend you could run into her at a local small town good old event. Get a clue.
She is not news worthy period.......
America stands for freedom, property owners can't be told not to build a community center on property they legally own because of religious prejudice. I think it is insensitive to build a mosque so close to ground zero as well. But let's stop pretending that this building is a mosque. It will be a cultural community center that will have a place for muslims to worship. That is their right and rights are what this country is built on. Gingrich saying we should not allow mosques' to be built here until churches are built in Saudi Arabia is ridiculous. People of diverse religions do not want to move to Saudi Arabia because they do not espouse the same freedom of religion we do here. So what's next, no Japanese businesses or cultural centers in Pearl Harbor? Freedom isn't free, we had to fight countries in our history to preserve our freedoms, but we didn't fight against their philosophies just to turn around and practice them afterwards. Dangerous muslim groups are allowed to espouse their hatred on the streets of New York because it is their right. Give good muslims' that want to build a community center that will set a good example the same rights. P.S. I am a white christian.
What happened to freedom of speech in this country?
