Rangel to face House Ethics Committee hearing

The House Ethics Committee will hold a formal hearing later this month on alleged violations by Rep. Charles Rangel.
The House Ethics Committee will hold a formal hearing later this month on alleged violations by Rep. Charles Rangel.

(CNN) - The House Ethics Committee will hold a formal hearing on alleged violations by Rep. Charles Rangel, the New York Democrat forced to step aside as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee earlier this year over ethics questions, a senior Democratic source told CNN on Thursday.

The panel has been looking at several alleged ethical violations involving Rangel. A formal hearing will be a trial-like session involving
formal charges with lawyers for the House acting as prosecutors and Rangel's lawyers defending him.

There was no immediate information available on the exact charges Rangel faces, or when the formal hearing will begin.

In comments to reporters, Rangel said he welcomed the news and wanted to testify in his defense.

"It gives me an opportunity to respond to my friends and constituents who have supported me for 40 years," Rangel said. "All I've been able to give them is 'trust me.' "

Now, he said, the facts will come out.

Rangel temporarily stepped down as Ways and Means chairman following the announcement of an ethics investigation of several allegations, including failure to pay taxes on a home in the Dominican Republic

The congressman has also admitted a failure to report several hundred thousand dollars in assets on federal disclosure forms.

In addition, he is under scrutiny for the purported misuse of a rent-controlled apartment for political purposes, as well as for allegedly
preserving tax benefits for an oil-drilling company in exchange for donations to a project he supported at the City College of New York.

The House ethics committee previously admonished Rangel for violating rules on receiving gifts. Specifically, the committee found that Rangel violated House gift rules by accepting reimbursement payments for travel to conferences in the Caribbean in 2007 and 2008.

Rangel, who has served 20 consecutive terms in the House, has several challengers in the Democratic primary for the November mid-term congressional election.

sad how long this has taken. if this were anyone else they would already have faced justice. this story and that of celebrities like lohan just goes to show that there really are two systems of justice in this country; one for rich, influencial, or powerful people, and the other for the rest of us who live ordinary lives. if justice were trully blind everyone would be subject to the same standards and not use their money or power to evade the law. the real question is this, if found guilty, which i suspect is a really big IF, does rangle go loose his job and go to jail, or does he get a slap on the wrist and allowed to continue on?

Funny how 300+ comment negatively about Sarah Palin and her being 'hosed' by Facebook (not one person that I saw asked the question: What are the parameters that got her post removed and why is it automated (i.e., why are they lying?)) and only one 'split' comment on Charlie (I never met a tax dodge I didn't like ) Rangel?

    Interesting.

Charles Rangel epitomizes the "crooked politician" stereotype. I think the action that most bothered me was that he was using rent control, which is meant for the poor, to avoid having to pay market rent – which he could definitely afford!

This is how the rich get richer and the poor get shafted! It should never have taken Congress this long to investigate him! Of course, since a lot of them probably admire his ability to make money off his position, they probably didn't want to seem like hypocrites! Oh Wait!
That's what most of them are!

  8. False conspiracy fears are GOP Taliban tactics

    Vitter, Ensign, Craig and Foley,
    Republicans are much more holy.

As for wrong doing, the right wing nuts are quick to forget the republican culture of corruption, including DeLay, Armey, Barton, King and more.

This is a joke – this so-called "investigation" has taken too long and cost too much of the taxpayer's money (my money). It's about time they throw the tax-cheating bum out on his arse.

They will do nothing to this loser. He and Senator Chris Dodd should be removed from the senate for their actions in the housing crisis. Oh wait they were just herald as heros for their new bill. Our congress is a joke when we praise elected people for screwing things up. Imagine that...it happened under Bush–never mind.

Man, what a bunch of clowns these democrats are. They are either dumber than a box of rocks or corrupt as can be. Hank Johnson thinks that the entire island of Guam could tip over. Sheila Jackson Lee thinks that there is still a North and a South Vietnam and Charlie Rangel is the biggest crook since Hillary Clinton. Drain the swamp, Nancy.

We think that Congressman Rangel (Bronze Star holder) should get in front of the press cameras, grasp his hankerchief in his hand, and tearfully admit guilt, then promise to do better in the future, and put the matter, or charges, behind him...works for a whole bunch of repubno's....why not for Charlie!!
