Sherrod on Breitbart: 'I'd tell him he's a liar'

Washington (CNN) – The woman caught in the middle of a national firestorm said Thursday that, if given the chance, she would tell conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart that he is a liar.

Breitbart, who first posted an edited version of a speech that led to Shirley Sherrod's resignation, said Tuesday on CNN's John King, USA that he had not specifically targeted Sherrod, and had not asked for her to be fired.

But when asked by CNN Chief National Correspondent John King what she would say to Breitbart, Sherrod did not dance around the question.

"I'd tell him he's a liar. He knew exactly what effect that would have on not only - he knew what effect that would have on the conservative, racist people he's dealing with. That's why I started getting the hate mail. And that's why I started getting the hate calls. He got the effect he was looking for," Sherrod said on John King, USA.

And is Sherrod willing to forgive Breitbart?

"[H]e would really need to come and sit down with me and look me in the eye so that we could see if we can find a place," Sherrod said. "I'm not saying I won't forgive him, but we would need to see if we can find a place where that can happen."

In the video first posted by Breitbart, Sherrod can be heard telling an audience at a March 27, 2010, appearance before a local chapter of the NAACP that she had not given a white farmer "the full force of what I could do" to help him save the family farm.

A longer version of the video, discovered after Sherrod was asked to resign from her job at the USDA, revealed that Sherrod's words had been taken out of context.

Breitbart did post corrections Wednesday on blog entries that led to Sherrod’s forced resignation.

"Correction: While Ms. Sherrod did discuss withholding help from a white farmer, it was not during her tenure with the USDA," said a notice posted on one of two blog postings on Breitbart's biggovernment.com website.

A notice on another posting of the Sherrod video footage said: "Correction: While Ms. Sherrod made the remarks captured in the first video featured in this post while she held a federally appointed position, the story she tells refers to actions she took before she held that federal position."

Breitbart did not mention the edited nature of the video he posted or the full context.

Both of the corrected postings were from Monday.

Again This Story Screams Of A Lawsuit Against Andrew Breitbart For Slander, FOX News Channel For Defamation Of Character, And The White House For Wrongful Termination. This Case Would Be A Slam Dunk Victory!

She is exactly right. Listen folks, you cannot take things out of context like both dems and reps are doing. It is not honest. An apology from Hannity amounts to nothing. It is not sincere, because he will do the same thing again tomorrow. I really respect this lady because of the honesty she brings to the table.

Who is SHE to call anybody racist? This is ridiculous.
Maybe if the left would quit flinging the race card around everyone could stop being completely irrational.
conservatives aren't racist. They believe in the constitution. they believe that people should WORK for what they get, not STEAL it from others.
    Shirley can stick it.
    So Can Obama.
So can all the liberals who think we are going to sit idly by while they trash this country. November comes quickly, THANK GOD.

Looks like Sherrod is angry at the wrong people here.

Breitbart puts something up on his website so what is the big deal here? Breitbart also had the portion of the video on his website where she finishes her thought and doesn't come off so bad but still.

Then the Obama administrations head of the department of agriculture on orders from the administration fires Sherrod without checking further into the matter. Seems more like incompetence is the thing to be annoyed with.

This seems to go on every day from both sides of the political isle but how in the world do we not shake our heads at how the Obama administration mucked this up?

Time for everyone including Ms. Sherrod to calm down a bit. Look to your own before you blame the other!

As a Independent Conservative, you and your kind are the reason that I am no longer a Republican or with have anything to do with the Tea Partiers.

Sherrod should file a civil (defamation) suit against Andrew Breitbart. This is not about race, it is about twisting the facts with an intent to cause people to belittle and misjudge her.

Unbelievable! How can these yahoos, Breitbart and the such (Limbaugh etc) not feel an ounce of remorse for what was done? It is sad and unfortunate that a pulpit has been given to these people who misinform.

Andrew Breitbart and people like him who miss-represent the truth about people and legislation to feed their followers need to be held accountable for their actions. They are a venomous cancer that threatens our very existence.

Breitbart lied. It was a lie of omission. He distorted the truth by taking her words out of context. He may have INTENDED to discredit Ms. Sherrod, BUT HE ONLY DISCREDITED HIMSELF!
I admire Ms. Sherrod, and I regret that this happened to her. I am WHITE and it makes me more angry to think that others may associate me with his evil actions. Yes, evil.
Ms. Sherrod's actions are admirable. Mr. Breitbard's are evil.
We cannot have authentic debate in this country about issues if people like Breitbart behave in this despicable manner.
Ms. Sherrod, I am so sorry that you have suffered through this, but in the end, you will be admired and appreciated by all right-thinking people.

Breitbart is shameless but the firing was actually worse. To fire anyone without an investigation was inexcusable to say nothing about the 25 year interim. Geez! Shirley Sherrod should get apologies from everyone in town.

I think the Sherrod is open to a slander suit. Then we will see this pathetic result of affirmative action fold like a cheap tent.

In the immediate aftermath of her forced resignation, Ms. Sherrod played very well on television when telling the "true" story and describing her invaluable contributions tp the cause of racial equality. However, with each passing day that she continues to give interviews – ratherm that she is eemingly "on call" to gove interviews – her message becomes more programmed and stale. Ms. Sherrod, either take the promotion or not – but the time to get out of the limelight was YESTERDAY!

Perhaps she should not continue using the words 'conservative' and 'racist' in the same sentence. I'm sick of it.

  20. No kidding

Conservative blogs, and of course the big FOX, practice video editing 100% of the time. I lost count of the Obama videos that cut off in mid sentence, to make him look like some kind of loon.

Breitbart should apologize and so should Fixed Channel, but you know they won't. Their logo, "fair and balanced" should be taken away from them. They certainly are not fair & balanced. Their agenda is strictly to discredit the Dems and liberals and they are not a news channel in any way. That Fixed Channel has high ratings is mystifying and sad, because it means that their loyal whacko-right wing viewers are not getting the full story on anything except when it suits Fixed Channel. Too bad. As I have once before, try watching a different channel for once, try Rachel Maddow. She's smart & goes deeper into stories other channels won't even bring up. Even Keith Olbermann yesterday did an entire hour on Shirley Sherrod, and you could sense the anger in his voice at the injustice that was done on this dear lady. I hope she sues Breitbart, and I hope bloggers go on his web-site and on Faux Channel web-site & complain about the damage they purpose sought to create, and I hope Mrs. Sherrod ends up getting a far better job than she had before.

Mrs. Sherrod, May " FATHER GOD" continue to guide you as HE strengthen you with HIS Grace, Faithfulness, & Forgiveness. The courage the " LORD " has placed upon your heart like Joshua & Caleb, Esther & Ruth to face these so call giants. These same group who accused you & now their are your footstool. A faithful witness does not lie, But a false witness will utter lies. Prov.14: 5 . She opens her mouth with wisdom, And on her tongue is the law of kindness. Prov.31: 26. In HIS Awesome Grace!!!

Why does his "correction" say nothing of:

    1) The fact that her father was murdered by a white farmer

    2) The fact that she eventually helped the white farmer and saved his farm, and that that very farmer has come to her defense

    3) The fact that she was using the story as an illustration of her own misplaced racist feelings and how she learned to change.

The fact that Breitbart edited all of that out of the video, tried to use the edited video to stoke racist feelings, lied about not targeting Sherrod, and is giving such a half-hearted correction leads one to believe it very likely that he is in fact the racist in this story.

  25. Sharrod's rant

At first I was thought that Sherrod was great. She was a class act that handled a very misfortunate situation very well. Then she ranted on looney Media Matters (spooky leftist blog). There she then showed that she is not above racism. I lost 63% of the respect that I had for her.

Note: The NAACP had/has all of the film. They were the only ones that had all of the film and could have reviewed it before they and the president's staff made the huge ooops.
