Candidate accused of being a 'birther' walks back statement

Kansas congressional candidate Tracey Mann says he is not a ‘birther.’

Kansas congressional candidate Tracey Mann says he is not a ‘birther.’

(CNN) - Two days after a Kansas newspaper revoked its endorsement of a Republican congressional candidate because it came to believe he is a so-called "birther," the campaign is telling the paper the candidate is no such thing.

Twice in the span of 30 days, Republican Tracey Mann has called on President Obama to come forward with proof of his American citizenship. But now his campaign tells the Hutchison News the candidate "misspoke" and has long believed the president has proved his citizenship.

The pushback from Mann's campaign comes after the paper, emphatically withdrew its endorsement of him.

"The reason [for withdrawing the endorsement] is that it turns out Mann is what is known as a birther," the newspaper's editorial board wrote Wednesday night. "He questions the citizenship of President Barack Obama despite evidence that is irrefutable to most objective, rational people – including a birth certificate released by the Hawaii secretary of state and birth announcements printed in Honolulu's two major newspapers."

The newspaper based its judgment on Mann's most recent comments Tuesday, made after the endorsement was published, that he did not believe President Obama's American citizenship was a proven fact.

"I think the president of the United States needs to come forth with his papers and show everyone that he's an American citizen and put this issue to bed once and for all," Mann said on KSAL's "Friendly Fire" radio show. He made similar comments during a candidate forum in June.

On Thursday, Mann's campaign manager, Jake DeVantier, told the Hutchinson News that Mann "misspoke" on the radio show and that he "has seen sufficient evidence to prove Obama is a citizen."

"He believed Obama was a citizen when he said that on the air," DeVantier added.

According to the newspaper, Mann is a frontrunner in the race for Kansas' first congressional district.

DeVantier, nor anyone from the Mann campaign, responded to CNN's calls or e-mail for comment.

Love it! Tea Baggers are all over the map. As soon as one of them starts to smell success, they back pedal all over the place to cover their lies. Misspoke my A$$. You're a whacked out birther, Mann.

Every American at some point in their life will be required for a variety of reasons(passport for a trip, applications and etc.) to produce a "long form" birth certificate that has mother and father information, name and signature of ATTENDING PHYSICIAN, and etc.

President Obama absolutely refuses to produce one and anyone who asks for the obvious is labeled with that ridiculous "birther" label.

Any reasonable person knows in their heart that it would be so easy to clear this up by producing the long form but all they have produced is a short form with no information about the attending physician.

With all of the research that is done on a U.S. President, you're telling us that no one can find the name(whether now living or dead) of the doctor who delivered a U.S. President?

And these are the kinds of people that might be our senators?

CNN reported that Obama's poll numbers are dropping...is it because people prefer these kinds of losers in office rather than a President who is fighting his darndest for average Americans?

The man just fought the Republicans on behalf of the unemployed so that they could continue to get benefits and won a victory for the unemployed..

He is fighting them to get help to small businesses – they are opposing it because they want the economy to fail so that Obama could fail...

The first thing that he did when he got into office was to sign into law coverage for several million children to get health coverage...

He helped the unemployed pay for their COBRA health insurance...

He fought for health insurance for all, and stopped the insurance industry from discriminating against people who have pre-existing conditions...

He passed Wall Street reforms that prevent them from screwing us over...

He stopped the credit card companies from screwing us over...

and his ratings are falling? Really? Americans really want the Republicans back in office, when they fought AGAINST the American people and have promised to repeal the health insurance bill, take away coverage from the children and families that need it, and they call the unemployed "lazy, drug users..."?

People really prefer the lying Republicans who are running on a platform to get rid of social security and reduce medicare and Medicaid benefits???

What more do these "Right Wing" Republican candidates want from our President. The State of Hawaii has provided a copy of his Birth Certificate and a local Newpaper announcement of his "legitimate birth" in the State of Hawaii! The "Birthers" are in a classification of their own with nothing to be proud of!

"He believed Obama was a citizen...." yet he made repeated statements calling on him to prove it. Talk about lies upon lies. Can we get an honest candidate JUST ONCE?!

This birther thing is the maximum height of stupidity. Don't these people realize that Barak Obama would never have become president if he were not an American citizen? Yet they continue showing their bigotry after two years of the President being in office.
What part of the following don't you people understand? Barak Obama is an American citizen, born in this country's 50th state. He was elected with 54% of the nation's vote. He is this country's first Black President and I along with millions of other Americans are proud as hell of us as a nation for electing him.
You guys & gals really need to get over yourselves and move on.

The Tea Baggers are the worse thing that have happen to the Republican party and the best thing that have happen for the Dems. Did the government close down a major medial institution or something and let out a bunch of loons because that is all it seem the Tea Baggers republicans candidates are these days? These loons need to be let back into the medial institution they were let out of before they totally destroy this country with all their loony narrow hateful talking points.

The decision by the Kansas Newspaper to pull their endorsement of Mr. Mann shows that News Media and Journalistic Integrity still exist in our country. Journalism must always employ the highest degree of logic and reason. It requires great responsibility on the part of the journalism/news community to give the people honest truth. The once distinct line separating a Tabloid and Newspaper, an Entertainment program and News Program has become faded and misshapen.

What is it with these people - and I don't mean the "birthers"? They know full well their words are being recorded for all posterity. How can you "misspeak" on two separate occasions?

Another pandering politician. Don't vote him in. If he's willing to sell out to get elected, he'll sell to the highest bidder - and that won't be his constituents - as soon as he's elected.

It has become "normal" for "Tea Party" candidates to claim that they had "misspoke". However, if one examines their previous statements it becomes clear that they had expressed strongly heal convictions.

It doesn't matter whether we discuss Angle's privatization of Social Security or Rand Paul's desire to repeal the 17th Amendment, it comes back to the same thing: Tea Party candidates cannot stand by their words.

These GOP "birthers" know this is false but still use it for those who are dumb and gullible enough to buy into it, and why is it when people make up lies about others , they always misspoke!
Time to pay the piper , so thanks to the paper for seeing Mann for what he is ....a blowhard who makes speeches to prey on gullibile voters , in other words making things up to make himself look better to the uninformed!

How can anyone be a birther??????????????????

You have to be a total moron to believe that Barack Obama is not a U.S. citizen!

Because then........ George W. Bush, DICK, the CIA, NSA, FBI, Congress, Supreme Court ....... all would have had to agree to allow a NON-citizen to become president!

    Birthers= idiots.

What have we come to? In my lifetime, normally, The Press and Media have long been outright and unreconstructed supporters of the Republican Party and all of it's faults. We now have the RightWingNut Republican Tracey Mann, running for the Kansas U. S. Senate seat, previously endorsed by the Hutchinson KS News, putting forth the "Obama isn't a real U. S. citizen" horse manure. He is then reprimanded by the News, the endorsement withdrawn. Then Mann's "birther" position is denied by the Mann campaign, and Mann is back in the good graces of the News. Blackmail clearly, but what the hey! Have we reached the point where there is a sensible Republican Press/Media, but there are not sensible Republican candidates? Or do the Republicans and their Press/Media smell "Victory" in November, and want not to be seen as psycho? Who then will bring Palin, Bachmann, Limbaugh and Beck, and others, into line? The World has turned upside down. But watch. If the Democrats make a comeback before November, the "birthers" will rise again, and NOT be questioned by the Republican Press/Media.

"Misspoke" is the new way to say "Lying" I guess. Either he is lying now or he was then, either way he has proven he is not above lying if it suits his purpose. Typical politician and that is exactly what we don't need... MORE LYING POLITICIANS in DC.

Looks like the "birthers" are politically dead. So, there is a line of demarcation out there that right wingers cannot cross and still have enough support to hope for election. Beyond that line lie the concepts of birther, flat earth, and membership in the Klan or Nazi Party.

Other than that, the right can spout any bogus belief or lie they want and still consider themselves "mainstream".

This people in this country have been dumbed-down by the previous administration to the point where they actually believe the opposition to President Obama would let him get past even the primaries.

Do you nutjobs not undestand how many lawyers in DC look for every wart - every wrinkle - the primary contestants have?

Some Americans should be ashamed of themselves for what they are trying to do to this President, the sad part is they are not. I pray for him and his beautiful family everyday because they don't deserve all the hate they are getting. Most of this is NOT because of this policies, but rather who he is in general. Someday we will all have to stand before our maker and answer for our actions!
