Williams resigns as Tea Party Express spokesman

Mark Williams has resigned as the spokesman of the Tea Party Express.
Mark Williams has resigned as the spokesman of the Tea Party Express.

Washington (CNN) – Tea Party Express spokesman and former chairman Mark Williams has resigned his post, the group said Friday in a statement.

Last week Williams penned an inflammatory blog post that erupted into a national controversy and fueled debate about the Tea Party movement and racism. Williams later defended the post as satire.

"The media coverage over a recent satirical posting on my personal MarkTalk.com blog risks injuring the Tea Party Express, the tea party movement as a whole, and the people in this movement who I respect and admire so much," Williams said in resignation letter released Friday. "It has become increasingly unacceptable that the media and our domestic enemies continue to anoint me as the official voice of a massively diverse and broad-based movement."

Williams wrote the incendiary blog post in response to an NAACP resolution that called on Tea Party leaders to crack down on racist elements in the movement.

"Dear Mr. Lincoln," began the fictional letter posted by Williams. "We Coloreds have taken a vote and decided that we don't cotton to that whole emancipation thing. Freedom means having to work for real, think for ourselves, and take consequences along with the rewards. That is just far too much to ask of us Colored People and we demand that it stop!"

Williams went on to write that the Tea Party movement couldn't be racist because it opposed government bailouts for Wall Street banks and big corporations.

"Bailouts are just big money welfare and isn't that what we want all Coloreds to strive for?" the posting said. "What kind of racist would want to end big money welfare? What they need to do is start handing the bailouts directly to us coloreds!"

The National Tea Party Federation, an organization that seeks to represent the Tea Party political movement around the country, expelled Williams and his Tea Party Express organization because of the post Sunday.

In his letter of resignation, Williams said he will continue to advocate for Tea Party issues, but will no longer be associated with the Tea Party Express because his association with the group has become a liability.

"We are in a war for the future of this country and the Left and their allies in the news media have decided to use my personal comments and views as a weapon to injure the Tea Party movement and conservative activists. I will simply not allow them to do this," Williams said.

Williams resigned as chairman of the group in June.

When you are the chairman of an organization, your comments and views DO represent that organization. That's what being a leader is.

I will NEVER cease to be amazed at how when someone on the right says something WAAAAY over the top it's not that comment that's wrong but the media. Too funny!

So the tea baggers lost one of their idiots – another loon will step up and take his place. Question is, will this one be as overly bigoted as Williams?

I guess someone finally figured out how crazy the tea party was. Now we can get back to only having two parties.

Enough said. Instead of simply renouncing the racist bigots that are hijacking the GOP and Tea Party...he embraces it and would rather instigate racial division.

Good. It's about time that one of these spoiled little brats found out that making a nasty, racist comment in public has consequences.

  12. Call it for what it is....

We think that tribalism only excists over there....!

Some will call a country with its Citizen of multiracial mix "Multiculture"
We, prefer to call it for what is is "A Nation of Tribalism pure and simple. So under these conditions we must stop using the word raceism and look at it as the intolerance and bigotry among the various ethnic groups They create whitin the country their own mini-nations called : the black community, the hispanic community, etc How about joing the "United States of America"...Looking around the world one must agree that there is no such thing as a perfect Union anywhere............................!

Is this news? Didn`t this happen like a week ago? Where is the story about the Black Panther Party leader who was arrested for voter intimidation charges? Where is the story about how he is on video screaming for blacks to kill white babies?

William's comment, "It has become increasingly unacceptable that the media and our domestic enemies continue to anoint me as the official voice of a massively diverse and broad-based movement," sounds more like the rantings of Hitler when he failed at his first attempt to forcefully take power in Europe.

His statements just prove that the tea-party is an extension of the extreme right-wing agenda. Something they argued against. Thanks for finally admitting it. "We are in a war for the future of this country and the Left and their allies in the news media.." You wouldn't attack just the left if you are under the guise of being in the middle. Your cover is officially blown!

Good riddens! The Tea Party movement must be devoid of any any possible hint re: racism! The Democratic Party should follow in its footprint!

How can this man possibly believe that his commentary is not racist? He is either delusional or ignorant. There are many good people in the Tea Party but they must realize that the racists are on their team. If they don’t want to continue to be perceived as racist, they must root out the ones that are. No matter what your philosophy is for this country’s future is everyone needs to stand up against this despicable racist element!

Right, because the conservative movement in the US certainly doesn't have an ally in the media. There's definitely not a "news" organization that will in one day push a story that fits into their political agenda and end up costing a role model for all humans her job and then the very next day lambaste others for not taking the time to get the full story before drawing conclusions.

People like Williams make my blood pressure rise to unhealthy levels.

This man is a sick, sick individual. His words sting in my eyes and make me want to be sick. It saddens me greatly that people still use such horribly demeaning terms such as "colored." This man must never have gone to school. I desire to say something against the Tea Party movement, but unlike other indidivuals, I will not judge an entire movement by one sick, uneducated, ignorant, completely wrong individual. However, has anyone noticed a great number of the Tea Party's esteemed members have similar opinions??

I really can't believe that any mature thinking adult would believe that comments like that are ok, even as "satire". Frankly, I don't think it would ever cross my mind to use the word "coloreds" in a sentence, MUCH LESS in such a terrible way. If this was his misguided attempt to show that the Tea Party isn't racist...well I would have to question not only his intelligence but his sanity.

I myself am white, and while I am not as conservative as the Tea Party I am not liberal either. But I would NEVER associate myself with anyone or any organization that harbors people who think this type of behavior is ok, even in jest.

"It has become increasingly unacceptable that the media and our domestic enemies continue to anoint me as the official voice of a massively diverse and broad-based movement."
    -------------------------------–

"....the official voice.." Isn't that the definition of a spokesman???
For someone who purports to know how to write SATIRE, this yokel cannot even write a sentence that correctly expresses his so-called sentiments. I've re-read the above sentence over and over, and it sounds to me that he is complaining about the media seeing him as the spokesman for the T-Party. Well, isn't he the spokesman and chairperson?!

Goodbye ding-dong. Rest assured that EVERYONE in America now knows who you are, and what you are all about. I'm sure the Rethugs will find you a new venue where you can continue to contaminate the general public.

  24. Say what?

I keep hearing about it being a "satirical" letter. The way he phrased things in the letter, would Mr. Williams also think it being delivered in black face satirical also?
