Williams resigns as Tea Party Express spokesman

Mark Williams has resigned as the spokesman of the Tea Party Express.
Mark Williams has resigned as the spokesman of the Tea Party Express.

Washington (CNN) – Tea Party Express spokesman and former chairman Mark Williams has resigned his post, the group said Friday in a statement.

Last week Williams penned an inflammatory blog post that erupted into a national controversy and fueled debate about the Tea Party movement and racism. Williams later defended the post as satire.

"The media coverage over a recent satirical posting on my personal MarkTalk.com blog risks injuring the Tea Party Express, the tea party movement as a whole, and the people in this movement who I respect and admire so much," Williams said in resignation letter released Friday. "It has become increasingly unacceptable that the media and our domestic enemies continue to anoint me as the official voice of a massively diverse and broad-based movement."

Williams wrote the incendiary blog post in response to an NAACP resolution that called on Tea Party leaders to crack down on racist elements in the movement.

"Dear Mr. Lincoln," began the fictional letter posted by Williams. "We Coloreds have taken a vote and decided that we don't cotton to that whole emancipation thing. Freedom means having to work for real, think for ourselves, and take consequences along with the rewards. That is just far too much to ask of us Colored People and we demand that it stop!"

Williams went on to write that the Tea Party movement couldn't be racist because it opposed government bailouts for Wall Street banks and big corporations.

"Bailouts are just big money welfare and isn't that what we want all Coloreds to strive for?" the posting said. "What kind of racist would want to end big money welfare? What they need to do is start handing the bailouts directly to us coloreds!"

The National Tea Party Federation, an organization that seeks to represent the Tea Party political movement around the country, expelled Williams and his Tea Party Express organization because of the post Sunday.

In his letter of resignation, Williams said he will continue to advocate for Tea Party issues, but will no longer be associated with the Tea Party Express because his association with the group has become a liability.

"We are in a war for the future of this country and the Left and their allies in the news media have decided to use my personal comments and views as a weapon to injure the Tea Party movement and conservative activists. I will simply not allow them to do this," Williams said.

Williams resigned as chairman of the group in June.

How sick! This is their leader?! Was this supposed to prove that he doesn't have a racist mindset? Was this supposed to make minorites want to join the Tea Party? Was he trying to make all of America feel good with these words?

Domestic enemies? It's clear that this guy is unfit for politics. "Doesn't get along with others" is the phrase that comes to mind, and politicians need to get along with others whether they be dealing with domestic issues or foreign policy. Can you imagine him trying to hold an intelligent, relevant conversation with a foreign leader, especially an Arab one? We'd have nothing but enemies and war under this guy's leadership, if one would call it that. He is also full of complaints and has no solutions, except maybe eliminate taxes, which would leave us with quite a mess without eliminating spending, which is also unrealistic and he is also short on ideas there, too.

"We are in a war for the future of this country and the Left and their allies in the news media..." Sounds like a fascist diatribe to me. When will these people learn to tolerate others' opinions both political and personal. Their self-righteousness is dividing this country when it doesn't need to be. Soooooo un-American!

Only a complete idiot could right or read about "we coloreds" and not think it was racist. This jerk doesn't think he's a racist he has a stilted view of reality.

Talk about a teaching moment. What this event proves is not just that the guy is a racist, but that he is so disconnected from reality that he didn't realize how this would be interpreted. That is either arrogance or stupidity, or maybe both, and is typical of the majority of tea-partiers.

Thing is, Williams, you got fired. Plane and simple. How Republican of you to keep up the attacks, though. Let me know when you decide who the media allies on the left are. I'd like to listen to what they have to say for once. Otherwise, it's all been anti-Obama BS coming from both the right and the *supposed* left. Too much lobbying I expect.

Funny thing is, all the Republican fear mongering coming from the right is ONLY making the right more fearful than is their norm. They are beginning to lash out at themselves now.

Couldn't happen to a better group of fools.

Mark Williams speaks what all the Tea Baggers want to say but don't have the courage. (Yet.) He, and they, are racist idiots. Tea Bagging is not about getting "their" country back, it's about getting rid of the black guy in office. Plain and simple.

Election time is here. The WH has mobilized its media arm and in partnership with CNN, MSNBC, NBC, will organize a theme attack. GOP are racists, Tea partiers are racists, Fox News is bad.

Oh, when will you people learn that the folks out there are not dumb and the more you patronize them, the more turned off they are. That's right, they litterally turn you off their TV.

Man, is this guy tone deaf, or what? Still calling it "satire" instead of the inflammatory and barely thinly veiled racism that it was, it amounts to a non-apology-apology in the classic definition. And "risks injuring the Tea Party Express"? There is no *risk*. The damage, not only to his narrow faction but to the tea party movement as a whole, is long past done. This idiot handed the statists an unassailable victory on a silver platter, certainly in this battle, and probably in the war. The guy should never have been given an opportunity to resign.. he should have been forcibly and repeatedly repudiated by anyone with an ounce of common sense. That he wasn't says everything that needs to be known about the Tea Party Express faction of the movement, and perhaps of the movement in general. A movement that once had noble goals, has been reduced to this debacle. How sad.

Now that is how you win votes. These people are so savvy it is scary.

Do you not understand that your base is your base. Hateful, poor, ignorant, and uneducated whites will not vote Democrat anyhow.

    As the commercials state: GENIUS!!!

If he truly wanted the Tea Party to become viable political party he would not have sabotaged with it the same rhetoric spoken all the time at these rallies, behind closed doors, and within the active membership. WE ALL KNOW YOU GUYS ARE RACIST. Quit spelling it out for us. You are not helping your cause!!!

"We are in a war for the future of this country and the Left and their allies in the news media have decided to use my personal comments and views as a weapon to injure the Tea Party movement and conservative activists. I will simply not allow them to do this," Williams said.
First of all they were not personal comments. He was representing the TP when he blogged. And secondly the Tea Party inevitable injures itself by allowing its members and leaders to speak. If they did not want people to know they were hateful and ignorant, they would have a clear operational plan with logical expected results. Instead they have bumper sticker slogans and signs made out of cardboard boxes.
On the bright side, he did openly admit he was an activist; I thought that was a dirty word.

After reading Mr. Williams blog, I find it inflamatory and racist. There is no satire to be found in this diatribe. As I see it he played right into the hands of those who wish to debunk the movement, which is founded on Constituional principles.

In every movement there are people with their own agendas and essentially "bad apples" . We see this in both the GOP and Democratic Parties.

Good bye Mr. Williams, we don't need people like you
