Tancredo running for gov, gets in shouting match with GOP chair

Tom Tancredo will run for governor of Colorado.
Tom Tancredo will run for governor of Colorado.

(Updated with Tancredo comments)

(CNN) – Conservative firebrand Tom Tancredo will run for governor of Colorado despite strident objections from the state GOP, the former congressman is set to announce later Monday.

Tancredo floated the possibility of a third-party gubernatorial run last week, demanding that the two-current GOP candidates who have both been beset by scandals withdraw from the race after the August 10 primary if polls show Democrat John Hickenlooper far ahead.

The Republicans - Scott McInnis and Dan Maes - both scoffed at Tancredo's threat, prompting the onetime Republican presidential candidate to step up his announcement.

"I will officially announce at noon that I will seek the nomination of the constitution party," Tancredo told The Denver Post.

The move gave rise to a heated exchange between Tancredo and Colorado GOP chairman Dick Wadhams on local radio station KHOW Monday, with the two men descending into a shouting match over what is best for the Colorado Republican party.

"Why don't you wait until after the primary?" Wadhams implored Tancredo.

"Because you know as well as I do, if I am going to run, I have to get going," responded Tancredo. "There is no downside for either one of these guys to simply say 'If I am not ahead at that time I will get out.'"

"What will your agenda be?" Wadhams also asked Tancredo sarcastically. "Are you going to keep talking about impeaching Obama and bombing Mecca?

McInnis, a prominent Colorado lawyer apologized earlier this month for plagiarizing several passages of a judge's work in producing a series of essays for which he was paid $300,000 to write as part of a fellowship in 2003. Maes, meanwhile, is facing political troubles too, agreeing earlier this month to pay more than $17,000 in a fine for campaign finance violations.

Wow! You're a lot nicer than I am!!!!

I'll just leave it at that because CNN wouldn't have the courage to post what I would say about Tancredo!

This creep has said some of the most outrageous, ridiculous, racist, stupid comments I have ever heard on political news programs – both left and right. He's in the same circle as Palin, Bachmann, Angle, Paul, Barber , Haywood – just plain crazy talk. I cannot believe he ever was elected to Congress in the first place. Come on Colorado, you can do better than this!!

Immigrant? Who, Tancredo? Surely, with a name like that, his ancestors came over with Columbus. Me, I must be Mayflower, because in some years my fruit trees may flower, and in other years, they may not.

Colorado is like Washington State, lost in a time of the past, with no forward movement while sitting on vast amounts of shale oil and coal whinning about why they can not get ahead.

Let's see. The other GOP candidates are in some kind of scandel. Constitution Party? Just read Ann Coulter Bio, she's a constitutional attorney. Glen Beck likes to educate his followers about the constitution. That's enough. VOTE for the Democrat. See how easy that is folks? Nothing to it. (I think this thought process will be going on a lot in November, at least I hope so)

  8. Colorado Liberal

That's all we need in Colorado is Tom Tancredo running the state.

The State of Colorado is spectacularly beautiful, but it presents quite a paradox. Boulder and Denver are two of the most highly educated and liberal cities in the United States, yet much of the rest of the state despises those two cities for their liberalism and secretly (or not so secretly) envies them for their success.

Boulder, too, is paradoxical. We have a largely liberal population (with quite a few pseudo-liberals) and yet we have a significant conservative population which largely runs the community from behind the scenes. We are probably more environmentally conscious than many places–yet many here believe that the municipal government may be in bed with Monsanto–which has an office in Boulder, Colorado! Yes, you read correctly. By the way, our city government thinks it is OK to use "Roundup" (banned in France) in public parks right next to streams–very liberal, indeed. The city government also tolerates the use of GMOs on our so-called "open space" which conservatives and developers would like to make…less open.

The "liberal" University of Colorado at Boulder is run by highly conservative Republicans and has been for decades. Freedom of speech at CU Boulder is punished, professors whose research is inconvenient may be terminated, and important "liberal arts" courses are being terminated. A liberal university, you say? Hardly.

One could go on and on. Buy I only want to repeat what should be obvious (but is not) to most Americans: appearances are deceiving.

GI Joe Separatists. Gotta love em. Tom Tancreado will not become governor of Colorado. He is a 1 item agenda kind of guy. Thinks about nothing but immigration. He couldn't solve a real issue if he had to. Didn't in the Congress and won't anywhere else. Like Palin, this relic needs to fade away

"...people who could not even spell the word 'vote', or say it in English, put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House. His name is Barack Hussein Obama."

There is nothing more to say. This comment says it all!!! Mind you that Tancredo made this statement as the opening speaker at a TEA PARTY CONVENTION, not some random person at a rally. Tancredo and at least 10% of the TEA PARTY are racists. And anyone who thinks that this guy is credible and votes for him is a supporter of his racist agenda...PERIOD!!

Colorado Republicans are the best thing that ever happened to the Democrats. I look forward to November when we will elect Hickenlooper as our Governor. The Republicans can't find a candidate to run against a man who has cut Denver's budget significantly without much impact on the quality of the city. It's also a hoot to see Republicans running against a very successful small business man who was instrumental in the revitalization of lower downtown long before he ever though to seek an elected office. The Republicans never had a chance and now they will simply provide the slapstick entertainment while Hick claims the Governor's office.

American Constitution Party: This is so so funny that The king of the Tea Baggers is now changing their name to American Constitution Party. So let me get this straight, he thinks by calling the Tea Baggers other name it will get him the votes he need. Now that the Tea Baggers have bee exposed of the racist group they are now that want to change their name. Sorry, us American votes are not buying what the Tea Baggers are trying to sell. I really don’t thing the Republican party really want to win back anything in Nov. with the likes of all these Tea Baggers that have hijacked the Republicans party.

We are already a two party system, with one party that works, the other one does nothing but complain and obstruct. We surely do not need a third party,,,particulary with this loser.

Sweet....anyone who read his opening comments at that farce of a Tealiban "convention" knows this guys survives on Crazy Flakes and chicken milk. He's a blatant racist and all-around nutjob and I, for one, couldn't be happier to hear that he will be making a more concerted effort to loudly and frequently broadcast his views in the name of conservatives across the country.

Tancredo has on many occasions voiced some extremely xenophobic and bigoted rants. It will be interesting to see if he will walk back on his earlier statements and positions like other Tea party Candidates have had to do - Sharon Angle and Rand Paul easily come to mind.

Just another proof point of the splintering of the Republican party. It's interesting to watch them eat their own now that the power they had has been taken away from them.

    I can't say that I am surprised.

I happen to be a friend of Tom Tancredo and I guarantee not a single one of the bloggers above know that he's a lot more than just "Illegal immigration". Does he occasionally insert his foot into his mouth? Yes he does! But he does so because of his passion to return the United States to it's former self...And one other thing, he's at least honest. If he says it, it's the truth. So go bash all the rest of those lying SOB's in the House and Senate, for forgetting what they should have learned in kindergarten...I SHALL NOT LIE.

You reap what you sow. If nuts like this are voted in to office, then the people get what they deserve. I can not imagine one person (other than maybe a family member of his) who would actually vote for the clown. I'm sorry – the teabaggers probaly love him too. . . I'm sure Sarah will come out with her endorsement any day now. Enough said! Colorado – be afraid, be very afraid if someone like this gets in to office. What a waste of a beautiful state.
