Rendell says View may not be appropriate for Obama

(CNN) – President Obama is taking some flak from a fellow Democrat over his plans to appear on daytime gabfest The View later this week.

Speaking on MSNBC's Morning Joe, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell suggested the ABC talk-show - which often directs its focus on tabloid stories and celebrity mishaps - may not be an appropriate forum for a sitting President of the United States.

"I think the president should be accessible, should answer questions that aren't pre-screened, but I think there should be a little bit of dignity to the presidency," Rendell said. (Video via Matt Lewis at Politics Daily)

Rendell, the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, also likened The View to the Jerry Springer Show – the famed program that has long spotlighted dysfunctional family situations.

"I think there are some shows - I wouldn't put him on Jerry Springer either," said Rendell.
"It is different a little bit. But I think the President of the United States has to go on serious shows."

But Rendell, who will leave the governor's office at the end of the year, conceded The View will provide Obama with a good opportunity to go off the teleprompter – something Rendell says the president should do more often.

"If I was advising President Obama, I'd say do as much ad hoc as you can do," he said. "He doesn't have to scripted, he doesn't have to be telepromptered."

Obama will sit down with The View cohosts for a pre-taped interview Wednesday, the first sitting president to appear on a daytime talk show. The segment is scheduled to air Thursday.

Obama appeared on the program in 2008 when he was a presidential candidate and Vice President Joe Biden was a guest last April.

Actually, from Obama's point of view, this drivel of a show is a perfect venue–surrounded, with one apparent exception (so I understand–I've never actually watched the show), a bunch of flaming Lefties, he's not going to get any hard-ball questions. To the contrary, it'll likely be a feel-good segment with a lot of ego-stroking going on in all directions.

Totally agree here. The View is NOT an appropriate forum for the President....regardless of which president! The View may get the ratings, but the presidency itself has been diminished to the "noise" & "nonsense" of talk shows. Then again, it's the viewership of that show that may have gotten him elected....

The View is a good place for Obama to continue his campaign with the American voter because it represents the common person/woman. The show includes points of view from the far right to the far left which is consistent with the U.S. population.

There was little dignity left in the office of President – but even that timy bit is now gone. Why not just do the Jerry Springer show? Bring Biden along for some fun.

The View will have another love fest with Obama. No important information will be imparted. No news here. It got him out of the BSA event. Why doesn't he go all the way and get in Playgirl. I'm not buying either one.

But.......He is blowing off a very historic meeting of the BSA to get face time on daytime TV. Priorities!

Face time is important but showing our youth that commitment and dedication are important traits and is recognized is so needed right now.

Sad, sad, sad...... He should have more respect for the office of the US President. Wish he would work for a change instead of this garbage.

Please someone explain to me the point of this interview.

Is he going to be asked important questions that matters to the nation?
Is this interview going to clear up the questions on Obama care, on financial takeover of the country, or why did he back the release of the terorist but in public said he is outraged by it.

is this interview going to help us understand why the unemployment is still at 9% and growing.

What is the point of this interview other than a make me look good chat.

President Obama has made a big mistake in going on the view. He should be working with corporations to get jobs back to the millions who have lost their job and not spending time on these ridiculous shows.

He is pushing amnesty,, and now the Dream Act, only because he along with the Democrats want to turn this country into the rich and poor mentality so that we are like other 3rd world countries. This plan by the European Union and the US is to bilk themselves with millions and increasing the poor status around the world. Well, it is not going to work, because we will get these people out of office.

Obama talks tough and big, but does absolutely nothing to gain support of Americans, but rather to ensure re-elections, he, along with Reid, Pelosi, and Durbin are again pushing the Dream Act.

READ MY LIPS, NO AMNESTY, NO PATHWAY TO CITISENSHIP, AND NO DREAM ACT.

Maybe he should go on Meet the Press or Hard Ball or someother news media show. Not the View. The View is the most dumbest show with a bunch of old babbling woman on it that don't know shit about anything!!! This country is going down the drain!!!!

Why are people so petty these days, dignity!!! This is part of what real presidents do they are not afraid to go to the people no matter where they may be.

I personally think a sitting President should avoid the "GOTCHA media" and the 24 hour news cycles. But then they would be accused darn near treason.

People who have not sat in the position of President should relax a little its just so easy to arm chair quarterback someone elses game....

I couldn't agree with Gov Rendell more. Barbara Walters is even coming back sooner (from surgery) just to gush over Obama...yuk! That certainly is no place for a president. It is a photo op and a chance to answer soft-ball type questions.

I would also like to see my senior senator John Kerry answer the medias questions...I am surprised that CNN has not followed this story. If you live in MA it is a big deal since if you purchase a large ticket item in another state you are supposed to report it on taxes and pay excise tax. Heck even furniture bought in NH (a non-tax state) is required to report to Revenue of MA purchases if they deliver to MA.

How dare Governor Rendell think he can determine what shows are serious or have a viewership that's paying attention to our government and the issues US citizens are facing.

Women voters make up a signficant portion of the electorate and many of them don't care to watch the typical folks (and we know who they are) pontificate about how America and our President is doing, according to them.

President Obama is smart enough to know that people (and yes that means women too) will turn in to see him on the View just like people did when he was on Jay Leno.

He is the PEOPLE's President. Not just the elected official's or just white American men's President. Other genders and ethnic groups count too and WE will be watching him on THE VIEW...

This is so degrading to the office of the presidency!!! To think that he would use our taxpayer dollars to go on a daily talk show that entertains rather than gives news; whose moderators are outlandish in many of their views!!! 2012 can't come soon enough for this voter!!!! WE need to rid ourselves of this man and his handlers!!!!

It is appropriate. Actually, I think he should host "The View". Next I think he should be on dancing with stars.
There seems to be a narcissistic need to be on TV 24/7. I think psychologist are going to term the condition of "excess media desire disorder" EMDD or Obamosis. The condition defined by the need to be on TV, or in the media, 24/7.

With luck, Elisabeth Hasselbeck will call in sick so the President and other View hosts can have an objective discussion.

Knock off the petty bs. First off the man is the President of the United States. Secondly, the has a personality and shows intelligence putting more than two sentences together, considering past Presidents of record. Thirdly, why in blazes would anyone want to be President considering the climate of the opposition party who's main goal, at the expense of the American people, wants to destroy him.???. I like this guy and I'll give him the repect he deserves.

I don't understand this president at all. With all of the things happening in our country, i.e. the economy, the war, the BP spill, etc. he finds it more important to go to fundraisers, gabfests, vacations etc. than take care of the country's business. There are always excuses made for him or by him. And I'm tired of the blame game he plays to hide his own failures and lack of focus. I did not vote for George Bush, but I did vote for Obama. I will not make that mistake a second time.

"And if I hear one more person accusing others of being racist just because they don't agree with you I'm going to scream. This could cause a real war."

That's right...it's not because of signs with Obama in white face or as a voodoo with doctor or because of plush moneky toys with nooses around their necks or people like Mark Williams and the constant stream of racist screed issuing forth from a large portion of the angry, resentful, Teatarded true-believing tinfoil hat wearing GOPer base. Oh no. It's solely because you disagree. Moron.
