This day in Ticker history: Country will look at itself differently the day I'm inaugurated, Obama says

Editor's Note: The following story appeared on the CNN Political Ticker on July 27, 2007.

(CNN ) – Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama says the nation will look at itself differently the day he is inaugurated as America’s first black president.

Obama was addressing the National Urban League Convention’s presidential forum in St. Louis when he was asked what he could do to stop racial polarization in the U.S. Holding up his hand like he was taking the oath, the Illinois senator said, “The day I’m inaugurated, the country looks at itself differently. And don’t underestimate that power. Don’t underestimate that transformation.”

He told the crowd that endless high-minded discussions weren’t the answer to the problem. He said, “Here’s what I won’t do, because we do this all the time. I’m not going to set up a commission, and I’m not going to have a conversation, because we set those up with a lot of fanfare and there’s not any follow-up.”

Obama said that, as president, it would be more important to discuss specific issues as they come up “each and every day.”

We're definitely looking at ourselves differently Mr. President. The majority in this country(democrats) are looking at the minority of this country(republicans) for who they really are.

    Obama was right....

We certainly DO look at ourselves differently now.... as a rapidly declining socialist nation that is a pitiful shadow of what we once used to be. Thanks, Barack.

More lies from Nobama – what's new? Racism has taken on a whole new meaning since he's taken office and certainly not for the good of all races! He is divisive and so is Holder.

I am sure looking at my shrinking wallet, retirement funds and savings differently. This inept, incompetent, corrupt, union toady has made sure that those of us who take personal responsibilty for our lives suffer while the dope smoking, non working, non taxpaying reap the benefits of his thefts from us. The real view from the working people is quite different from that portrayed by the "Nutwork Nation." Psst.....this is not the "Summer of Prosperity." That will not occur until we get rid of this clown.

Please, CNN, can you stop using "This day in Ticker history" to scare up old arguments and set aflame divisions already put to rest? You should be encouraging a civil political dialogue, not fomenting the bitter rancor that has gripped our national landscape.

Shame on CNN for building up divisive walls rather than laying common ground!

No one man has done more to divide Americans and pin us against each other that Barak Obama.

Shame, I wish our first African American president was a uniter like JC Watts or Alan Keyes, rather than a guy who makes statements like they cling to their guns and religion and typical white grandmother.

Well at least Robert Byrd got his wish before he passed on.

"This day in Ticker History" is another attempt by CNN to cause contraversy and/or compare what was said in the past and how it CHANGED in the future. I guarantee you that 9 out of 10 post will be about President Obama... So far, I think it was 3 post and 2 two so far is about President Obama!!!

What did a RepubliCAN'T do this day a year ago????????? NOTHING – NADA – the Party of NO!!

  15. Save America, impeach the treasonous republicans

The republicans have used the last 18 months to group together and pick lice off each other and throw turds at those trying to move this country forward.

Obama is absolutely correct. This country USED to look at itself as an economic powerhouse where consistent economic growth raised the standard of living for EVERY citizen and, as per the Constitution, allowed each citizen the opportunity to pursue success. In addition our strength protected ourselves from foreign threats.

That has COMPLETELY changes. This president (and Democrat Party) has CREATED a Great Recession (Dems had control of Congress since 2006 and their policies started the economic callapse we saw starting end of 2007) and has shredded the Constitution. In addition Obama has supported our enemies and "apologized" to the world for the behavior of our great country?

He is correct that this country looks different now that he has taken office. The questions is can we correct his incredible and incompetent changes.........

Didn't Obama just set up a commission?

As far as discussing issues that come up each and every day, why does it seem like Obama is always slow to react? Case in point:

3 days to respond to Xmas Bomber
Almost 30 days to visit gulf.

Moreover, all he has done since becoming president is fuel racial tensions. Just look at his knee jerk response to the Harvard professor situation, and most recently with Shirley Sherrod.

This guy has more learning opportunities then anyone, and yet he never seems to learn anything.

he has been full of himself for years............

the country will look at itself differently just because he is president? just because he is the first black president?

the country has larger problems other than a black president

and they are getting worse since his inauguration..............so yeah, we look at this country differently and say."We are full of stupids for electing this fool"

powerful, power, control...............forget the president, he maybe the first black sith lord

    watch the movies............scary
