Snowe becomes fourth Republican to endorse Kagan's confirmation

Sen. Olympia Snowe announced Wednesday that she will vote to confirm Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court.
Sen. Olympia Snowe announced Wednesday that she will vote to confirm Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court.

(CNN) – Sen. Olympia Snowe said Wednesday she will vote to confirm Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court, making her the fourth Republican to come out in support of President Obama's nominee to the high court.

"Throughout my tenure in the Senate, I have applied a uniform standard for evaluating nominees for the United States Supreme Court, under both Republican and Democratic administrations," said Snowe in statement. "I find that Ms. Kagan has met that standard with the strong intellect, respect for the rule of law, and understanding of the important but limited role of the Supreme Court that I believe is required of any Justice.”

Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina; Susan Collins, R-Maine; and Richard Lugar, R-Indiana, have also said they will vote for Kagan. No Democrats have expressed opposition to Kagan.

The current solicitor general and former Harvard Law School dean is expected to easily win confirmation, but likely with less Republican support than the nine GOP votes Justice Sonia Sotomayor garnered a year ago.

Full statement from Snowe, after the jump:

"After a careful and considered review of Elena Kagan's testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, her overall record, and my personal meeting with her, I have concluded that General Kagan should be confirmed," Senator Snowe said.

"Throughout my tenure in the Senate, I have applied a uniform standard for evaluating nominees for the United States Supreme Court, under both Republican and Democratic administrations. I find that Ms. Kagan has met that standard with the strong intellect, respect for the rule of law, and understanding of the important but limited role of the Supreme Court that I believe is required of any Justice. On that note, she has testified and spoken about the necessity of courts to maintain a fidelity to the law, and of the essential requirement not to pre-judge any case, stating during her hearing that judging is about '…what the law says, whether it's the Constitution or whether it's a statute…the question is always what the law says…it's what the text of the Constitution says…what the law says, not a judge's personal views.'

"It also is significant that, for her work as Solicitor General, Ms. Kagan has won the support of all ten Solicitors General who have served since 1985, including five Republican appointees, and she has also earned the support of over fifty deputy and assistant solicitors general who have served over the last forty-two years. Indeed by all accounts – including those from conservative former Solicitors General Ken Starr and Ted Olson, and Assistant Solicitor General Miguel Estrada - General Kagan has a clear reputation for a sound judicial temperament.

"Also, she has affirmed forcefully that adherence to Court precedent is a vital command for the Court. And in that light, in my view as a longtime, ardent supporter of Second Amendment rights, it was critical that General Kagan stated during her testimony that the precedents set by the Supreme Court in the Heller and McDonald cases – which upheld a personal right to possess a firearm - are 'deeply rooted in this nation's history and traditions' and are 'settled law;' that she has 'absolutely no reason to think that the court's analysis was incorrect in any way;' and, that she will apply these cases as law 'going forward.'"

Snowe and Collins are the only Republicans who care about the People of this country and the true recovery efforts for the People.

The rest of the Republican Party hates American workers and only cares about big corporations who use illegal workers at slave wages, cheat the govt out of required employer taxes and ship good America jobs overseas with no consequence.

Republicans are traitors and destroyers and we need to get ALL of them out of our government. Democrats are the Party of the PEOPLE and have worked hard and DELIVERED real solutions for the PEOPLE to help the middle class and working familes. They take their oath of office seriously to serve the PEOPLE.

Republicans only serve themsevles, their rich buddies and the abusive corporations who buy their votes for large campaign contributions, Republicans are unethical, characterless, unAmerican, callous, and could care less what happens to the working people trying to survive. They do not deserve the honor of serving in the House of Congress. They are do-nothing liars and we need to remove them from their positions of destruction.

Vote for the Democrats if you value America and the middle class, jobs, fairness, real solutions, and honest work for making America a better place to live for ALL.

NO more Republicans. No more of their hate, lies, fear-mongering, and racism. Who needs enemies when we have Republicans working against America??

Olympia Snowe is so old, has been there so long that she could care less what issues are before her, she'll vote yes on anything or anyone just as long as she gets it off her desk quickly. I can't figure out why people keep voting for this people that have been there for so many years that they stopped caring. What can Kagan guarantee when she's never been a Judge???? It's a joke what Kagan thinks of how courts should proceed or judges and of requirements not to pre-judge when she has never ran a court, what does she know of courtrooms?????? This is mockery, insult to our court system.
