(CNN) – New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie may have learned a valuable lesson this week: Don't mess with the cast of the hit MTV reality show The Jersey Shore.
Several of the cast members took aim at Christie's recent criticisms that targeted their wild antics, saying the governor is missing the point of the raucous reality show that has made Seaside Heights, New Jersey an infamous symbol of endless partying, lascivious get-togethers, and barroom brawls.
"Our show is about coming to the shore and having a good time," Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi told NBC's The Today Show Thursday. "You don't have to be from New Jersey. The shore is about getting a shore house. You can be from you know, Connecticut, whatever, New York. You come down here and have a good time."
Snooki's comments come days after Christie, the newly-minted New Jersey governor, said the show is an "unrealistic" and "negative" portrayal of his beloved Garden State, and encouraged Americans to vacation on the state's shoreline despite what they see on MTV.
"What it does is it takes a bunch of New Yorkers, who are – most of the people on 'Jersey Shore' are New Yorkers – takes a bunch of New Yorkers, drops them at the Jersey shore, and tries to make America feel like this is New Jersey," Christie said on ABC's This Week.
"I love New Jersey. I love coming here," said Paul "DJ Pauly D" DelVecchio, dismissing Christie's comments. "It's a blast and everybody like to have us here. We have a lot of friends here."
"And if we can help out the pockets of New Jersey that's a big bonus for us," added Vinny Guadagnino.
For the record, six of the show's eight cast members are from New York. Only one is from New Jersey while the other is from Rhode Island.

Does anyone really care what these arrogant, self-absorbed morons have to say (about politics anyway)? On a side note, if anyone ever tried to convince me people in the south are the fattest in the nation I'd have a hard time believing it based on this photo...
TV is so worthless, it doesn't merit any discussion on here.
Ugly people, Awful television show. Yech !!
Who cares what a bunch of reality show punks think? They make a strong argument that we have too many cable channels. We no longer have to be selective about what to air...with so many channels, there's even room for stupid reality shows like theirs.
A stupid show about stupid people set in a cesspool.
Sounds like Jersey Shore is a drama. Other than one of the characters being a politician, I'm missing the politics of the story. TMZ material.
Two questions:
Do you have to act like jackholes to have a good time?
Why are these jerks always Italians?
Apparently it's okay to skewer Italians and New Jersey? From The Sopranos to Jerseylicious to Jersey Couture to the Housewives of New Jersey, Italians are raked over the coals. Can you imagine the outcry if these immature, selfish, money hungry excuses for human beings were, say, African American or Jewish? And really, CNN, this is news?
I don't care where they are from, these people are moronic trash.
These useless young people should go into the service. We have so many wonderful quality kids in Iraq and Afghanistan risking their lives so morons like these can act like jerks and disparage a dignified and talented ethnic group-Italian Americans. These people do not deserve the attention they are garnering. I mentioned they should go into the service, but on second thought, they probably are too dumb and would fail miserably the ASVAB, and the service would reject them anyway. They are all a disgrace with no oral code. Could they have been brought up as Catholics? Most Italians are Catholics. They all need the confessional quick! These boys view women as objects of their sexual prowess, and the consenting women have no respect for themselves!
Trash TV at its best.
This is what passes as entertainment. No wonder people are growing up or dumb and ignorant!
the dumbing of America at work. USA best product
It is a reality TV show and a very poor one at that. Blame it on Americans that would rather watch crap on TV than read, take a walk, or acctually interact with their children without the TV on. We as a nation become dumber every day.
Snooki doesn't have a clue. She and her friends are on there for fame and money and don't even realize what is happening. They are having fun and don't care about what they are seen as.
What they may think the show is about and what they are really being portrayed as is a whole different thing. Regardless of where they are really from they are being portrayed as Joisy girlz and boyz... Which are immature young adults but that is the target audience.
The whole country sees the name Jersey Shore and sees them acting like kids usually act but they equate the attitudes and behavior as being the norm for people from Jersey.
However, the reality is that if anyone really believes what they see on TV, then they need to shut it off and get a life.
I myself have never watched an episode. Couldn't get past the commercials but more power to them and I hope they enjoy the money and fame while it lasts.
In HypocriCNN's Delusion Of What Qualifies For Real News, I Refuse To Stoop To The Level Of Commenting On This Brain Dead Topic. However Though I'm No Fan In Any Way Of New Jersey Governor Christie, I Tend To Agree With Him.
The pictureof the "cast" says it all.
Let me invite the show to Miami, happy to be an infamous symbol of endless partying, lascivious get-togethers, and barroom brawls.
They need all the money they can get.
The show is a total embarrassment for America, nothing but sluts and drunks, your folks must be so proud.
