President Obama will deliver a major education reform speech Thursday morning.

Washington (CNN) - President Obama will deliver a major education reform speech at the National Urban League's 100th Anniversary Convention in Washington Thursday morning.

The president will discuss how his signature Race to the Top program and other initiatives are driving education reform across the country and focusing the nation on the goal of preparing students for college and careers, a statement from White House said.

"Now, I know some argue that during a recession, we should focus solely on economic issues," Obama says in prepared remarks released by the White House ahead of the address. "But education is an economic issue - if not the economic issue of our time."

Judging by the illogic, ill-temper, and illiteracy I have seen in some of the reader responses to these columns, we not only need education reform, we need it to be retroactive.

Hogwash! This reform is just like it has always been. Many mandates and NO funding!
This year my school district had to let 130 teachers go and close two schools. The pressure was so heated that our Board president a unpaid volunteer suffer a massive fatal heart attack during a board meeting!
How about taking about 20% of the Military budget and transferring it to Education and fund these reforms for a change? Let the Military have bake sales, sell cookie dough, candy bars and magazines to get their funding.

You know it will favor the teacher's union. They give him too much money for him to do otherwise.

He skipped the Boy Scouts 100th anniversary to play footsie with Joy Behar and is now going before a very adoring audience to lie to the American people some more. What a president the dope smokers put in office.

There is no way for a president to only focus one issue at a time. Being president means in part dealing with everything at once. In many cases, education can lead to better economic conditions. Could you imagine if everyone focused on education? We could actually have an informed electorate again. We'd not have a need for talking heads and pundits that are spewing hate and incorrect information.

Another speech-same result. A president out of touch. His pet project isn't too well like by the NEA and some have called for Sec. of Education Arne Duncan to leave. 4.3 billion dollars that came out of the American Recovery Act of 2009,much just wasted.

Just like the STIMULUS BILL this education plan is a failure. Why doesn't Obama tell us how many qualified? Like the help to keep American from foreclosures, 4 out of ten qualify the rest lost their homes. Rhethoric doesn't do the job, show the Amrican people positve results, not documented failures!

Dream on, Obama. All these fantasy programs of yours will soon be ripped out of the government's budget lineup as we sort out what to tax the American people for.

In the 90's, the government was telling the public how hot IT was and that was the place to be. I went to school so I could get out of the factory and start a career in IT, which I did. Unfortunately, at the same time the government was telling us how hot IT was, they were allowing companies to ship millions of IT jobs overseas. Now, IT is a very difficult market to work in because of all the cheap competition.

What good is education if the government is going to allow jobs to go overseas??? What parent in their right mind would fork out thousands of dollars to send a kid to collage, only to have the opportunities go away to other countries? I know people who spent thousands of dollars for collage in the hopes to work in IT – they now deliver pizzas.

I think that the government needs to do something about job loss to overseas before they do anything with education. What good is the education if there is nothing there when school is over?? - HELLO???

Unfortunately, our government is owned by companies, not the American people. They have no intention of stopping the flow of jobs being lost to other countries. If they did, they would have done something.

Now they talk about education. For what – learning how to deliver pizzas? America is such a sad joke!

Obama has screwed up enough. Just say NO to any more "reforms", which is his word, for getting his way........pretty dictatorial in my view.
