Washington (CNN) – The heated debate over a controversial Arizona immigration law which partially took affect this week could push Hispanic voters away from a Republican party looking for their support, according to the findings of a new national poll.
A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Friday indicates that on the question of which party cares more about people like you, Hispanic respondents pick the Democrats over the Republicans by 27 points. And when asked which party agrees with you on the issues that matter most to you, Democrats hold a 25 point advantage among Hispanics.
But Republicans hold a 44-38 percent advantage among Hispanics on which party can do a better job improving the economy.
"Most Hispanics also say that the government is doing too much that should be left to businesses and individuals," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.
Although economic conditions are the No. 1 issue to all racial groups, the number of Hispanics who pick the economy is only 34 percent. By contrast, 49 percent of whites and 47 percent of blacks name the economy as the country's top problem.
"Some of that difference between Hispanics and other groups is due to a higher number of Hispanics who name immigration (11 percent) as the top problem, but education (10 percent) and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq (13 percent) also draw attention from Hispanics.
The poll's release comes one day after parts of the Arizona immigration law took effect, while a federal judge blocked several of its most controversial aspects. The preliminary injunction, issued Wednesday, means that police are prevented for the time being from questioning people's immigration status if there is reason to believe they are in the country illegally.
CNN poll numbers released on Tuesday also show that Hispanics remain in the Democratic camp, but there are some indications that the GOP may make headway among them. Hispanics favor the Democratic candidate for Congress in their district over the GOP candidate by a 54 to 39 percent margin.
"That's an indication that Democrats will again capture the Hispanic vote in November. But they probably won't win this key demographic group with the kind of margin they got in 2006, when the Democrats racked up a 69 to 30 percent advantage that helped the party regain control of Congress," says Holland.
According to the survey, 57 percent of Hispanics approve of how President Barack Obama is handling his job overall. Obama gets low marks from Hispanics on the economy and illegal immigration, but they heartily approve of his track record on health care.
What does the future hold for Hispanic politicians?
Fifty-six percent of all Americans say there is an excellent or good chance that a Hispanic will be elected president in the next 20 years. That sounds good, but it lags far behind the number who forecast that a woman will be elected president (81 percent), and also is less than the number who say that a black other than Barack Obama (65 percent) will be elected in that time.
The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted July 16-21, with 1,018 adult Americans questioned by telephone, including a special sample of 308 black and 303 Hispanic respondents. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

I just watched the video on Mr Weine (D) and I couldn't agree more.
The big problem with this in when the other Party was in charge we had ths same thing going on with the (D). I think this is two of our big problem with our politicians. 1 – Each party wants the credit and 2- they all want to elected. No one is really interested in doing the right think for a Country we all live in. We really need term limits.
If the hispanics say the government is being too involved and should leave this to business they are asserting what the Republicans have been saying all along. Does this mean they'll be voting overwhelming Republican in November?
i am so sick and tired of illegals coming to this country ,then demanding equal rights for them. i served in thee military(PROUDLY) and when i see them fly their flag over ours and upside down, they will never get me to believe they deserve equal treatment..please, we are talking about illegals, not just hispanics, DO IT THE LEGAL WAY OR STOP YOUR CRYING ABOUT DISCRIMINATION..PEROID!!!!!!!
@phoenix86: You are missing 90% of the facts. Garbage in, garbage out. Read the actual proposed bill.
@Orlando Patriot: Your first paragraph reads like an excerpt from bouncy-ball Limbaugh... Please back up your misstatements and lies with facts.
Your second paragraph asks a valid question however. Here is a clue: Hyman Minsky (google it). So, not only did the Right drive this great country into bankruptcy and deleted any middle class that ever existed,..... it also detroyed any leadership role the US has had for the foresseable future. Good luck..... I employ about 250 US citizens and I AM a legal immigrant. But people like you and your uneducated bla bla is what is destroying this country.... Well more for us and the Chinese to enjoy as we already own most of your debt. Pay up sucker.
@Jerry: Please explain how illegals can vote here? And please spare us with some other JFK assassination kind of Lincoln can vote again too plot.
@obama victim: HMMMM. The law of the land is evil, isn't it? Ever thought about the reason why there is a separation of State and Federal laws? There might be a reason.........
If a state now tries to enforce federal law where are the boundaries? When is the state superseeding the fderal law and vice versa? When does the FBI get involved or is this now all state matter? Does that mean I can grow / produce federally illegal drugs, but allowed to grow them on a state law basis because my state allows me to do so..... That would lead to the good ole days of the 20's.... I would say tons of grey and not much black and white here.
So to all of you righty leaning folks..... WHY don't you come up with a solution and we can sit down and discuss or is this not an option anymore too? NO we can't!!!
Some of those comments written here are reall good reminders of pre-war Germany in the 1930s. Brown shirts attacking and antagonizing Jewish people that were questionable in the 'right' German mind. Nowadays it is the 'right' Americans that are trying to follow suit. The names changed 'Goebbels=Beck' , 'Goehring=Limbaugh' and 'Adolf=Wasilla' but the parallels are everywhere.
"Could push?" The Republican National Tea Party pushed hispanics away when they treated Sonya Sotomayer like crap last year! Who said the RNTP was looking for their support? How can they look for hispanic support when they (the RNPT) have treated them so badly?
Stacey, u seem to have selective memory. Have forgotten how the Democrats treated the Hispanic Bush nominated to the Federal Court of Appeals? Have u forgotten how Alberto Gonzales was treated by the Democrats simply b/c they were republicans. Oh I guess that is ok right.
U really are stupid Stacey. & a hypocrite!
The pole means crap..............I am very dissapointed in our federal goverment for not defending Arizona law. I suport Brewer and Arizona along witht about seventy percent of America and ninety percent of Texas. If anyone wants a good look at what imigration is doing to this country just subscribe to the "san antonio exspress news" and read the head lines everday. I hate to say it but it's like a breath of fresh air to see a white pearson committing a crime...about every six months or so. to anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about-San Antonio,Texas, is about a million people, more or less"mas or menus" about a hundred miles from the border of mexico and predominately mexican. check it out- san antonio exspress news.
I am waiting to see how mcnasty changes his mind once again when he realizes that first he was for illegals gaining legal status and now he isn't because it's the "right" thing to do in AZ.
Very mavericky of him and every other representative who didn't give a rat's behind while the shrub was in power but can now happily hate.
Republican (tea party) version of democracy, everybody's equal as long as they have blue eyes, blond hair, lilly white skin, and SEIG HEIL
Just came back from a visit to Hereford, AZ, about 10 miles north of the border, and one can't go 5 minutes without seeing a border patrol vehicle, I swear, it looks like an occupied country down there. So if Gov. Brewer and Sheriff Arpayo don't think that's enough – all I can say is wait until after the November elections, and the whole thing will be a moot point. It's all to get the votes, sadly.
This is a major debate that is generating more issues such as the looting and rioting and if this comes to Virginia from Arizona, this could create a political demise for the nation's capitol. The streets of Washington, D.C. are bad enough with the crime and economic problems. Many of the churches have soon considered president Obama their "Lord, Prophet and Savior" due to Obama's good charasmatic intellect and good family heritage. In retrospect, despite the political rhetoric, Obama is a good man for the job as Commander-In-Chief. Things have improved already since Obama took office. Our department believes that Obama will help us clean up crime and improve our economy too. Our department has good faith in Obama's good coalition for a better America. We Americans need to give Obama credit for his good work instead of ruminating over the other issues in which they happened under the Bush administration.
Anyone who took issue/concern with Sotomayer was justified because of some of her ruilings, not because of her being Hispanic. The fiasco with the New Haven CT firefighters showed her racial preduce and it's great that when it was appealed another judge was racially unbiased in the decision. As long as people keep looking for racial predudice (as you did in your comment) this race issue will never heal. Don't blame Republicans for being obstructionists when you're doing it yourself by promoting racial issues..
Miguel Estrada & Alberto Gonzales. Look up how wonderful the Democrats treated them. Dems only care about one thing. Your vote. If they don't have it, & u r a minority, watch them nail u to the wall.
Look up what they did to the aforementioned, Hispanic & Clarence Thomas.
Yeah Dems love Hispanic. LOL!!!
