CNN Poll: Arizona law's political impact

Washington (CNN) - The heated debate over a controversial Arizona immigration law which partially took affect this week could push Hispanic voters away from a Republican party looking for their support, according to the findings of a new national poll.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Friday indicates that on the question of which party cares more about people like you, Hispanic respondents pick the Democrats over the Republicans by 27 points. And when asked which party agrees with you on the issues that matter most to you, Democrats hold a 25 point advantage among Hispanics.

But Republicans hold a 44-38 percent advantage among Hispanics on which party can do a better job improving the economy.

"Most Hispanics also say that the government is doing too much that should be left to businesses and individuals," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

Although economic conditions are the No. 1 issue to all racial groups, the number of Hispanics who pick the economy is only 34 percent. By contrast, 49 percent of whites and 47 percent of blacks name the economy as the country's top problem.

"Some of that difference between Hispanics and other groups is due to a higher number of Hispanics who name immigration (11 percent) as the top problem, but education (10 percent) and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq (13 percent) also draw attention from Hispanics.

The poll's release comes one day after parts of the Arizona immigration law took effect, while a federal judge blocked several of its most controversial aspects. The preliminary injunction, issued Wednesday, means that police are prevented for the time being from questioning people's immigration status if there is reason to believe they are in the country illegally.

CNN poll numbers released on Tuesday also show that Hispanics remain in the Democratic camp, but there are some indications that the GOP may make headway among them. Hispanics favor the Democratic candidate for Congress in their district over the GOP candidate by a 54 to 39 percent margin.

"That's an indication that Democrats will again capture the Hispanic vote in November. But they probably won't win this key demographic group with the kind of margin they got in 2006, when the Democrats racked up a 69 to 30 percent advantage that helped the party regain control of Congress," says Holland.

According to the survey, 57 percent of Hispanics approve of how President Barack Obama is handling his job overall. Obama gets low marks from Hispanics on the economy and illegal immigration, but they heartily approve of his track record on health care.

What does the future hold for Hispanic politicians?

Fifty-six percent of all Americans say there is an excellent or good chance that a Hispanic will be elected president in the next 20 years. That sounds good, but it lags far behind the number who forecast that a woman will be elected president (81 percent), and also is less than the number who say that a black other than Barack Obama (65 percent) will be elected in that time.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted July 16-21, with 1,018 adult Americans questioned by telephone, including a special sample of 308 black and 303 Hispanic respondents. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

@ domincan momma blows obamma....Is Weiner the same type of Democrat (Lib) that wants to allow a mosque to be built at Ground Zero? America has woken up. Come November, Nappy and his ilk will feel the sting. So go cash another gub'ment check that I so dutifully pay for through taxation.

In Massachusetts a GOP congressman asked that the State and City officials use e-verify to confirm legal status before awarding benefits such as subsidized housing, food stamps, welfare, and unemployment benefits and only use it to confirm an individuals right to receive special aid. . e-Verify is free to use and take 30 seconds to confirm status. The Democratic controlled Legislature turned this amendment down ... and it has been shown that illegal immigrants have been getting speciall assistance (Obama's aunt lived in subsidized Boston Housing for 2 years after she had been asked to leave the country.

2 things need to be addressed regarding illegal immigration. First, the republicans need to drop the political football, knock it out of play, and get off their holy grail of innocence an admit to their own parties transgressions. Second, every American is partly to blame for our immigration troubles. How many times in your lifetime have you driven by a field of farmerworkers on your way to the grocery store to buy your choice of fresh fruits and vegetables and not bother to stop an help or apply for a job. Now, we can deport all the farmworkers and get out of our air conditioned environment an demand our $7.25 per hour and watch the price of fruits and vegetables skyrocket or we can continue to have our cake and eat it to while complaining about all the illegals. Which one is it going to be?

  4. To be or not to go...

Should the illegals be allowed to stay...? Is like asking should we reward crimials for their deeds...? Are we a nation bound by the rule of law.....? If.."Yes" ! why ask this question....It seem Washington is protecting the law-breakers.....and giving-up on our sovereingty...!

Sympathy ? It's just another word from liberals who think you aren't smart enough and can't fend for youself.

Most Americans, not just Hispanics know that jobs and wealth come via free enterprise and not the government gravy train.

With this democrat judge's decision, I figure the teaparty picked up another 10-20 million voters come Nov. They don't like what the democrat president, congress and judge did to those people in arizona and the other areas who put up with the crime and huge social program costs. This president and congress show again that they don't care about anything but their democrat party and reelection.

Can parties still win elections based on old white people? Not where I live – I would expect much of the same on a national scale.

The republicans have alienated most of the voting groups. They're left with old white people, and dimwits with IQ's in the single digits.

More skewing poll results to try to flavor the results in a fashion that fits your agenda. Anyone with any experience designing and conducting polls knows that how the questions are framed and when/where the poll is conducted can influence the results to show what you want them to show.

Bottom line, even Native American Indians have to play by the rules of our/their country/land then why don't Hispanics, Mexicans, etc... have to play by the rules????? Why are they an exception to the rule??????

Sorry, but it's been Republicans who did nothing on this for 8 years under Bush, McConnell, Boehner. Business wants the cheap labor, and business is the real Republican base.

    >"Pelosi, Reid and Obama would rather have Americans unemployed and illegal aliens voting than put Americans back to work."

That's false and you know it. Why do you violate the 9th commandment? So much for the so-called "moral majority."

Orlando Patriot, you clearly have no idea what the Israeli-Palestinian debate is about if you chose Israel's side. And that lawsuit? It's against federal laws detailing anti-discrimination because it encourages racial profiling.

I'm really excited for Arizona's economy to take a dive once they scare all Hispanic individuals into hiding. These people who "done took your jobs" also buy food at locally run grocery stores and restaurants, buy your clothing, and otherwise drive economic growth with their consumption.

Are you kidding? We do not have unlimited resources! We have no problem with legal immigrants so why don't you propose they leave and come back the proper way....problem solved. What part of illegal do you not understand? If I run a red light and get pulled over I must show my driver's license and insurance- now can I claim that I didn't obey the law b/c they are not enforcing immigration laws? You can't have it both ways!

There are 244 countries with folks wanting to work and live in the U.S., but you seem to focus, foster sympathy for only illegal mexican immigrants- please. The dems made this a racist issue because it serves their agenda of getting more votes. Giving the illegals amnesty is WRONG!! Why don't you support giving amnesty to everyone else waiting in the country from Japan, Europe, etc., they should receive the same treatment.
Please stop confusing the issues with the facts! Mexico doesn't want these people that come here, they encourage them to come here and use up all the social services. You can't blame the environment s to why Mexicans don't assimilate or ameliorate their situation – they are given more in terms of service for bi lingual schools, SSI, food stamps, charitable givings, healthcare....and many of them are draining our social security and medicare due to the fraudulent social security numbers they procure. Wake up Hector!
The public healthcare agencies turn a blind eye to the fraudulent social security numbers so they can continue to keep numbers up for federal and state funding.

They really need help to change their country so they can be help their own country thrive – why don't you move there and help them, show them the way?

Senator Schumer (D, NY) has a bill that would require all employers in the US to verify citizenship status for all employees. This would serve two purposes; it would reduce the employment of illegal aliens and INCREASE the employment of US citizens, and it would reduce the attractiveness of the US as a destination for illegal aliens.

This has been stalled by Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and the democratic leadership for over 2 years. Pelosi, Reid and Obama would rather have Americans unemployed and illegal aliens voting than put Americans back to work.

I live in the southeast and what the Hispanics want and what they get are two different things.

They do not show up at the polls (have never seen a Hispanic person at a voting poll) because most of them are illegal here.

Our congressional people say nothing about immigration reform because their biggest contributors are corporations who hire and benefit from Hispanics with cheap labor costs.

The people of my state want immigration laws enforced, but our congress wants cheap labor for the corporations who keep them in office with huge re-election contributions.

People, when are you going to recognize that since Bush41, Clinton, Bush44, and now Obama (and this goes back even further), the goal of thisGovernment is to develope a society of the rich and poor with no middle class. You can already see that they have learned the ways of cheating in taxes so that they have more money in their pocketbooks. This also shows that Obama saved Shore Bank in Illinois where he, along with Clintons, and others will fill their pocketbooks by billions of dollars. And, isn't it ironic that Chelsea is marrying into a financial crooked family> Unless you speak up and stop voting these idiots in, you are doomed.

I don't see all the fuss about the illegals. Jobs? The help the economy by purchasing goods. I'd like to see one legal U.S. citizen volunteer to do the work an illegal worker does.

Puh-leez, this is all a politically stirred up issue. We need to focus on the real issues and the real causes of our economic troubles. Corporate greed is out of control and our #1 problem.

I no longer trust anything CNN says. Especially that obnoxious Rick sanchez. Both parties are crooks and the only way to stop this nonsense is to vote in younger, fresher, devoted Americans and not allow the Senate or the House to retain their jobs for more than 2 terms.

As for Obama, I voted for him. I thought he would do good but he has turned this country into severe racial profiling. He and Michelle have a vendetta against white Americans and Americans in general. It saddens me to see our Politicians have no support for Americans but just their own filthy, crooked, pocketbooks.

I fully support the enforcement of US Imigration Laws and for the Gov of Arizona I say. I can't blame you for being fed up with the DC bums who continue to use this issue for political gains rather than solving what amounts to a relatively simple problem.

That said the driving forces behind this law are blatantly xenophobic and racist. I have lived within 100miles of the US-Mexico border my whole life and I have had as much or more experience with immigrants both legal and illegal as anyone in the country. They are not criminals, they are not bad people, they are not doing anything but trying to improve their lot in life. The hate (and it is hate) behind the anti immigrant movement is just like any other bigotry. The people of AZ may hide behind excuses of crime or reverse racism, economics whatever it may be, but these are the same excuses used by racists the world over to justify their actions. Today it is the law breaking illegal, in Germany it was the greedy jews, in Cambodia it was the intellectual elites and the greedy capitalists. . . . and on and on ad nauseum.

Hey Phoenix 86-There already is a law that requires employers to veify citzenship. A system call ed verify has been set up to assist in that. It isn't perfect but it is the law.

Dominican Mama-One of the main reasons that Republicans 0bject to Democrat Bills is that we have to pay for them. However, if you reread the article, you'll see that it is being withheld from a floor vore by UH! the Dems.
