Waters will choose House ethics trial, source says

Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters has chosen to face a House ethics trial rather than accept a finding of wrongdoing by the House ethics committee.
Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters has chosen to face a House ethics trial rather than accept a finding of wrongdoing by the House ethics committee.

Washington (CNN) - Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters of California has chosen to face a House ethics trial rather than accept a finding of wrongdoing by the House ethics committee, according to a source familiar with the process.

The ethics committee has been looking into whether Waters violated any House rules when she helped arrange a meeting in September 2008 between a bank she and her husband had ties to financially and Treasury Department officials.

The bank was seeking federal assistance. Waters is a senior member of the House Financial Services committee.

Waters met with the House ethics committee Wednesday evening, but she declined to comment to CNN when she left the meeting.

If Waters' trial goes forward, she would be undergoing the same sort of procedure begun just this week for another prominent House Democrat, Rep. Charles Rangel of New York.

  1. Former Republican, now an Independent

This is nothing compared to John McCain's wrongdoings with the Savings and Loan debacle. And this is nothing compared to George W. Bush's conflicts of interest with the oil industry and Dick Cheney's "no bid" contracts given to his former company, Halliburton. Yet, the American people accept the wrongdoings of these wealthy republicans and believe their stories that "what they did was good for America". What a bunch of Baloney!!

Waters is a Democrat, a woman, and she's black, thus, she's totally innocent! If you don't believe me, then you must be some sort of right wing racist!

Osama, roams free from incarceration. But please. please make sure that the people being investigated politically are jailed. And for the sake of the free world, make sure lindsey, pays her dues to society. Osama, has little to fear, apparently.

Democrat or Republican, when they break the rules they should face serious consequences. Since they've been granted the public's trust, when they betray us – get a rope!

Attention all liberal hacks! We need to create a diversion from out latest embarrasments by inacting the following standard diversions:

    1) Bring up George Bush...

    2) Inject the word Haliburton repeatedly into conversation, despite the fact you may have no idea what you're speaking of.

    3) Just say George Bush...

What is it that these Democrats do NOT UNDERSTAND about this BS in the middle of an election cycle?

While we still have the presumption of "Innocent until proven guilty" in America; I would doubt if that applies to most people in the political arena!

Given both that perception and reality one has to conclude that these folks simply do not care about the party, just their own monumental Ego’s…

  9. Same old Dems

Nancy: this will be the most ethical congress ever...

Barack: this will be the most transparent administration ever...

Barack: we will cut the deficit in half by the end of my first term...

All the Dems: "It's all George Bush's fault"...

If you like the fact that they give you freebies in exchange for your vote then just be honest (if you're capable) and say so. But don't try to tell us you have some kind of moral high ground after all of this.

  10. More Democratic Crooks

Waters and Rangel should be booted from congress for corruptions (not for their race, but their illegal self-enriching actions. It's amazing that it has taken CNN this long to report on the Waters story.

Why do democratic voters always make exceptions for the crooks in their own party.

Oh, and the Wiener rant still shows liberal hypocrisy. Democrats shut the republicans out an then when they are asked to vote and want time, he uses the opportunity to demonize them. What a liar and idiot.

WOW! Looks like Pelosi has a full time job draining the swamp of corrupt DemocRATS!! Notice how NONE of them has the decency to resign! Even when caught red handed they want to cling to power. All the more reson to throw them OUT and impose "term limits".

At least Rangel and Waters weren't trying to molest teenage boys and have it be willfully ignored by their party's leadership.

  16. "we're all about socializing..., er,...."

Waters is a crook, but the unions in LA/CA keep putting her brainless head back in the Congress.

Come one SoCal, vote for someone with a quarter of a brain. In other words, no: Waters, Waxman, Boxer, Pelosi,....

  17. How soon will the Dems play the racism card?

Every new story that is breaking involves Democrats of minority race. Wondering when the White House or any of the Democratic windbags (ie Pelosi) willstart crying foul. Can't wait 'til 2013.

Wait, I thought only the GOp had ties to the powerful banking industry. You mean that Dems are just as corrupt as the GOP? Can this be true?

Bunch of hypocrites, and that includes all people who post and say their side is any better, or any less corrupt, or cares for the average person any more than the other side.

I knew her when she was in the California Legislature back in the 80s. She couldn't spell ethics then, either. Just another incumbent who belongs in jail, not representing Americans.

Hmmm. Things that make you go hmmm. There are only "5 black people in congress". Why is it that suddenly only black folks are under scrutiny?? 435 members of the House and the only ones violating ethics are blacks??? Nothing about that stikes you as strange??? Be careful America. Something's rotten out there. "Beware the teachers of the law!"

  23. The TRUTH shall live again

    No party is immune but.....

This particular crop of long term DEMS and this administration is pushing the envelope on government ethics.

From a bevy of administration officials skipping taxes..
Sestak scandal....which seems to have disappeared from headlines
Shore Bank in chicago and its ties to the Administration
    Rangel
Dodd....who should be in jail and is at the center of the housing collapse
Acorns 300 plus sub brands which funnel money to DEM elections
Pelosi's husbands ties to Monsanto and the Food Energy Bill
    Reid's land deals
    Now Maxine Waters

Thats just the big ones I can name off the top of my head.

We need term limits so these sacred cows can stop infecting our Republic.

    Throw them all out!!!!!!!

Sister Waters I applaud you for your desire to fight. I also applaud Brother Rangel's decision not to turn and run. You both exemplify what our "president" lacks. You understand that strength, courage, and determination in the face of those who witch hunt and wish to do you harm can only be met with a stare in the eye and a smile on your face. We have the saddest example of a "black" man running this country now. I'm sure he will throw you under the bus like he did Sister Sherrod.

He has never spoken out agains any other race except African Americans. I hope the CBC stops supporting him. If not then at least stop defending him.

Let him be on his dayum own. He doesn't deserve your support and we don't deserve him or this democratic party.

She should be investigated to avoid the appearance of special treatment. The Charlie rangel matter is before us now and what we dont need is less transparency. Both of these people should be treated fairly and let the chips fall where they may.IF there is guilt, then let it be known and let them be treated as any other american. There should be distinction between them and any one else.
