U.S. drawdown in Iraq proceeding as planned, Obama says

Atlanta, Georgia (CNN) – The Obama administration's planned withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq is proceeding "as promised" and should lead to an end of America's combat mission there by the end of August, President Barack Obama said Monday.

Plans to reduce the number of U.S. troops in Iraq to 50,000 by the end of this month are on schedule, Obama told the national convention of Disabled American Veterans. At that point, the U.S. mission will shift to the training and support of Iraqi security forces.

But there is still danger for U.S. troops on the ground, the president warned.

"The hard truth is we have not seen the end of American sacrifice in Iraq," Obama said. "But make no mistake, our commitment in Iraq is changing - from a military effort led by our troops to a civilian effort led by our diplomats."

Well thor I guess your glass is half empty, like your head. There was TALK of drawdown before Obama, but no actual drawdown...in fact all the talk back then was of the "surge", and since then the talk on your side has been all about how successful the surge has been. But you are the first neo-nugget I've heard calling the SURGE a DRAWDOWN. I really hope you birth-baggers can get a grip on reality sometime soon.

End both wars, the sooner the better. I can understand strategic strikes where Al Queda may be gathering, which seems to be everywhere, not just Afghanistan and Pakistan; but the troops on the ground strategy is getting us nowhere but killed and wounded, and at a great price to our soldiers, civilian lives and financial ruin. We can't police every tyrannical regime in the world. People in these countries have got to take up arms themselves and fight back against tyranny. We can't afford it, too costly in human lives and $$$.

  3. Nothing Obama Does Can Please The Rabid Right

If Obama cured cancer, the Rethuglicans would scream about the loss of onocologists.
If Obama ended our dependence on foreign oil, the Rethuglicans would still be apologizing to BP, Dutch Shell and Saudia Arabia
If Obama created world peace, the Rethuglicans would scream about the loss of jobs in the defense industry.

Rethuglicans: poisoning American politics with blind hatred of our President.

He should NOT he take credit for two UNAUTHORIZED wars started under the last administration!!!!! They shoudl bring all the troops home around the globe and put them on border patrol (northern and southern). All those in office more than six years in Congress and Senate should stand up and claim "ownership"!!!!!!

I really hope this war helped Iraq. It would be nice to see less violence there, less attacks on their women and children. If we brought more peace to Iraq then it will be a successful war. I'm glad we can bring more peace to other nations.

You people who say that Obama had nothing to do with this need to remember that McCain was campaigning on adding to the troops in Iraq, not removing them. The fact that Obama was elected means that this drawdown is actually taking place, even if Bush initiated it.

Regardless – i AM glad to see that these honorable men and women will be coming home. It's just that it is 7 years past due, and no amount of political wrangling will bring back those who needlessly died there.

Why wait till August 31st when we never should have been there with our troops in the first place, 4,413 lives wasted!
