U.S. drawdown in Iraq proceeding as planned, Obama says

Atlanta, Georgia (CNN) – The Obama administration's planned withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq is proceeding "as promised" and should lead to an end of America's combat mission there by the end of August, President Barack Obama said Monday.

Plans to reduce the number of U.S. troops in Iraq to 50,000 by the end of this month are on schedule, Obama told the national convention of Disabled American Veterans. At that point, the U.S. mission will shift to the training and support of Iraqi security forces.

But there is still danger for U.S. troops on the ground, the president warned.

"The hard truth is we have not seen the end of American sacrifice in Iraq," Obama said. "But make no mistake, our commitment in Iraq is changing - from a military effort led by our troops to a civilian effort led by our diplomats."

Yes, please end these wars. We can not afford to spend our National Treasure and our young peoples lives, so Repbulicans can make their friends rich, while they funnel the young of our middle class into their war machine.
President Obama-we are no closer to catching Osama Bin Laden than we were when you promised to get him during the campaign. When will you realizie we need to stop this war as well.

  2. Randolph Carter, I'm no expert but...

Haven't we been training Iraqi security forces for 7 years or so? Crikey! They could've made it through medical school and become doctors in less time. Have a nice day!

Don not forget the troop pull out was finalized and implemented when Pres. Bush was in office. It was just scheduled to take place now. Obama had nothing to do with it. No credit here.

    The Iraq War =

-the war we were lied into
-the war that cost 4,000 + dead troops
-the war that took focus off of Afghanistan
    -the war that was unjustified
-the war that made war criminals out of the Bush Administration
-the war that made more terrorists
-the war that killed 100,000 + Iraqis

    Need I go on?

I would only be able to agree with Ms. Palin if President Obama quit his often difficult elected position and ran off on a lucrative speaking tour. I would then be able to say that anyone who did that ,and left their people in the lurch, not only lacked cojones but also a spine and moral compass as well.

Of course he's taking credit for the drawdown. He took credit for the success of the surge as well. What he did was spend 2 years running for election telling us how horrible George Bush was and now has spent almost 2 years in office continuing George Bush's policies (drawndown in Iraq, surge in Afghanistan, renewal of Patriot Act, etc.). Not much in the way of change, surprise, surprise.

God bless George W. Bush!! Do you realize if it wasn't for the foresight of George W. Bush and the success of his decisions then Obama would not have the luxury of reducing the number of troops while still proclaiming success? Do you realize if we had listened to the Democrats in 2006 (i.e. "the war is lost", "our troops are shooting women and children in the dead of night", "the surge won't work", etc.) we would have pulled out of IRAQ and IRAQ would have been known as a failure of the grandest proportions.

Boy you Democrats would have LOVED failing wouldn't you? However, the great George W. Bush had the right plan of attack and IRAQ turned out to be a great and complete success. That really bugs the hell out of you Democrats that George W. Bush was right and NOW we can claim a victory!! You Democrats don't know what it is like to be victorious do you? Well, now you know how it feels as Obama admits that not only are we victorious but it was due to the excellent leadership of George W. Bush. God bless George W. Bush who will go down in history as one of the GREATEST PRESIDENTS EVER!!

The fraudulent and crminal war crimes war started by Bush and Cheney will FINALLY be brought to an end.
Cheney thought he could steal Iraq's oil and all he and Bush did was kill American soldiers for nothing, kill innocent Iraqis for nothing, break international law on torture which put our soldiers at even more risk. help uncharged and mostly innocent people in Gitmo for years for no reason than their race and religion, and ran up our national deficit to levels we have never seen before.

Iraq was an impeachable crime but no Republican had the integrity or patriotism or care for our laws to prosecute Bush and Cheney.

Thank goodness we have our intelligent President Obama who knows war and bullying is not the answer to foreign diplomacy. The world hated us and no longer trusted us because of Bush and Cheney. We were in grave danger of more 9/11s while they were in office.

Iraq was a total failure and accomplished NOTHING. It was a total lie and no Republican will accept THEY were the ones who destroyed our economy with this war debt.

If you seek the truth – you will find Republicans are at the root of all America's current problems. President Obama is working hard to fix all their messes and doing an oustanding job. Republicans are destroyers and Democrats are builders.

Republicans are do-nothing whiners while Democrats are leaders who deliver solutions for the working class of America.

Democrats will finish restoring America and bring back jobs and prosperity for the middle class. If you care about the future of our nation, stand strong for the Democrats in November.

    The GOP's Barbie speaks again from her butt;
with the same waste that comes from it. She needs to speak on things she knows. This is the same idiot that can't tell you were she gets her information or knowledge from.

Anytime she decides she can comment on some things that she doesn't know; she make the same stupid statements like in 2008.

Palin and Steele are what's wrong with the GOP since they can't or will not accept equal responsibility for the immigration debate and non activity before President Obama came in. These are the same GOP followers who are part of the problem by hiring the illegal employees for 20% to 30% less to work for them.

Maybe they need to finally take so responsibility for some of the mess left behind by them over the years!!!

Finally, the stupid war that the Repukelicans started and that the Republicans allowed to run up the deficits way beyond where anyone can see is almost at an end, even though 'mission accomplished' happened in May 2003. Regardless of what Sarah Palin thinks – not that any smart person cares – Obama has the cajones to stop the stupid Iraq war that the Repukelicans started and couldn't figure out how to stop.

Thank you President Obama for doing this. Congratulations. When the last US military personnel leaves Iraq, it will truly be 'mission accomplished'.

And when exactly did President Obama take the credit for all of this? The man simply said that we're on schedule for getting our troops out of a country we had no business being in to begin with.

And as for Afghanistan, which is where we should have been in the first place, you have to remember that President Bush started that war and never really did anything there for EIGHT YEARS. So sure, that's Obama's war now, and he's now doing what Bush should have done a decade ago.

While bush may have signed off on it Obama is the one doing it. Bush said alot about the war while in office, most of it lies. I am not going to pat him on the back for signing up for a plan to get out of a war he lied about to get us in.

The Administration needs to understand that the American people want us out of Iraq COMPLETELY ... we do't want thiis to be another east German / West German , North Korea / South Korea situation where these locations become quasi-permanent US military bases.

This is the type of CHANGE we want to see. If he does what all other Presidents have done FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, etc. I'll be disappointed. However, the right won't be able to criticize him for it.

The last words from the poster ... David ... illustrate what is wrong with Republicans and this county.

He said, and I quote "No credit here" [meaning for President Obama].

Stop plotting this man's demise ... stop worrying that he's going to get credit for something .... stop saying "NO" to everything he supports just because you believe that if you can claim he didn't acheive anything, he can't get re-elected.

We are all noticing the behavior of the "Davids" out there.

Yes, it is good of the bloggers to give President Bush credit for the strategy that ultimately lead to ending the war in Iraq. ....but then President Obama equally deserves credit for fallowing though and bringing it to a close.

Also, let us not forget that it was President Bush that entered into a unnecessary war in Iraq under a false pretext. President Bush blatantly lied to the American people about the purpose of going to Iraq. It may be that he truly expected to find some proof of an out-dated and infective attempt to create weapons of mass destruction, but no informed person really believes that President Bush truly believed that a strike was imminent or that the attack on New York had any connection at all with Iraq. President Bush proved to be corrupt beyond all imagination and he alone is responsible for the unnecessary deaths and injuries to our service members and Iraqis as well as the increase in hatred to the US and he perpetuated violence between Christians and Muslims.

And let us NEVER forget that these same people that put President Bush into power are now slamming the current President unfairly. The Republicans are corrupt of morality, especially the ones that wrap themselves in the flag and pretend to speak for GOD.

And since Obamas name is in a headline, alot of you will find negative comments to spew.

    HOW ABOUT....
Thank GOD a percentage of our troops will finally be able to come home and be with their families, in a safer environment. Not discounting the ones that will most likely be transitioned to Afgan war (the one war we shouldve singularly focused on...)

But no.. instead commenters blame Obama for trying to take credit? And want to give credit to Bush for implementing this plan, and for what? To some how prove Obama is evil and Bush want? Hell.. you folks and your selective memories...

Bush+Cheney = UNNECESSARY LOSS OF LIFE.
