Angle wants journalists 'to ask the questions we want to answer'

Republican Nevada Senate candidate Sharron Angle told Fox News that she prefers to talk to journalists who 'ask the questions we want to answer'.
Republican Nevada Senate candidate Sharron Angle told Fox News that she prefers to talk to journalists who 'ask the questions we want to answer'.

Washington (CNN) - It's what all political candidates probably want but few will actually admit: if they could control the press, they would. But Sharron Angle is openly saying that she prefers talking to journalists that "ask the questions we want to answer," prompting one conservative publication to ask, "Did she just say that out loud?"

The criticism is in response to comments that the Republican Nevada Senate candidate made in an interview that aired on Sunday. Angle hopes to oust the most powerful Democrat in the Senate, Majority Leader Harry Reid, in an increasingly brutal race. A fresh poll shows Reid with a slim lead.

On Fox News, Angle was asked about her defensive posture towards the press. She recently explained why she routinely refuses to do mainstream media interviews.

"We needed to have the press be our friend," Angle said in the Sunday interview that, Angle's campaign said, was done shortly after the June 8 Nevada GOP primary.

The interviewer then asked if Angle was being "naïve."

As part of her response, Angle said: "We wanted them [the press] to ask the questions we want to answer. So that they report the news the way we want it to be reported."

Angle went on to say she would like to use the media to raise campaign funds.

The conservative National Review's website put up a post with a headline blaring, "Did She Just Say That Out Loud?"

Others have questioned why a political candidate, even one as outspoken as Angle, would seem to suggest she'd prefer to manipulate the media.

Jon Ralston, well known Nevada political journalist, called Angle's comments "pretty astounding."

"All politicians want to answer the questions they want to answer," he told CNN. But Ralston said, "It is, at best, naïve."

Angle's campaign explained the comments to CNN.

"Nevada is in a state of despair and voters need a candidate that is going to focus on the issues that effect everyday lives like sky-rocketing unemployment and reckless government spending. Sharron was simply stating that we need to focus on solutions for those key issues, not 'gotcha' moments like Harry Reid wants to distract people with," Communications Director Jarrod Agen said in a statement.

Reid's campaign obviously disagrees.

"Sharron Angle is clearly starting to see that her positions on killing Social Security, eliminating the Education Department, and bringing nuclear waste to Nevada are quickly being rejected by Nevada voters," Reid campaign spokesman Jon Summer said in a statement.

Angle's campaign denies it wants to "kill" Social Security. The candidate has publicly said that she advocates a transition to personalized accounts as a way to salvage a broken Social Security system. As for the Education Department, the campaign has previously called it "unconstitutional" and blasted its "one-size-fits-all policy and programs that fit no one."

America is not Burger King Sharon. You CAN'T have it your way. You don;t stand a chance of winning if you're afraid to speak to the press. Why do you think the lead you once held has all of a sudden vanished.

She is clearly from the Michele Bachman/Sarah Palin deraged women dingbats part of the GOP. Bring 'em on. They give a public face to the disaster that the Republican'ts have become.

That is what happens when mindless people vote to nominate (elect) someone who has no qualifications for public office. All they do is mouth the mindless drivel that people give them to say. Ideologically pure people have no place in public office. That approach files in the face of our democratic system. Heaven forbid that we actually listen instead of shouting slogans.

I am not a huge fan of Harry Reid, but Angle should not be elected coroner – let alone US Senator

Yeah, that's right. Don't you believe in freedom of press? What are you, a commie? Seriously Sharron, you can't have it both ways. If you are going to run for office, WE THE PEOPLE want to hear all of your answers, no matter what news organization questions/covers your appearances. THAT IS THE AMERICAN WAY! Any other way would be the Communist way.

Yes, dear, there are many who want to only answer the questions we want to answer. But the rest of us are adults and realize we can not pick and choose what we wish to answer, but must face the real questions of life every day and have real answers.

If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen or the blacksmith shop. Plus, as SP says, it takes cajones to be a politician. Angle is an amateur at best.

She is right. For example, it is a known fact that those congressmen were never called the N word by the great Tea Party Americans, yet the lib media will ask a lie based question like that to someone like Angle.

The American people, well the ones who are not George Soros programmed Obama-bots, want the media to ask the questions that affect our lives. How these politicians are going to thwart the socialist in chief from carrying out his George Soros plans of destruction of our great nation, how they can reduce spending and take on the corruption of the Democrats with thier code pink seiu and other anti-Americans ETC.

This mini-bagger [R] is in a race with Palin to the intellectual bottom. These moronic women are self-fulfilling [R] prophesies when it comes to the good-ol' boy regressive preconceptions about women that were prevalent in the 1950s. No wonder these neo-women are so popular amongst the vacuous human fodder that feeds today's [R] machine. This is America at her worst.

All she is saying is what the Dems have been doing. Dems like to show up on MSNBC, The View, NBC, ABC, CBS, and others. That way they get friendly softballs tossed at them. Yet they avoid Fox and the tough questions That's all she's saying! She just had the guts to say it it aloud, while the Dems don't!

We don't want to face people other than ourselves is what she is saying. She seems to think that only the people like her matter and the other residents of the state don't. This smacks of arrogance and the idea that she doesn't care about the rest of the state. There is no way that she fully understands the rest of the state if she refuses to answer questions from reporters of the state. CBN and Fox don't live in Nevada and rarely have reporters there. How will talking to your ideological base help you in a general election?

Not only is her comment regarding the wish to control the media "astounding" ... it's very disturbing. Add that to the increasing pile of evidence that she is not only unfit for representative service – but dangerous.

Doesn't everyone want this. What her comments seem to offer is that the media should only report what we want them to report and nothing more. If this sounds vaguely familiar, you can visit China, North Korea, or Iran to see how that's working out.

yep, thats why the press here never tells a politician that he/she is a liar. They do not want to hear the truth.
Angele only will answer questions that she submitted before to Fox-News.
Awsome. This is another example of Free Republican Press.
In the former Soviet Union, this was called PRAVDA (TRUTH)

    Thats what Republicans want

It's not about "gotcha questions" you fool. Anyone that votes for this disaster needs their heads examined.

If she wins then what – I only want to work on things i like, or I only vote when it concerns my pet projects, or if their is not money in it for me I'm not doing it.

What a disaster. Way to go republicans, find the worst of the worst and then nominate them for higher office.

Why can't she just take a question, and then revert it back to a list of 10 memorized talking points? Sarah Palin does it. The journalists don't ask any follow up questions anymore, so it works.
