Magazine: Bristol Palin, Levi Johnston engagement called off ... again

Bristol Palin has ended her engagement to Levi Johnston, People Magazine reported.

(CNN) - Bristol Palin has called off her engagement to Levi Johnston, People Magazine reported Tuesday.

"It's over. I broke up with him," Bristol Palin told People Magazine. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told the magazine her daughter has learned a valuable lesson: "to trust but verify."

Last month, Bristol and Johnston became reengaged without first informing Sarah Palin.

At the time, the Palin family issued a statement that stopped short of a full-throated endorsement.

And in her statement to People Magazine published Tuesday, Sarah Palin made her wishes for Bristol known.

"I wish for Bristol to be able to move forward in life with her same forgiving, gracious, optimistic spirit, but from henceforth she'll know to trust but verify. Bristol is strong, she is independent, and she knows what is right for her son," the former vice presidential candidate said.

And as for the reasons, Bristol told People that a trip to Hollywood was the final straw.

"The final straw was him flying to Hollywood for what he told me was to see some hunting show but come to find out it was that music video mocking my family," she said. "He's just obsessed with the limelight and I got played."

In what the magazine calls an emotional interview, Bristol said "There's been no remorse," and that she has only seen Levi once in the past three weeks.

Their teenage relationship fell under an intense public spotlight after Sen. John McCain picked Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate in August 2008. The couple broke off their first engagement about two months after their son's birth in December 2008.

After they broke up, Johnston posed in Playgirl Magazine and said on "The Tyra Banks Show" that they had been allowed to live together, a charge the Palin camp denied.

Johnston irked Sarah Palin last fall by claiming that she referred to her infant son Trig, who has Down syndrome, as "retarded." According to Us Weekly, she fired back, telling reporters that anyone who posed for Playgirl would "say and do anything for even more attention." Later, during an interview with Oprah Winfrey, she called his "aspiring porn" career "heartbreaking."

During a nasty custody battle last year, Johnston asked that the case be conducted in public to protect him from Sarah Palin, whom he said was "powerful, politically ambitious and has a reputation for being extremely vindictive."

Bristol Palin said in the custody hearing that Johnston wanted a public case so he could "continue to make a spectacle of this custody dispute for his own self-promotion."

Bristol Palin noted in the court case that Johnston's mother, Sherry Johnston, pleaded guilty to a felony drug charge this year.

Bristol Palin asked that the paternal grandmother be barred from having any unsupervised visitation with Tripp. Her petition said she "may re-offend, keep medications around the house which could be accessible to the baby, have illegal drug users come to the house (or she could take the baby in her car during a drug sale)."

Johnston's response said his mother's "chronic pain condition is currently being managed in coordination with the Department of Corrections."

On July 7, Johnston publicly apologized to the Palin family in a statement to People Magazine, saying some of his comments about the family were not totally true.

"Last year, after Bristol and I broke up, I was unhappy and a little angry. Unfortunately, against my better judgment, I publicly said things about the Palins that were not completely true," Johnston told People. "I have already privately apologized to Todd and Sarah. Since my statements were public, I owe it to the Palins to publicly apologize."

CNN- can you explain why this is newsworthy? I do not see how or why this is listed in your news. This is tabloid fodder!

No big surprise there! Why is she news and the death of one of our beloved big band leaders, Mitch Miller who just died at 99, not noted on CNN????? If you don't publish everytime Palin does something, then she'll feel that no one cares and she would be correct!

I think its pretty hypocritical how the conservatives have been treating Sarah Palin and her Family. If Obama had a daughter who was like this, or if Biden went to 5 different colleges to get a degree, everything would have been completely different.

What a scheming old witch that woman is. Megalomaniac of grand proportions. As if she was going to let Bristol marry Levi. I hope Palin runs for president for the humor value, and I hope that one day Bristol tells her mother where to go.

I'm sure that there are plenty on the right that wishes either this type of press would go away or BETTER YET that this was either the Obama or Clinton family so Rush and his kind could have a FIELD DAY with it.
But alas it is the "holier than thou" Palin family, the one that her fans claim is "just like us" so it's okay for this type of stuff to go on. Had this been Obama's family being this dysfunctional he would only NOT have won the election but would have beem condemn by every religious right and GOP right winger in sight.

Maybe if these people would have relationships and conversations and oh, I don't know ... education? instead of photo shoots and "statements," things might be going a little bit better.

It doesn't matter! The only thing that matters is that only Sarah Palin can save this country. We need her badly and I know she will win in 2012. I can't wait until the election results come in November 5th, 2012. America will wake up to a saved country. Just like Ronald Reagan in 1980.

Be patient America........help is on the way.

Just how much drama can this girl create? Is she sitting down with a flower plucking off the petals, "I'll marry him, I won't marry him..."? Also, how this classifies as news is beyond me. With all the craziness in her own family, Palin thinks she's the best choice for President?

Does it bother anyone else that we know way too much about this crappy (and hopefully soon "failed") politician's family?

Why don't we get articles about which black celebrity David Dukes' kids aren't dating?

CNN–WHY IS THIS NEWS? No one cares about these fools. Isn't there any other news or event you could cover. Why do you keep wasting your time and energy covering the Palins?

I'm sorry for whatever issues Bristol may be going through but I absolutely HATE the phrase, "Trust but Verify". Isn't that an oxymoron? The very definition of trust is to not have to verify. If you feel that you must verify then you don't actually trust them. You may be moderately confident that you believe them but you do not trust them.

And I know that Sarah Palin loves Reagan and that he coined that phrase, but seriously, with a journalism background she should really know how to use words properly.

Every word, every incident, points to a number of issues. All of this does prove a point over and over again. The palin clan has become the poster children of the trailer trash culture in America. No one really cares except momma's run for the presidency is actually MAKING her money, it's why she quit as gov of alaska, there's no money in it. Her whole family fits the antithesis of any kind of 'family values' except low ones. The ex governor knows her looks are fading, she has an imbecelic looking hubby who, thank God almight stays to the background, and a lil slutty daughter with a boyfriend/exboyfriend/fiance/ex fiance....etc who will now try and make a buck making fun of the Palinses. Funny how everyone wants a 'reality show' the more far fetched the better. The real shame is the palinses and company won't do a suicide/cult pact reality show where they all kill each other and themselves. The history of this country would thank them for centuries if they did and made it stick.

I'm a leftie, and to all you right wingers saying "Ohh I know you all just love this stuff, don't you?" I'm here to say, no we don't. We realize that imperfect people get themselves screwed up all the time. We're a nation of screwups. However, one screwup shouldn't ruin your whole life. You should not be defined by it and the government should help with things like school lunches, etc. Bristol has a family to help her but if her family had instead disowned her, like many do, she and her child would be screwed without the social safety net.

No, we don't like that people make horrible choices, are jerks, and windup on the public dole, but it happens. To think these things don't happen is to be blind and cruel to those who need the most help.

"From (sic) henceforth...?" Really, Mrs. Palin? Better get yourself a dictionary for those two-syllable adverbs, or just stick to the one syllable ones.

Please, please let the girl make it final this time! He is a "hunk" alright, but he is a lying, cheating hunk who has already spread himself around. I hope she figures out that she is much better. And yes, she will be even MUCH better if she can escape the Palin Compound. And she can if only she will, and then she could start a new generation of truly honest, wholesome people.

hmmmmm... how did I feel that this re-engagement was not to last even for a week or so. Looks like Bristol has seen Levi only for once in three weeks and that sanctifies my thoughts. I feel sorry for Bristol.

Bristol needs to get away from her mother's influence. Is she actually the daughter of Todd? I am not sure – just curious. Looks like whenever there is an issue with Bristol, Sarah works as a hound dog and Todd remains calm and quiet.

What is going on? Come on, media? Are you awake???
