Washington (CNN) - Solicitor General Elena Kagan was easily confirmed Thursday as the next associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, completing the 50-year-old native New Yorker's climb to the peak of the American legal profession.

The 63-37 vote was more than enough to blunt any possibility of a last-minute Republican delay or filibuster. Opposition during three days of Senate floor debate was relatively subdued.

Kagan is set to begin a lifetime position as the nation's 112th justice. Administration officials anticipate she will sworn into office Saturday, when she takes the traditional constitutional and judicial oaths. She will then assume her court duties immediately.

CNN Radio Political Notebook:

Her brisk confirmation was a political victory for President Barack Obama - who placed Justice Sonia Sotomayor on the high court last year - and for Senate Democrats.

It's been obvious for quite some time that Obama is in over his head as President. He has broken many of his campaign promises and doesn't have a clue on what to do with the economy, immigration or the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. He has lost the courage to be the leader this country so desperately needs.

    Congrats, Kagan!

You have succeeded in creating yet another round of whining, crying, and desperately disturbed neocons and teabagnuts.

    Will they ever grow up?

Another activist judge. The five Republicans who voted 'yes' should be voted out of office. She has no experience on the bench. It's clear she is a far left liberal. Some of her past decisions and opinions are just plain scary. We can get rid of Obama in 2012, but she's there for life to push his liberal agenda.

Another vote for killing babies when women are irresponsible. Another vote against the military that protects us. Another activist judge on the court. I wonder how this softball player will vote on gay issues...I'm sure she'll be objective....

  7. Randolph Carter, I'm no expert but...

Oh no! Not another "activist judge." Maybe she'll overturn the popular vote in the next presidential election or some other elitist socialist nonsense. Have a nice day!

P.S. Like there aren't enough conservatives on the court already, randroids?

Awesome! How does it feel to have our socialist anti-American agenda rammed down your throats once again, loser teabaggers? Have a nice day!

Can we please have some term limits on suprem court judges, we only give our President 2 terms.

These people stay there so long they can no longer mumble a sentence.

This woman Kagan looks very GAY, sorry to say it but just look.

I am very sure she will rule in favor of Obummer when it comes time to vote on Arizona Immigration Bill.

The woman gives me the creeps.

Very important appointment for my gay brothers and sisters.

Congratulations Supreme Court Justice Kagan. May you have the clarity of thought, compassion, and wisdom to execute the duties of your lifetime position.

Mr. President thank you for bringing about a much needed change to the highest court in the land. The SC is now more inclusive and representatiive of the population as a whole.

Change and Hope work for me.

You see how much Obama hates Jews, he puts one on the highest court in the land. Terrorists rejoice at his plan to have a Jewish judge on the Supreme Court, that was their plan all along.

Republicans: still waiting for the sky to fall.

Her experience is NOT the issue.

The fact that she's a flaming socialist liberal AND the fact that she's worn it on her sleeve her entire life is the issue.

She doesn't believe that we have inalienable rights. She thinks that our natural rights are derived from our govt. The Constitution doesn't even give us our rights, it merely protects them.

I agree! Excellent point. Two women appointed to the Supreme Court in a row, and the Lilly Ledbetter Act for equal pay.

Our President IS looking out for the rights of women in this country, and evening the playing field.

    Duly noted.
