(CNN) – Rep. Charlie Rangel, D-New York, said on the House floor Tuesday that he has no intention of resigning from Congress.
"If it is the judgment of the people here that I should resign," then the ethics committee should expedite its consideration of the charges against him, he said.
But "I am not going away. I am here."
Rangel is facing 13 counts of ethics violations, including a failure to pay taxes and properly report income.
The man is a typical liberal, "it's only wrong if somebody else does it". He won't resign, because he's convinced he is above the law and immune to criticism or conviction.
Mr. Rangel is the poster boy of what is wrong with politics and the way things are run in DC. Until we have term limits and set amount s of money for reelection, abuses like this will be repeated by all political parties. It seems that death is the onl;y way to get a corrupt politicians ousted.
Thats the way! Show 'em that corruption CAN pay!! Is his district in as much denial as Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee's(D Houston)? Charlie "Hustle" is corrupt where SJL is just stupid but it seems they can get re-elected not matter what!! Why do you think that is?
Yes, The ethics committee should get busy and expedite its consideration of the charges. Time to show the American people that "cleaning house" was not just a slogan but a reality.
If the people of Harlem don't vote him out, kick him out.
He's a bad example – at 80, he needs to retire and let someone with real ideas take over.
he wont resign.........then he ll look good in jailhouse garb.............
Of course he won't! I heard him in a rambling speech before congress a little while ago complaining that he didn't know when the Ethics committee was going to meet, blahblahblah! When will those dems quit playing the blame game and take responsibility for their own actions. Go away, Charlie–you are worthless!
Rangle needs to serve some hard time behind bars for his crimes against the taxpayers. He can have Waters as a cellmate.
He certainly has the right to fight and should do so if feels like it.
I also think people will decide on the next election and resigning is the cowardly way out, which seem to be the Presidents preference,.
It is amazing that this president is always on the side of opportunity and not principal. It is absolutely amazing to me.
I believe in a fair hearing, but when things get this far in the Congress, it's pretty clear that there's fire behind that smoke. If the same is true of Waters, then they both should go. If they've broken laws, they should be tried and go to jail. And I'm a progressive.
Now, I'd like to hear some conservatives call strongly for war crimes charges against members of the Bush regime. Otherwise, they are not sincere about wanting a clean government and should shut up when it comes to commenting on those who have erred ethically.
What happened to the old "law and order" Republicans? Is that concept truly dead, since the neo-cons?
This cheater and liar should be foced to resign or even prosectuted with some of the things he has done.
GET RID OF HIM!!!!!!!!!
While we are at it: VOTE THEM ALL OUT!
Rangle benefited from his position, it is an ethical issue but it's not like he was passing out tobacco company $10,000 checks on the congress floor like Boehner did, but Rangle is still in violation.
My girlfriend worked for the bank that benefited from Maxine Waters influence at that time, though it was more hr husband who benefited, there is still an ethical violation, even if she was trying to help out minority banks, ends do not justify the means,
now how come we don't hear a word about 5 Republican congressmen who have CRIMINAL investigations going on, which are way more serious than anything a couple of Democrats did???
October surprise anyone???
If the average citizen did what Rangel did they would be in jail.
He should go away, for 3 to 5 years.
Congressman Rangel isn't any more corrupt than the rest of the Democrats in Nancy Pelosi's Swamp. We saw that when they all voted to pass the AIG Bonus guarantees in the corrupt stimulous bill, and the Cornhusker Kickback and Louisiana Purchase in the corrupt healthcare bill! Why should he be singled out?
Rangel should be in jail. He should be forced to pay all monies due, with interest, just like any other American citizen found quilty of the same crimes.
spin the truth
blame someone else
surprised he hasn't blamed this on Bush
Rangel is the poster child for the democratic party – arrogant and defiant. No laws, rules, ethics, or civility is required to be a Democrat in power -and stay in power. If this is what Obama's team and pelosi's team have to offer us, I want no part of it. Rotten to the core - everyone on the left is lining their pockets.
If Rangel cheated on his taxes, as it appears he did, he can use the Secretry Geithner Defense - I used Turbo Tax and did not know what I was doing
