South Carolina Democratic Senate nominee Alvin Greene has been indicted.

(Updated at 6:01 p.m. ET)

(CNN) - U.S. Senate nominee Alvin Greene, a political unknown who became the surprise winner of the South Carolina Democratic primary, was indicted Friday by a grand jury on obscenity charges.

Greene was indicted on one felony count of "disseminating, procuring or promoting obscenity," according to the Richland County clerk of courts.

He was also indicted on a misdemeanor count of "communicating an obscene message to another person without consent."

Greene told CNN Senior Political Editor Mark Preston that his lawyer "is dealing" with the indictments.

Update:

Following the announcement of Greene's indictment, South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Carol Fowler released a statement asking Greene to resign.

"In June, I asked Mr. Greene to withdraw his candidacy because of the charges against him. Following today's indictments, I repeat that request," Fowler said.

"It will be impossible for Mr. Greene to address his legal issues and run a statewide campaign. The indictment renews concerns that Mr. Greene cannot represent the values of the Democratic Party or South Carolina voters."

Had a feeling they would come up with some reason to dump him. Guess they found something they could use to disqualify him.

At least he's only accused of trafficking in pornography. That puts him head and shoulders above 90% of the Democrats currently in office.

If South Carolina was stupid enough to select this moron in the primaries, they should do the rest of the nation a favor and secede!

of a totally FREE ELECTION, but NOW those crafty villians
have set him up to take the fall in an indictment.

This just goes to show you that most voters do not research the "person" they are voting for. They vote for a "party", and for the last 3 elections, we have seen what a huge MESS that line of thinking has made for this country.

and still there will be some some really stupid people here that will vote for him. Either they will do it because he's black or they will do it because they do not see any harm in his being a pervert. shame.

I know nobody wants this guy but I hope this isn't a ginning up of an incident where in college he showed a co-ed some porn. That was merely the world's stupidest pick-up line.

If the guy can't be defeated without dirty tricks, the people deserve him. And people who do such things make him into a sympathetic figure.

sees to be the best that SC has to offer.
thought it can't get any worse than DeMint but he has even DeMint beaten.
Just shows the mentality and knowledge of the people in SC.
If you vote, you should be able to read and write.
Maybe give the right to vote with a HighSchool Diploma/GED.
Upps, then Palins daughter couldn't vote nor her on/off fiancee.
    Naw, that wouldn't be bad.
    Good idea I think

Just another liberal getting caught. Wait, at least he did not direct money towards banks or others of his family like waters and rangel. Oops my bad, he did not have the money for his own attorney and got a public defender but he had the $10,000 to file for his run for the senate.

This is what you get when you cross party lines to elect a person that you think is the weakest in the opposing party. I wish that people would realize that this tactic is only hurting our country in the long run.

    Peace :-)

For the love of God, couldn't they find something else to get him for? That sort of charge is simply pathetic these days, used only when they're desperate to charge the person with something but can't come up with a better charge.

Not saying he's a great guy and upstanding citizen, but it's starting to look pretty pathetic down there.

Unless there is already a CONVICTION, Senate nominee Greene is still on the ballot. Let him defend himself in the court of law.

That's a shocker. It's usually the conservative republicans that are caught up in this kind of thing.

Of course he was. Both Rethglican and Demobrats of SC never wnated this guy anywhere near a political office representing that state. He is an unknown outsider that broke the "rules". Proof positive of how a democratic society can actually work if not manipulated and corrupt. Enough of Career Politicians in Washington! If I could vote for this guy I would. Is what he "allegedly" did any worse than what the other SC politicians have done and continue to do? Not to mention all the other criminals in Congress. God forbid yet another Black Man in America earn a place in a power seat...

This, more than any story I have seen, illustrates the sad sad state of politics in America. How much more detached and uninformed can the voters be, than to elect this person as a candidate?...We are a nation of idiots.
