South Carolina Democratic Senate nominee Alvin Greene has been indicted.

(Updated at 6:01 p.m. ET)

(CNN) - U.S. Senate nominee Alvin Greene, a political unknown who became the surprise winner of the South Carolina Democratic primary, was indicted Friday by a grand jury on obscenity charges.

Greene was indicted on one felony count of "disseminating, procuring or promoting obscenity," according to the Richland County clerk of courts.

He was also indicted on a misdemeanor count of "communicating an obscene message to another person without consent."

Greene told CNN Senior Political Editor Mark Preston that his lawyer "is dealing" with the indictments.

Update:

Following the announcement of Greene's indictment, South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Carol Fowler released a statement asking Greene to resign.

"In June, I asked Mr. Greene to withdraw his candidacy because of the charges against him. Following today's indictments, I repeat that request," Fowler said.

"It will be impossible for Mr. Greene to address his legal issues and run a statewide campaign. The indictment renews concerns that Mr. Greene cannot represent the values of the Democratic Party or South Carolina voters."

Got to hand it to the Democrats... when they really don't like you, they'll go to any length to pursecute you. In this instance the Dem's have demonstrated more effective organization by targetting this individual for political terminiation than all the best they could muster when trying to topple Georgie Porgie!

Certainly a sad day for both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Wow, that's pretty flimsy. They are really going after this guy, to have such trumped up charges. Are they blowing the dust off the old lawbooks trying to see if he happened to carry his groceries in his left hand on a Sunday before noon while wearing a white suit?

I am going to guess that the Democratic Party in South Caroline had something to do with this. It was just too embarrassing for those clowns to have this fellow running for office. Seems South Carolina is the only state [possibly] more insane and corrupt than Massachusetts.

Finally! CNN runs an honest headline! CNN is getting better! With more and more effort to become TRULY NEUTRAL, CNN will become my favorite news network. It will take more effort on their part, but when they finally open up to views that are not strictly left leaning, I will make them my #1. It may be a dream, but I would love to see an article about the unproven aspects of the following leftist dogmas: 1) global warming 2) Darwinian origin of life 3) socialism and communism. Run these articles and CNN will then be truly POLITICALLY NEUTRAL!!!

Maybe now the truth will come out on this guy. SC is the place where they do the dirtiest politics in the country, even topping TX. This guy came out of nowhere to win (?) the Democratic primary, and that win is entirely suspect.

Now, he's indicted. Will he spill the story of just how he got into the primary and how an unknown and totally unqualified person "won" it? There are Repugnants tied up in this story somewhere.

Nice going, South Carolina...how could anyone in their right mind pick Greene as their Senate candidate? Was his name first on the ballot?

I do not want Palin to run. At first she seemed level headed and knowleagable, but as time went on I found that she just does not know what she is talking about. She is all over the place. I could not imagine her running the country. I truly believe it would be worse than Obama.
