(CNN) - At a Tea Party rally Sunday on the U.S.-Mexico border in support of tough immigration laws, Arizona Senate candidate J.D. Hayworth slammed his opponent, Arizona Sen. John McCain, and turned McCain's words back on the veteran senator.
On a ranch in Hereford, Arizona, and with the border fence visible several hundred yards behind him, Hayworth also praised Arizona's new immigration law that was signed by the state's governor, who has spent the last two days campaigning with McCain.
Pulling a word from a McCain letter on immigration which first surfaced in April, Hayworth said it was time to "regularize the status of John McCain," and remove him from office.
"He may try to change the terminology," Hayworth added. "Indeed, John McCain was sending out letters earlier this spring offering the boilerplate denial, saying 'Well you know I oppose amnesty.' And then in the next paragraph saying 'we must grant concessions to these people and regularize their status.' That's the new term [for amnesty]."
Hayworth said he had "a new way to apply that term."
"To put an end to amnesty once and for all, to secure our borders, to end any of this misguided talk about open borders, it is time to 'regularize' the status of John McCain. Send him back here to be a citizen among us," Hayworth said to applause.
Hayworth has long criticized McCain's letter. For their part, McCain's campaign told local media in July that "regularize" means "to follow the law."
On Saturday, McCain wrapped up a two-day, six-stop statewide tour with Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, whose signing of state bill 1070 earned her wide praise from conservatives and established her persona as a strong anti-amnesty voice in the immigration debate.
Arizona will hold its primary elections on August 24.
Yay! You tell 'em, JD.
This is how Hayworth fulfills his destiny: by unseating McCain and giving Arizona a chance to redeem itself by electing a moderate Democrat to the Senate in November.
Don't let the rest of the country down, Arizona. We know you are better than your Governor and Senior Senator.
If you have not yet figured it out, these people in my state of Arizona are LUNATICS. Flip flop McCain, the man without principles or Hayworth, the man who is certifiably CRAZY. The choices we have.
Mr. Hayworth is one very scary man!!!
No matter how stupid the guy attacking him is I can't let McCain off the hook because he is the one who unleashed Sarah Palin upon the world. He has sown the wind and is reaping the whirlwind.
Most of the people who support this law has no idea that the federal government has exclusive authority on immigration. While the states can assist the federal government in enforcing federal immigration laws, the states cannot tell the federal government how to enforce the laws. When the states write their own immigration laws because they claim the federal government is not enforcing federal immigration laws, the states are telling the federal government how to enforce its laws, which the states cannot do. For this reason alone the Arizona immigration law is unconstitutional. Besides, the claim that the federal government is not enforcing federal immigration laws is simply bogus. In 2009 the United States Immigration and Customs Service deported 387,790 illegal immigrants, the highest yearly total ever.
I don't trust anything a Politician has to say or the tea party. I am done with lip service. I am an Independent and am sick of the BS. Campaigns mean nothing anymore. Once in done and the people who elected them are screwed once again.
Sen McCain has done NOTHING about the problem of ILLEGAL immigration, that is until he jumped on the ban wagon just recently, in fact he supported amnesty. You sure can tell its an election year, he waited until the majority of law abiding citizens agreed with 1070, then jumped off the fence. He is a has been and we NEED to vote him out, gone, adios!
No matter what you think of McCain, Hayworth as per his previous chance after being elected, has to be considered worse. That's my opinion for what it's worth.
Give Amnesty to illegal... never going to happen.
McCain turned his back on Americans and supported Illegals, he can't be trusted.
Mexico is under attack from Drug Cartels and all the Mexican run for America. Mexico, your losing your Country? The people of Mexico need to fight for their Country. Cowards.
Just watch how America fights the attack from Illegals, then apply the same methods and take back your own Country.
Gotta love the "Republispins" for their creative use of language! Gotta love it.
everybody seems to want to get Sarah Palin's take on everything, I would really be interested to see what her take on this would be. She's a Tea Party favorite YET she backs John McCain who is loathed by the Tea Party. She has little problem saying negative things about President Obama or the DNC, so why not come on out and defend Sen McCain? I'm taking the bet that she stays silent on this one.
hayworth makes sarah look tolerant–
not that heyworth is that great but why would any one still support McCain, hes just a sell out
Hayworth is desperate. McCain is probably suffering from Alzheimer's Disease, but Hayworth, like most of the Tea Partiers. is nuts.
One has to wonder how many Mexicans worked hard days for little money on this candidate's ranch – before it became fashionable for Arizona's wealthy white people to become storm-troopers. I'd like to look him in the eye and ask him "who really dug those post holes for that barbed wire fence?".
