(CNN) – After months of negative, hard-hitting ads aimed at Tea Party-backed opponent and former Arizona Rep. J.D. Hayworth, Sen. John McCain's campaign has released a new, more positive spot called 'Vital.'
The minute-long ad makes no mention of Hayworth, but focuses instead on McCain's character and major issues such as border security and the economy.
"I can't think of a time in my life when we had bigger more vital issues at stake than today." McCain says, "The rebuilding of our economy, the security of our nation, our border, and the safety of every citizen in Arizona."
"We will get America back on course, we will return Arizona to safety and prosperity," McCain also says in the commercial.
The ad was released hours after Hayworth attended a Tea Party rally at the U.S./Mexico border, in support of tougher immigration laws.
Speaking at the rally, Hayworth attacked McCain's record on immigration. "It is time to 'regularize' the status of John McCain," said Hayworth. "Send him back here to be a citizen among us."
The Arizona Republican Senate primary is scheduled for August 24th. Recent polling suggests McCain is leading by a wide margin.
This McCain clown has no shame, he was part of the designers of the recent amnesty bills, now he flips. How someone would vote for him is beyond me...............
Arizona is in rough shape if all they have a choice is between these two hacks.I hate those lesser of two evils options. This is whats wrong with our political system. No wonder people don't vote.
how can there be anything positive about McCain when he chose sarah pathetic for his VP?
Are these guys the best the Arizona GOP can muster? Sad! Why are all these"issues" that were ignored by the prvious administration now suddenly urgent?
For some reason, McCain reminds me of the Weasel from the old Foghorn Leghorn cartoon.
Yes John... And you and your party have done nothing but stifle every legitimate chance at meaningful debate over these vital issues. Talk is cheap.... And Repub talk is really, really, really cheap. Thanks for nothin'.
Here's a hint for Arizonans: There's another option. You don't have to vote for McSame or Mr. Certifiable. There'll be a Democrat on the ballot in November. How could he possibly be any worse than these freaks?
For crying out loud, he's been in the senate for how many years now. We"ll never get term limits for these guys unless we vote them out after they serve 8 years instead of letting them make a career out of it for their own benefit and not the country's.
@Barry....some war hero. He crashed more planes than he shot down and squealed like a pig when he was interrogated by the Viet Cong. If that's your definition of a war hero, maybe you better go back and do some research instead of believing what his campaign says.
McCain speaks out of both sides of his mouth, depending on the audience. It was only a couple yrs. ago he and T. Kennedy wrote an amnesty bill. Now he wants the border closed and then what McCain, amnesty or deport all the illegals? He cleverly omitted that little issue.
Character? Just another example of "Old Man McCain" telling the sheeple what they want to hear.
Go away, grandpa, and don't let the door hit your walker on the way out.
There are always big issues each election right? Every election, "this time is more important".
Blah, blah, blah
I bet 2012 will be an even BIGGER more important time.
In Arizona, the rates of violent crime, drug trafficing and kidnapping are all down since 2007, yet John McCain continues to claim those crime rates are rising. This mobilizes the painfully stupid biggots which comprise the Tea Party. Good grief.
Barry, this man McCain is by far no class act as you put it. He also has tarnished his reputation as an american hero. He is a shell of the man he used to be.
To put it mildly, he is part of the problem and wishes no part of the solution.
What about the last 30+ years?! Hmmmm I guess they were not as important. Hey McCain the fundamentals of the border are SECURE!! LOL
He's just a tired old man!
Exactly, we just have to elect conservatives to undo the damage obama and the liberals have done to this country since taking office 17 months ago. I do not see Senator McCain apoligizing or bowing to our enemies like nobummer.
Fear-mongering is alive and kicking. Big-bad John McFlip-Flopper hunting down illegals all by himself looking macho at the border.
