Giuliani says Islamic center should not move forward

Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani says a planned Islamic community center near Ground Zero should not move forward.

Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani says a planned Islamic community center near Ground Zero should not move forward.

(CNN) - Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani said Thursday that if the developer of a proposed Islamic community center and mosque near Ground Zero was genuinely concerned with healing religious wounds, "he [would] not go forward with this project."

"This project is not healing," Giuliani, the mayor of New York during the 9/11 attacks, told Matt Lauer on NBC's Today Show. "This project is divisive, this project is creating tremendous pain to people who have already paid the ultimate sacrifice."

Giuliani said the developer, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, appears to "recognize that there are two ways to interpret the Koran: the better way, which is the peaceful way; or the warrior way, which is the way in which you get into trouble with jihad."

"The reality is that, right now, if you are a healer you do not go forward with this project. If you're a warrior, you do," Giuliani added.

The imam has so far declined to talk with New York Gov. David Paterson about finding a less controversial location to build the facility.

I think the pig farmers and the pork butchers of America should step forward. Open pork butcher shops right next door to a mosque. Place a pig farm in extremely close proximity to a mosque. Do they not have rights to run their business? Do they not have have the freedom to enjoy making a living wherever they want?

Three wives, all still living, carried on with wife # 3 in the NY City Executive Mansion, while wife # 2 AND his children lived in the same home, supported a criminal, who later served time (big time), to head U. S. Homeland Security: This guy is giving we simple mortals advice about where to place a place of worship?

How far is far enough away? Should they dismantle the Mosque that is four blocks away from ground zero and predates the original construction of the World Trade Center?

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

Either you support our Constitution or you don't. Everyone has a right to their opinion and to voice it, but to prevent this project going forward would violate everything we have stood for as a nation for over 200 years. This country was not founded on narrowmindedness or the fear of others – and it should never be so guided.

"This project is not healing...This project is divisive, this project is creating tremendous pain to people who have already paid the ultimate sacrifice." where have we seen this tactic before?

    1. Some reasonable, rational, altruistic fool says a naughty word like "bipartisanship," "healing" or "compromise."

    2. Batsh-t crazy conservative nutjob...let's call him (or her in this case, i.e., Geller) "General Nutjob"...gets bright idea that opposing and obstructing whatever it is that the naughty word referenced will produce political gain for the GOP/conservatives/Teatards...and who cares if it makes no sense or goes against our core principles as a society?

    3. Said nutjob rallies the Tinfoil Hat Brigade with demogoguery...generating fear, anger, resentment, righteous indignation and a healthy dose of religosity, borderline racism and xenophobia, eventually producing a plethora of soggy diapered screaming idiots.

    4. General Nutjob and the Tinfoil Hat Brigade hijack the public discourse with batsh-t crazy conservative talking points and blather, and "news" media happily provides echo chamber without a single critical thought in its proverbial bobblehead.

    5. General Nutjob earns his fourth star by blaming the altruistic fool who originally uttered the naughty word "bipartisanship," "healing," compromise" etc. for the public furor and sensationalized controversy because, after all, it was clearly his suggestion that those words apply to whatever it is he's talking about that caused the uproar, not the concerted efforts of the GOP/conservative political machine to produce said uproar.

    6. Profit.

Has anyone bothered to educate themselves on the Muslim religion instead of going off half cocked and just reacting to "sound bites" to get their information?

Would it suprise you to know that the Muslim faith is second only to Christianity.

Would it suprise you to know that there are 2 billion christians and 1.5 billion Moslums in the world?

Should we condemn all Muslims for a small extremest groups action?

Should we condemn all of Iraq for the atrocities of Sadam

Should we condemn all Germans for the actions of Hitler?

Should we condemn all White people for the actions of a few White hate groups?

Are you starting to get a message here?

My only message is to educate and inform yourselves before reacting to a the rantings of someone just because the are holding a "hot mike" and have the gift of gab!!!

Would Guiliani say this if it were a Cathedral?

The Mosque is NOT being built at Ground Zero! That is nothing but political garbage. This entire debate is simply due to the fact that we have an election coming up. These people were holding services in the same area years before 9/11, after 9/11 and now. It is blocks away!

Stop using fear and hatred as election tools! It's disgusting and it hurts innocent people. Please, stop allowing your fears to be exploited for money and votes.

  10. What the?

Explain this to me like I was a fifth grader. Radical Islamic terrorist destroy the World Trade Center in honor of Jihad and Allah. 10 years later it's ok to build an Islamic Mosque in the same area where Islamic terrorists created havoc and mayhem. WHAT AM I MISSING HERE???

Does anyone else find this man to be as disgusting as I do? He had a couple of remarkable weeks after 9/11, but other than that, he's a pretty hidious human being.

The problem with Islam & muslims is that give them an inch they will ask for a yard. There is freedom of everything but then you also have to understand responsibility towards the majority. One must change with changing times which the majority who follow this faith refuse to do so. I have never seen or heard any moderate or forward thinking muslim or mullah coming forward and denouncing what taliban is doing. This war against Taliban can be won if the moderate and forward thinking mullahs start propogating that what the extremists R doing is not correct and there is no jihad and every one should live and let live. No one is doing that so no mosques or centre leaning towards that faith be built near ground zero. In fact no where else as they become rcruting grounds for brain washed terrorists. Their schools should be monitered and they should teach as per NA school syllabus and nothing else.

Rudy is right. The imam should listen to him. President Obama should also listen to Rudy Giuliani, instead of making equivocal and senseless statements. The mosque does not belong close to ground zero. The muslim believers may built the mosque somewhere else. Showing respect and consideration for others goes a long way.

This MORON needs to focus on his shop-lifting daughter's issues and STOP sticking his BIG nose where it doesn't belong. New Yorkers kicked his butt to the curb because of his stupidity and incompetency.

GO sit under a rock with Sarah Palin somewhere Rudy-Tudy and shut the hell up.

The former Mayor should butt out of this one as he shows in his comments the same ignorance he exhibited during his short-lived and failing presidential candidacy. He and other Islamophobists like him should get on with the program and move on. The country has and will continue to move forward. There is no going back to pre-1968 civil rights era and they continue to seek whether on this issue, immigration, etc.

Oh, boy! Two of the meanest, most dishonest right wing scum are in the news today. And, they are both advocating selective reading of the constitution. Guiliani – freedom of religion only applies if I approve of your religion, and Palin – free hate speech is fine, but if you protest the speech, you are trampling the constitution.

What twisted minds. Is there a special practice of medicine to correct spinal injuries from how fast the right wing nuts show you their two faces?

This stupid man should be worried about why his 20 year old daughter was arrested for stealing in a store... and as all the wing nuts he ignores the constitution and I bet that he knows that from the 3000 that were killed in ground zero, only 55% werem americans, the others were from all over the planet and 65 people were muslins. What a jerk !!!

Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani has the common sense Obama lacks, obviously.
It's just a darn shame that McCain had to win the Republican Party nomination instead- Rudy would have won in 2008.

I brought up a point earlier this week that brought no reaction so I will do it again. Where were all of our self-righteous citizens after the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995? I'm guessing that Timothy McVeigh was raised as a Christian in upstate New York. If I am correct, I don't remember anyone wanting to stop churches from being built in Oklahoma after the bombing of the Murrah building in downtown OKC. Just wondering?!
