Only about one-third of Americans can correctly identify President Obama’s religion, according to a new poll.

(CNN) - A substantial and growing chunk of the country believes that President Obama, a self-described Christian, is Muslim, while only about a third of Americans are able to correctly identify his religion, according to a survey released Thursday.

Nearly one in five Americans believe Obama is a Muslim, up from around one in 10 Americans who said he was Muslim last year, according to the survey, conducted by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life.

While most of those who think Obama is Muslim are Republicans, the number of independents who believe he is Muslim has expanded significantly, from 10 percent last year to 18 percent now.

The number of Americans who express uncertainly about the president's religion, meanwhile, is much larger and has also grown, including among Obama's political base. For instance, fewer than half of Democrats and African-Americans now say that Obama is Christian.

A hell of a lot of war and other hostilities, domestic and foreign were waged by Richard Nixon, a Quaker.

And why do we care about his religious philosophy? Seems to me a whole lot of yuck happens in the name of God...no matter which one folks appear to follow.

He claims to be Christian but only shows up at muslim events. Who is to say what is the correct religion for the comic in chief. He goes to no Christian events, so he must not be Christian in faith.

I don't believe Obama is a Muslim, but one has to wonder given his actions throughout his life. Without doing any research, here's what I know:

He was raised as a Muslim, going to a private school for Muslims. His father was Muslim as were several relatives, though I don't recall which. He participated in Muslim rituals in Keyna, wearing the appropriate garb. He bowed to the Saudi king (as president), he directed NASA to act as an outreach program for Muslims, and he supports the Muslim mosque near ground zero. Based on his actions, It's not a stretch to convince anyone that he could be Muslim.

Wow! If the man says he's a Christian, he's a Christian. I challenge all those who don't believe that he is a Christian, to "prove" that they really are whatever they claim to be. Pretty hard to do. There are a lot of people out there who claim to be Christians, and even go to church regularly, who don't act very "Christian" at all.

But everyone knows George Dubya Bush, who stole the presidency, lied us into a war, shredded the constitution, and supported torture, is a 'christian.' not surprised if you think he's a christian, you don't recognize a real one when you see a real one like Obama. all that aside, it shouldn't matter what a president's religion is when he's governing a secular country, which the United States IS! just because Obama doesn't make a big show of his religion doesn't mean it isn't important to him. this and other polls just show how stupid and gullible so many Americans are, and how uninformed. another tragic consequence of the existence of Cluster Fox 'News!'
