(CNN) - A substantial and growing chunk of the country believes that President Obama, a self-described Christian, is Muslim, while only about a third of Americans are able to correctly identify his religion, according to a survey released Thursday.
Nearly one in five Americans believe Obama is a Muslim, up from around one in 10 Americans who said he was Muslim last year, according to the survey, conducted by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life.
While most of those who think Obama is Muslim are Republicans, the number of independents who believe he is Muslim has expanded significantly, from 10 percent last year to 18 percent now.
The number of Americans who express uncertainly about the president's religion, meanwhile, is much larger and has also grown, including among Obama's political base. For instance, fewer than half of Democrats and African-Americans now say that Obama is Christian.

I find it interesting that the majority of people who incorrectly think he is a Muslim are in the same group as those who think he is doing a bad job.
Can we just categorize this group as generally ignorant and having absolutely no clue as to what is going on?

Obummie is more of a muslim than a christian. He was raised a muslim and then sat in the church of a radical so called pastor for 20 years than in no way that can be described as a christian.
Cheney sure wasn't he was an athetist. I do not remember and can not find one..not one...poll you corporate owned CNN posted about him not being a Christian. And boy he wasn't. With the things he did. Why in Hades is it such a big thing to try to stir up a mess over something like this. Oh I get it the corporate masters who have got tea bags under their thumb, cause they are so dumb to believe them, working against their best interest to support them, they think by getting their media to publish trash like this they can influence intelligent Americans. "Unable to correctly identify his religion?"
There is nothing in the president's behavior to suggest he is a Christian and increasing evidence to suggest he is indeed a Muslim (a claim that I dismissed until recently). At the very least, Mr. Obama has switched from a radical liberal form of Christianity (remember Jeremiah Wright?) to practical agnosticism.
There seems to be a problem with lack of education in the US.

This statistics clearly demonstrats the ignorance of far too many Americans.
What bloody difference does it make which set of silly superstitions he subscribes to? That he subscribes to any of them is enough to make me doubt his grasp on reality.
Why does it matter what his religion is? In my opinion religion is a waste of emotion, only used for devisive purposes. If a person follows the laws of the country, why going to a specific building or bowing one's head in the name of prayer, makes one any better than another.

1 in 5 think Obama is Muslim, that means 1 in 5 are morons, GOP, Birthers, or Tea Party hooligans. Take you pick, I am sick of them ALL. I would suggest leaving them take control the country, that would be like a cross-breed between Chaney and Palin together. Would that not be the greatest moment for this country? For the first time our president's religion is cast in doubt because the president has upset the natural order of things. How can a black man win the presidency? So everything is done to discredit him. His citizenship is questioned, his faith doubted and he is portrayed too weak on national security and the economy. People jump to conclusions without looking at facts. Even if Obama was a muslim what has his religous faith got to do with being a good president? It is Republicans that are trying to deceive the American people about a president that is bent on righting the wrongs of our society and because Republicans know that the American people are seeing the good works of Obama, they are casting doubts on his religous faith.

I hope this does not mean he will completely lose his mind like so many other so-called Christians. I am old enough to remember when calling someone a Christian was a high compliment, not a badge of hate, exclusion, narrow-mindedness, and ignorance.
I still know a few old-fashioned Christians. I honor and respect them. I learn alot from them. They do seem, however, to spend alot of their time shaking their heads over what has happened to their community.
You can take the man or a woman out of religion, but you can't take religion out of a man or a woman. If Obama is half Muslim, he is still Muslim, or half christian , he is still christian. I heard a lot a statement such, I am a Muslim but I didn't practice it, that's a wash out as a statement, usually it means I am a Muslim but I am afraid to admitted. Obama is Muslim from his father side, and Christian from his mother side. Next time around we need transparency from our elected officials before they make it to the White House not after.
I trust our President and I do believe he is a Christian. President Obama certainly follows the teachings of Christ, feed the hungry, care for the sick, help the homeless, how many of the right wing born again nut cases Praise the Lord and Hallelujah on Sunday and to hell with the poor, hungry and sick the rest of the week. Hmmm Sounds like the Good ole' USA. fundamentalist extremism, a danger to Democracy and true Christianity
