During his time in Martha's Vineyard last year, the president enjoyed some golfing.

(CNN) - President Barack Obama and his family begin a week-long vacation in Martha's Vineyard on Friday - the president's second time on the island off the coast of Massachusetts.

In 2009, Obama spent time there golfing and hanging out with family and friends.

"It's a beautiful part of the country. It has really nice beaches and the folks are really great," Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton told reporters Thursday. "The food is terrific. And it's some place that the president went before he was president and likes to go back because it's a comfortable place where he can rest and recharge the batteries a little bit."

Some have questioned why the Obamas have chosen to go to an elite holiday spot in Massachusetts instead of the Gulf Coast, as Obama had encouraged Americans to help bolster tourism there. The first family - minus eldest daughter Malia - did visit Panama City, Florida, August 14-15, however. There, the Obamas swam in the Gulf of Mexico and played miniature golf, and the president met with business leaders about the BP oil spill and its effect on the region.

Burton said this vacation, which will last 10 days, will also include some work.

  6. We voted for this?

Obama supporters keep saying that this man needs all the vacations that he's taking.... really? It appears that he vacations/golfs every other week.

This guy is pretending to be president. He doesn't listen to a vast majority of Americans, passing such unsustainable policies as Obamacare, the 3 'stimulus' packages, bailing out private companies/banks and trying to pass a manufacturing-killing cap and trade.

It would almost be better for him to vacation and leave the free market alone... he's hurting America.

Good for him, and good for the country. Much better to be on vacation than cramming ill-advised, socialistic legislation down the throats of an unwilling public. November can't come soon enough!

I voted for Obama and worked hard for him. If senior citizens had gotten a little raise, maybe we could have least taken a days vacation. I think the senior citizens are the forgotten people.

Come on people, do think for one moment President Obama, will be vacationing?

When your the most powerful person in the world, your working 25 hours in a 24 hour day.

Give the man some slack. I'll bet he is seriously lucky if he gets an hour of uniterrupted time with his family.

Our President and the First Family have a right to go on vacation wherever they want. Would any of you complaining about his choice of vacation spots want someone to tell YOU where you should vacation? What is happening to our freedoms in this Country? The man can't go to the bathroom without getting criticized. Give him a break, will you? Why isn't this Country celebrating the last of our combat troops leaving Iraq instead of harping on where our President is going for vacation. Come on people, stop the nonsense and grow up! Enough of listening to the Fake Noise Channel. Let's realize all the good this President has done, instead of listening to the hate and venom constantly spewed by the malcontents out there.

Stories like this are very misleading. This not like an employee who goes on a regular vacation. Presidents NEVER go in true vacations. They are presidents 24 hours a day and a crises can require their immediate attention at any time. They still receive a national security briefing every day...even when they are on a so-called vacation. They may not be in the office at the White House, but that doesn't matter. Their duties remain the same. They may forego ceremonial duties during that time, but that's about it.

Happy Vacation Mr. Prez. You have had more time off than I have in your first18 months and I have worked at my job for 14 years. How does one get a job like yours. I have responsibility for world wide data center support and while I don't have the responsibility of war ... my job is on the line each and every day. I work 65 hours a week and have for the last 14 years.... You got yours in 18 months....

Did George W. Bush spend his vacation in Louisiana after Katrina, no he spent it in the luxury of his Crawford, Texas ranch as he did all during his presidency. Don't let your short term memory out smart you.

Seems like everytime we turn on the TV or go on line the president is going on a vacation, what about the millions of unemployed, how many vacations have they got to go on since being downsized? I to was downsized. If the president spent as much time on the ecenomy as he does deciding where his next vacation will be spent, the country might not have so much anger toward him. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that.

How many vacations have I taken this year - 10! Why? Because I carefully plan my leave; and I have a strong work ethic - just like President Obama. Therefore, if you want to take more than one vacation a year - GET TO WORK!!!

Let me get this straight... It was okay for Bush to vacation, but not so for Obama. For those of you making the most (negative) noise about the Obamas' vacation, get over it! I suggest that getting lives of your own might relieve you of some of your anger.

I'm sure Martha's Vineyard is not hard up for tourist dollars. It's probably one of the few areas that hasn't suffered economic hardship. 2 days in the gulf versus 10 in Martha's vineyard a token yester. I don't think people would be as critical if they had spent a longer period in the gulf. The gulf could really use the extra money and publicity that would come with the first family taking a "real vacation" there.

Seems to me that the Hope and Change thingy works for him. Hoping for some time off and a change of scenery. What a rip and on my tax dollars as well.
