Judge stops federal funding of embryonic stem cell research

(Updated at 5:25 p.m.)

Washington (CNN) - A U.S. district judge granted a preliminary injunction Monday to stop federal funding of embryonic stem cell research that he said destroys embryos, ruling it went against the will of Congress.

The ruling by Judge Royce C. Lamberth was a blow to the Obama administration, which last year issued guidelines to allow federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.

Lamberth's ruling said all embryonic stem cell research involves destroying embryos, which violates the Dickey-Wicker Amendment included in federal spending bills.

"The Dickey-Wicker Amendment unambiguously prohibits the use of federal funds for all research in which a human embryo is destroyed," Lamberth's ruling said. "It is not limited to prohibit federal funding of only the 'piece of research' in which an embryo is destroyed. Thus, if ESC [embryonic stem cell] research is research in which an embryo is destroyed, the guidelines, by funding ESC research, violate the Dickey-Wicker Amendment."

Maybe these outraged liberals on this blog could offer up their own babies as sacrificial lambs for curing adult disease–embryo's are as innocent as they come–what a horrible thing to know that a baby had to die to save a life! How do people sleep at night condoning such things?

For every conservative activist judge, there are 10 liberal activist judges. It sucks, doesn't it liberals! Now you know how the country felt when a liberal activist GAY judge ruled against the majority on gay marriage, trying to say there was protections in the constitution, basically lying through his teeth.

Uh, you do realize that these "babies" would just get thrown in the garbage if they weren't used for research. But I guess that's better than potentially saving lives or curing disease. Pro-life, indeed. Have a nice day!

Republicans only care about the Life of an Embryo until it becomes a person. They, it's on it's own!!!!

As far as I know, embryonic stem cells only come from abandoned embryos that will never see the light of day. And since embryos feel no pain (as opposed to the people suffering from, say, ALS), I don't see the problem in using them for medical research. I think it's more humane to use embryos, than it is to experiment on helpless animals!

Correction: The majority of Californians voted against the Constitution and one SANE judge protected it from them.

Those ballots were invalid before they even checked the box marked "bigot."

I wish the religious right would put their own health and well being where their mouth is. Let's make them pledge, in every election this year, that they will never be a recipient of a stem cell treatment for any illness they suffer in their lifetimes. Make them pledge they won't seek stem cell treatments for their children as well. Hypocrites!

I have MS. I am blind in my left eye due to the scarring of the optic nerve. Today, I can walk. Tomorrow, as always is for me, a crapshoot. I would like to thank this judge for valuing the life of people that never were over people that are.

adult stem cell research has made more inroads in finding cures for diseases. the left wont admit it bcuz they get turned on by dead babies, but even science has come to show the limits of embryonic stem cell research. what has it cured? what has it come close to curing? as 4 being born just to go die in war, NEWSFLASH our military is made up of civilians who volunteer for service. they then go out and change the world for the better. less than 100 percent of soldiers die. 100 percent of aborted babies die. dems sound pathetic when tryng to b sanctimonious about life

If embryonic stem cell research was as promising as some believe there would be no need for government funding. A major drug company would do their own funding and keep the patents on the discoveries they made and really get rich.

How nice for the Republicans to provide the Democrats another wedge issue for the fall elections. Give Republicans a little rope and they can't help but hang themselves.

great job judge...next the banning of polio vaccine...and why are the antibiotics stil around...they're "anti-biotics", i.e. anti-life. How long the religious right is going to put up with that crap? As long as they’re healthy???

I agree with the poster who said that any treatment that has been put in place due to stem cell research, should be withheld from those who oppose stem cell research. If you choose to let a curable illness kill you, that's your choice, but don't make that choice for the rest of us. This is why some of us are so angry; we don't want to go back to the dark ages; keep your religious views out of politics and certainly not in the way of cures for diseases. It does appear that Repubs. support embryos until they're born.

I would not force any Republican to take any medical prescription based on stem cell research. I say let them live in the 14th Century.

Why do the Republicans think it is ok to force a situation that would prevent me from using the outcome of good science because they believe one section of their bible and not another?

Seems crazy to me, but then my mind is firmly in the 21st century.
