Washington (CNN) - The Rev. Al Sharpton and a range of activists on Saturday fervently marked the 47th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech and some delivered pointed remarks about conservatives rallying nearby at the site where King delivered his seminal address.
Sharpton spearheaded the "Reclaim the Dream" rally at Dunbar High School in northwestern Washington, addressing a throng that later embarked on a march to the planned King memorial after they listened to speaker after speaker extol the virtues and visions King stood for.
Sharpton and others couldn't resist discussing the controversial event at the Lincoln Memorial organized by conservative talk show host Glenn Beck, a rally Beck called "Restoring Honor." Beck, who has a program on Fox News as well as several radio programs, was criticized for holding his rally at the site of King's speech on the anniversary.
"They may have the mall," Sharpton said, "but we have the message. They may have the platform but we have the dream."
If Glenn Beck read the 'I have a Dream" speech in its entirety to his crowd, the entire purpose of the rally would be defeated.
The dream of equality and justice is the antithesis of the coded "Restore America to its former values" statement, which essentially means "let's bring back the 50"s.
I do believe that Dr King was a man that wanted equality for everyone
But, I don't ever recall him saying sit on your ass and let the government do everything for you.
The loathsome Beck has earned all the criticism and more. He's a liar and hypocrite who doesn't hesitate to "play the race card." And for all his anti-Islamic center rants, he's mighty hypocritical to be so insensitive to those who know MLK was the polar opposite of Beck with his belief in social justice. Alveda is a clueless publicity hound who knows little about her uncle.
Please explain to me how someone who has called our President a racist (his mother was white!)and whose "saviour", Sarah Palin, claimed that Obama "pals around with terrorists", is any kind of honest broker/messenger. I even share some of Beck's concerns, but who he chooses to blame for our predicament is factually incorrect and unfortunately leads his followers/listeners down the path of ignorance and hatred. Remember: TARP originated under Bush. For someone that hit bottom as did Beck, his sensitivities to the needs of those less fortunate is soarly lacking. He believes we're babying folks by making health care more readily available and that health care is not a right, but a priviledge. Glenn Beck used to be an extremely funny entertainer with some interesting and even-handed views/observations. He now takes himself way too seriously and has the arrogance to presume that he has the answers. I repeat: Sarah Palin symbolizes his solution to this country's ills! Enough said.
"I have a Dream" that Sharpton and the NAACP will fall off the face of the earth!!!
Instead of embracing one another as fellow Americans, leave it to the likes of Al Sharpton to try and create division. No Al, Dr. King would not be proud of you at all. You are disgrace, a racist and a divider.
Why does anyone listen to Al Sharpton?
Hmm...everyone around him is the same color...wasn't that one of his complaints about Beck?
Hmm...he is espousing a political view on the anniversary of MLK's speach...wasn't that one of his complaints about Beck?
I hate this hypocrite!
Hey harpton, You're a racist fool ! Grow up. You're not the only one who can hold a rally in this country. Go Beck!
