(CNN) - Texas Gov. Rick Perry essentially closed the door on a 2012 bid for the Republican nomination for president last week at rally held for his gubernatorial campaign.
"I have no intention to go to Washington, D.C.," Perry said, according to The Texas Tribune. He added: "Except maybe to go to a museum, like the Smithsonian."
Perry's spokesman, Mark Miner, confirmed the quote's accuracy for CNN.
Perry, the longest-serving governor in Texas history and a staunch conservative, is running for an unprecedented third term in office. He had been touted as a possible contender for the Republican Party's nomination for president in 2012.

What a relief. We already had one phony conservative in the white house (Bush) and another try to make her way in (Palin). We don't need another phony conservative in the white house to spend like crazy but don't have any plans to cover that spending.
Like he has a shot. he wanted TX to secede from the Union. Sad. Just another republican who wanted to shy away and not work the better good for the whole. However, with that said, I wish he would run. its been an amazing trip to listen to the far rights rhetorics. Quite and eye openers these past couple of years. Thought the 8 years before were extreme. Bush is looking good with these new crops of potentials.
Too busy plotting Texas' "secession from the Union", no doubt.
I think it would tough to explain running for President of a country you've talked about seceding from.
How could he or anyone else consider his running for the Presidency of the United States of America when he has spoken publicly about Texas seceding from the United States of America?!
One after the other they are going to denounce their intention to run for President. In the end we will end up without any GOP Candidate. Beck's rally was too scary to some.
Maybe Perry is looking for an even higher office: President of the Republic of Texas.
I wish him well, and, as a former Texan, would be pleased to become a citizen of that republic.
Too many skeletons in the closet, perhaps?
An excellent idea. We certainly don't need another GOP (Got nO Plans) idiot like Perry anywhere near Washington. In fact, I think Perry should take a vacation, starting today. Someplace outside the solar system immediately springs to mind - some icy planetoid out beyond the orbit of Pluto would be perfect.
If he ran for President , he would have to come out of the closet !
Well good for him! Bush the 3rd.
Let's see if he can remain the governor. Either his horrible economic policies led to the disaster facing Texas this biennium or the economy is simply bad because of the housing bubble and that then isn't the fault of Perry, or Obama, or Bush. It is the fault of people deciding to sell crap for a fast buck and then retire and leave innocent people holding paper with nothing but lies on it.
Too bad, it would be fun watching him spin his wheels!
This self interests, self righteous, total nit wit is not viable even as a dog catcher.
After allowing an innocent man to die to save his political future and calling for secession while taking millions and million in federal aid, Rick Perry knows he would be unelectable as President. We should all be very thankful of that.
