(CNN) - Texas Gov. Rick Perry essentially closed the door on a 2012 bid for the Republican nomination for president last week at rally held for his gubernatorial campaign.
"I have no intention to go to Washington, D.C.," Perry said, according to The Texas Tribune. He added: "Except maybe to go to a museum, like the Smithsonian."
Perry's spokesman, Mark Miner, confirmed the quote's accuracy for CNN.
Perry, the longest-serving governor in Texas history and a staunch conservative, is running for an unprecedented third term in office. He had been touted as a possible contender for the Republican Party's nomination for president in 2012.

Good move. But why are you running for another term as governor if you don't have Washington aspirations?
He would not do well outside of Texas. If he had it his way Texas would be its own country.
Thank God for that. Does he want to be President of his newly secceeded country? Please send me an address so that I can make a donation to his cause.
With talk like seceeding from the Union, Perry would not stand a chance of becoming POTUS. Keep the cowboy politicians in Texas, We're still recovering from the mess the last Texas governor left us.
""I have no intention to go to Washington, D.C.," Perry said..."" Thank God for small miracles.
"Except maybe to go to a museum, like the Smithsonian."
Haha...probably the only one he can name. Stuff it, Captain Secession, nobody in their right minds would consider you cultured unless they were comparing you to yogurt.
As someone from DC, we don't want Rick Perry to come at all, even to a museum. For someone who rants against taxes and the government he should remember what pays for these amazing places – taxes. Oh, wait. Didn't he rant against taking money from the stimulus package then turn around and take hundreds of millions? I guess he has selective memory.
Isn't the Smithsonian a little too much scientific and government funded for Republicans?
"Perry, the longest-serving governor in Texas history and a staunch conservative, is running for an unprecedented third term in office."
Anyone else notice the funny buried in these facts? Seriously? "Longest running" is two terms? LOLZ. Short memories. No wonder they can't remember anything correctly about the founding fathers and the establishment of our nation.
I am conservative, but happy to see that Perry does not want to pursue the White House. I am not a big fan of his, as he has tried to o many times to sneak and/or railroad bills and legislature on Texans. Even with my discontent with Perry, he will get my vote for Governor, because he is the best of the two choices available.
Finally, a bit of good news. No Perry is good Perry, so to speak. What a jackass this guy is!
The article describes him as a "staunch conservative". What's conservative about spending $10K a month of taxpayer money on his personal apartment? How many of his constituents make anywhere close to $10K a month, but he's "conserving" their money by spending it on a luxury place to live?
Then, ask him about his "central corridor" plans, where he wanted to rip a hole through the middle of Texas. Luckily, that got nixed. Basically, Perry wants to "conserve" all the taxpayer's money into his pocket, and those of his rich a-hole buddies.
He is unelectable anyway so this is not news.
They must be clearing the field for Sarah Palin.
Oh please! Oh please!
Thank God. One less loony in the race...now if someone could talk Palin into going home for a few years...
OMG, Another LOCO on the horizon??
spare us............
Good, because we have no intention of putting you there!
Now Perry join with Gov. Brewer and hound Obama to do something with our boders. Please make the presses quit calling the illegals immigants. That makes our forefathers roll over in their graves.
How dares any secessionist ever even imagine running for POTUS? Such people should be driven from the nation they would destroy!
Like this piece of garbage could ever get elected President.
Washington (aka Liberal Democrats) should come to Texas and get a glimpse of how to run a government that renders jobs, strong economy and a budget surplus WITH NO STATE INCOME TAXES!
When, I was worried there for a while. Not!
Bet he goes on a smash/slash/hate/lie campaign to get the big bucks when his term is over. Watch and see. Nothing positive out of any of the republicans, just hate, lies, fear, paranoia.
"I have no intention to go to Washington, D.C.," Perry said, according to The Texas Tribune. He added: "Except maybe to go to a museum, like the Smithsonian."
Perry – you need to be in the Smithsonian. You and your mindless followers. Please secede from us and take your small circle of supporters with you.
Thats all we'd need. Another "Chicken Hawk" governor from Texas as President of the United States. Hasn't the country and the world had enough.
Perry knows the vetting process will let all his skeletons out of the closet. Perry isn't good for Texas and he surely isn't good for the Nation.
