GOP claims Iraqi success despite Obama

Washington (CNN) - In twin speeches laced with heavy doses of "I-told-you-so," Republican leaders in the House and Senate tried to convince voters Tuesday that America's success in Iraq is not because of President Barack Obama, but in spite of him.

"Some leaders who opposed, criticized, and fought tooth-and-nail to stop the surge strategy now proudly claim credit for the results," said House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, in prepared remarks for the American Legion convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

"One lawmaker rejected the idea that the surge would reduce violence in Iraq, saying - and again I'm quoting - 'in fact, I think it will do the reverse.'"

The lawmaker Boehner is referring to is then-Sen. Barack Obama. Boehner aides said he was reluctant to criticize the commander-in-chief by name in front of a roomful of veterans, but insisted it would be clear who he was talking about.

Leave it to the GOP to try to take credit for ending the Iraq war! For once, they should give Obama credit for doing what Bush couldn't do! There is not one Republican who has the guts to stand up and say "WELL DONE"! They have done nothing but put road blocks in the way of progress. Did they ever stop to think that the public might think BETTER of them, if they stopped this foolishness and did the job they were sent to do,? They're like losing fans booing from the bleachers, when the opposing player makes an outstanding catch. The more adult fans would stand up and applaud a player who earned their recognition. Let's see who has the guts.

We talk about the surge, the success, the war has come to an end, brah brah brah, but no one is speaking about the war was just a war based on false premises which stole more than 4000 souls of our brave men and women in uniform. Infact the Iraq war perpetrator should brought to book and face justice!! for killing our soldiers!!! LONG LIVE JUSTICE FOR ALL!!!

I wish that "some leader or leaders" in the Republican Party or even members of the previous Administration can try to explain to me (or anyone else) – What was this War in Iraq really all about? It obviously had nothing to do with the security of our Nation, nor did it have anything to do with 911. Is it all about Oil and Greed? If so, then try and explain that to the family members of the 4,500 who have perished and the thousands who were seriously wounded. As of right now, there is NO SUCCESS to be claimed by anyone! I also strongly doubt that there will be success in the future and we should have realized this before we invaded this Country. The Three Major factions have been at war for hundreds of years – does anyone really think that this kind of "history" can eventually change – while it is a sad situation – this is REALITY!

Very disrespectful of the GOP! They should NOT have anything to say aside from what the PRESIDENT has to say. We elected him as OUR leader. The PRESIDENT speaks for US.

Ever since the POTUS was elected by the people and they were trounced in the last election they have been hijacking anything they would be good or postive for this country or it's citizens. Time and time again I have seen Dem reaching across the aisle only to have the Obstructionist Reps slap it away. Then the Reps cry, whine, spread lies, and throw tantrums.

I would love to see each one of them locked up in Gitmo.

I thought those in the GOP have labeled this war, "Obama's War."
NOW they want credit? Credit for what? the blood on their hands of our service men and women? the Credit for getting us into this god awful war?
    What is it??

The GOP needs to get real for once, they claim we needed to invade Iraq because WMD but the real reason was they wanted to control the resources. That is why we still have 50k troops still there, they wanted a hand in the oil.

I doubt that anyone with any brains would proudly claim credit for the fiasco of Iraq...except maybe a Republican. If Boehner wants to take credit for Iraq I imagine G.W. would be more than willing to let the history books show that.

The surge wasn't the main factor in quelling the violence in Iraq. Anyone that has listened to the commanders in charge thought the increase in troops helped, it was actually the US government paying tribal leaders to keep out the insurgence. When that money stops, so will the calm... It had nothing to with the chest pounding GOP rhetoric.

  12. The reality is...

Bush and our brave troops take the credit for getting rid Saddam and his regime which, was no mistake. Now we will see what Obama and his regime will do to help keep a stable atmosphere there and not allow terrorists to get the upper hand.
