Beck scoffs at 'lie' allegations

Beck is laughing at critics who are making a big deal over his 'lie.' at last weekend's rally.
Beck is laughing at critics who are making a big deal over his 'lie.' at last weekend's rally.

(CNN) -Glenn Beck is scoffing at recent attacks from MSNBC's Keith Olbermann and others after the Fox News host inaccurately told the crowd at his recent Washington, DC rally that he "held" George Washington's handwritten inaugural address.

"I thought it would be a little easier in the speech," Beck told his radio listeners Thursday as he dismissed the most recent liberal attack directed at him.

The uproar from the left came in response to a comment Beck made during his Restoring Honor rally on the National Mall last weekend in which he said, "I went to the National Archives and held the First Inaugural Address written in his own hand by George Washington."

Turns out the Archives' policy doesn't allow members of the public to touch rare documents like the First Inaugural Address. Instead, Beck was permitted to view the document through plastic – prompting Olbermann to declare "his story that he actually got to hold it…is wrong."

"His fib stands in stark contrast to the point of the rally, which was all about restoring the principles of courage and honor that the nation was founded upon," the publication Mother Jones chimed in.

But Beck himself didn't seem frazzled by the allegations.

"They are like, 'He's such a liar. Glenn Beck is such a lair!' said Beck laughing off the criticism.

"I thought I'd be a little easier than to say, 'Yesterday, I went to the National Archives, and they opened up the vault, and they put on their gloves, and then they put it on a tray, and they wheeled it over, and it's all in this hard plastic, and the because you're sitting down at a table and you can't – because of [Former National Security Advisor] Sandy Berger - you can't actually touch any of the documents because they are very rare'…..I thought it was a little clumsy to explain it that way."

"Might have been a little too much useless information!" Beck exclaimed. "Once again, they caught me."

This is not the first, nor the last, lie you'll hear out of Glenn Beck's mouth. Granted, this is a pretty stupid thing to gripe over. How about you guys report on how he likes to twist every view and opinion from a Democrat to sound Marxist, Socialist, Deceiving or Outrageous in some way, huh? Pretending like he's reporting "news" when it's really just his twisted opinion?? Come on – this guy is the biggest joke there is and anyone who believes a word out of his mouth is a blind sheep.

it is sooooo scary to think that people in the united states actually like this loud-mouthed idiot...all he does is cause fear, anger, conflict and paranoia amongst the less-educated racists who hate democrats/liberals or who hate Obama for what they perceive him to be...anything but an american. my god.....wake up america !!!

All of you who think this is "gotcha journalism" are missing the point. It's not "gotcha journalism" if there really is a lie.

If you talk the talk you better walk the walk, Dems and GOP alike. For Glenn Beck to mock the criticism he is getting for being casual with the truth when he makes that allegation against progressives constantly is more than just a little disturbing. He could have just said he went to the Archives and read the first inaugural address; instead he made a point to aggrandize the situation beyond what it was. Make light of it if you want Mr. Beck, but perhaps more than just the far far right would take you seriously if you just admitted to saying something you shouldn't have and owned this rather than acting like a snide hypocrite.

Most of you folks do not get it. This has nothing to do with "gotcha" journalism or liberal media bias. The bottom line is that you cannot give a speech about honor, faith, and honesty and then use a lie within it simply because it is convenient. And no, Obama does not lie 10 times a day every day. I read enough conservative news sites to know that this is not the case. They can and do call him out when he does. If people cannot stop playing the liberal – conservative game and tearing each other down, this nation is doomed. How can we expect anyone to respect us when we cannot even respect each other. This infighting, name calling, and partisan rancor is more dangerous than anything foreign terrorists can throw at us. This is America at its worst. It is American bringing about its own demise. Wake up!

So, he lies while delivering a speech about restoring honor, then tries to spin the lie to make it fit. Yep, sounds like a typical republican.

If you are trying to restore Honour, lying is a bad way to start and to the responders here, "birds of the same feather flock together"

Glenn is who he is, suddenly realized he is an anchor and attracting people, then went on a frenzy. Honour is a good thing when communicated from the right vessel, This guy is so tainted that his followers like that trait in him.

    Who cares who lies more?

Lying is wrong regardless of who does it or how often.

Do you lemmings really want to be told what to feel and think by someone who would lie about something as stupid as this? What else do you think he lies about? Do you think Glenn Beck or any of these super-wealthy self proclaimed "patriots" care about the average American. If so, I have some WMDs to sell you.

Gotcha journalism? I believe it's called telling the truth.

Glenn accuses Obama of "having a deep-seeded hatred of white people", he accuses churches that talk about social justice of being "communists", he thinks that liberals are to be compared to Nazis, and NOW at this rally he has on August 28th, he tells his flock that God is speaking through him? Now he's a self-annointed religious prophet to these masses of weak-minded xenophobes??? Give me a break!!!

In the eyes of his worshippers, Glenn Beck can do no wrong. The evidence of the brainwashing of Beck's audience is clearly evident here in this comment blog.

Anyone who claims that God is speaking through them, and who has millions of people serving as a loyal audience, should be at least taken with a very large grain of salt, and at most, seriously feared.

You know he could have just said " I went to the national archives and read Washington's first inaugural address written in his own hand" and it would have had the same impact and been factually correct. Things like this are what aggravate me about the right wing there is always some justification for their half truths and manipulated facts. My personal favorite fact manipulation is the tax cuts for the rich create jobs, which is a technical truth. The whole truth is that if you take that same amount of money and give it in tax breaks to the middle class you actually create a larger number of jobs. You will never here that though, instead they make it seem that the only way to create jobs is through tax breaks for the rich.

Perhaps Mr Beck did hold George Washington's addresss. After all, allowances were made for him to get to see the address when members of the regular public would not get the chance. Perhaps someone bent the rules and Mr Beck spilled the beans by accident. No matter what , the famous and well known have benefits the rest of "US" will never have unless we attain that position. The problem I have with all of these talking heads is that I don't believe a thing they say. I can look back and see how they have changed their posiitons to suit various situations and really don't seem to believe in anything that does'nt benefit them and their huge egos.

I despise Glenn Beck and his ilk for what they have done to civilized discourse in our great country, but Beck is correct to scoff at this non-story. Perhaps he didn't actually touch the document in question, but apparently he was allowed to get as close as any person without special training can. I'd brag about it, too. The tragedy is that some important progressive voices have briefly adopted the right's strategy of ignoring real issues in favor of penny-ante distractions, and folks like Beck will never allow anybody to forget it.

Boy, talk about making a mountain out of flat land. So, let's get this straight: Sandy Berger shoves papers down his pants and "It was an accident" is a perfectly acceptable excuse, but this is something to froth at the mouth about?

Its not a lie, its just an acknowledgment by Beck that he cuts corners to keep things sounding more meaningful. As Colin Powell once said, 'white lies are ok.' Now, of course, it is more powerful an image to use words like "held in his arms" vs. "viewed from a distance", but it cuts to the heart of the person's character, that they can't come up with more altruistic dialogue. That in fact, they admit they use misleading dialogue, knowing full well they may get 'found out'. Why not get the greatest effect possible when talking to the masses? Why not co-opt the speaches of a man who wrote specifically to gain equal rights for black people, who used the words black and negro often enough that you cant doubt who he was talking about, and since you can't get the man himself, get his recorded speaches and use his niece, while your supporters in the crowd boo him and rail against Dr. King to the reporters on hand. No, its not about lying or trying to mislead people, its about controlling the debate, the dialogue, and removing obstacles like "NAACP's" and "Shirley Sherrod Disasters". "If we own Dr. King's dream, THEY (meaning US – black folks), can never accuse us of being racist ever again." Beck plays checkers in a world where everyone else shoots with bullets. He is Walmart philosopher, better he stay there unless he reveal to the world he is an ignorant buffoon.
