Beck scoffs at 'lie' allegations

Beck is laughing at critics who are making a big deal over his 'lie.' at last weekend's rally.
Beck is laughing at critics who are making a big deal over his 'lie.' at last weekend's rally.

(CNN) -Glenn Beck is scoffing at recent attacks from MSNBC's Keith Olbermann and others after the Fox News host inaccurately told the crowd at his recent Washington, DC rally that he "held" George Washington's handwritten inaugural address.

"I thought it would be a little easier in the speech," Beck told his radio listeners Thursday as he dismissed the most recent liberal attack directed at him.

The uproar from the left came in response to a comment Beck made during his Restoring Honor rally on the National Mall last weekend in which he said, "I went to the National Archives and held the First Inaugural Address written in his own hand by George Washington."

Turns out the Archives' policy doesn't allow members of the public to touch rare documents like the First Inaugural Address. Instead, Beck was permitted to view the document through plastic – prompting Olbermann to declare "his story that he actually got to hold it…is wrong."

"His fib stands in stark contrast to the point of the rally, which was all about restoring the principles of courage and honor that the nation was founded upon," the publication Mother Jones chimed in.

But Beck himself didn't seem frazzled by the allegations.

"They are like, 'He's such a liar. Glenn Beck is such a lair!' said Beck laughing off the criticism.

"I thought I'd be a little easier than to say, 'Yesterday, I went to the National Archives, and they opened up the vault, and they put on their gloves, and then they put it on a tray, and they wheeled it over, and it's all in this hard plastic, and the because you're sitting down at a table and you can't – because of [Former National Security Advisor] Sandy Berger - you can't actually touch any of the documents because they are very rare'…..I thought it was a little clumsy to explain it that way."

"Might have been a little too much useless information!" Beck exclaimed. "Once again, they caught me."

Shame on you Keith. Sounds just like you. Your ratings are so bad you would steep to anything to try to help you. It's not going to work with us. Looking forward to November so we can vote all of you out of office and your jobs. Sorry Keith you might be looking working for work after November.

Its comical how some of you blame the media for what everything. Facts are Beck did tell a lie...and if it was Obama or any of the so called "liberals" Beck along with you would be doing the same thing Olbermann and others are doing calling out Beck. So stop being hypocrites.

Beck is so full of himself its sickening..and trust me no one is afraid of Glenn Beck. He's an opportunist like alot of the far left and far right folks are. Some of the same stuff he is deploring now he was defending with the Rebuplicans were in office...

And since Obama lies 10 times a day, what were the 10 today??

CNN, you've really reviewed these comments? and yet you leave the comment from "Molly" advocating sterilizing people?

There are no "lies" when it's a republican doing the talking. They invent their own realities.

It's not the first time for beck, and it most certainly won't be the last. The lemmings that watch have no problem with bastardized history or reality.

This is the reason only four or maybe five people actually watch Keith.I fail to understand why the left constantly is beating the right and not praising the glories of the left. Might be you have nothing positive to say about your side of the street. Someday everyone will wake up and realize that criticizing gets you no where but truth takes you everywhere.

Beck is to politics what cage fighting is to sports. In fact, it's largely the same audience.

My my my – where were you guys when George, Dick and company were lying about WMDs and Iraq? Apparently, lying doesn't really bother you.

Glenn Beck is a liar. He simply could have said, "I went to the National Archieves, and I saw Washington's first inaugural address." That ridiculous excuse he gave is just that – ridiculous.

Glenn Beck is the most embarrassing thing that could have happened to America.
Anywhere else in the world this guy wouldn't have a job anymore.

The point is that you can't restore honor by lying. You need to come at it with the Truth, and only the Truth.

Mr. Beck could have just as easily said, ""I went to the National Archives and [SAW] (instead of "held") the First Inaugural Address written in his own hand by George Washington."

That would have been honest, and just as easy as saying "held."

He had a good message. . . but he messed it up by muddying the waters with a dishonest statement.

Um....Beck IS the media. When you bash the "media" you are bashing Beck. Nobody fears Beck. He is just an entertainer. Nothing more. Nothing against that. Just pointing out the facts.

Its funny, when you can factually demonstrate that Beck is lying.....just like now, his Beckerheads come out point the finger at everyone else. "but Obama lies, so and such lies and on and on." Where is your EVIDENCE, you wing nut loons?? Cite your sources! Oh that's right you can't.....you set up straw man and ad hominum arguments to deflect the issue. The issue is Beck was lying....again and was caught. Don't make excuses for him. In case you forgot, a lie is when someone knowingly states something as a fact they know not to be true.....so this fits the definition of a lie. This has nothing to do with "gotcha" journalism. This is one instance in many where Beck has lied to people to get an emotional response from the vapid masses who think he is more than what he is....a ratings mongering con man. Wake up you Kool-aid drinking simpletons.

Let's face it, everybody lies. The problem here is that when you are holding a rally for "honor" and you are proclaiming a "higher morality" than the other party and having christian values unlike the other party, then you should live up to what you proclaim. So yes, a lie is a problem here.

I don't see why people are surprised. Beck distorts American history all the time because it suits his purpose; why not his personal history too?

For instance, for all he says about the US being founded as a Christian nation, George Washington himself (along with John Adams and the rest of Congress) wrote in the late 1700s: "the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion". Seems pretty clear to me what the Founders intended, but that doesn't fit with what Beck would *like* history to be. So I wouldn't pay much attention to his statements of what he might call fact.

Why didn't Beck just say, "I went to the National Archives and SAW the First Inaugural Address written in his own hand by George Washington."

He's a freakin idiot. As for all of you bashing CNN, at least they reported Beck's side of the story. They didn't convientiently leave out the other sides like Fox often does.

You teabaggers are right. Looking at a document though thick plastic is exaclty the same as holding the original document in your hands. If you want to look at the document, it is imaged online. The National Archives did not put the address behind plastic because of Sandy Berger... That document has been under plastic since long before Berger's actions. Just another example of Beck making sh88 up to suit his right wing adgenda. You have been listening to too much Beck/Limbaugh. You scream "Obama lies", but how about giving a few examples. Should be pretty easy if he does it 10 times every day.

Well, well, well! There is a reason I spend more time on MSNBC, they do not allow folks to represent themselves incorrectly. I guess I must rely on Keith and RACHEL for more scrutiny of the New Right, something that I trust is not a part of your format,

I can't believe there are so many Americans listen to what Glen Beck, Sarah Palin, Russ, and Bill O'Reily are saying. They must be laughing at you and all the way to the bank. They know by stirring up non-sense and in the past National Security concerns will only get them richer. Wake up America – Take back your Country and stop listening to them.
