Washington (CNN) – Just four in ten Americans say they approve of the job President Barack Obama's doing on the economy, according to a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation national survey. The 40 percent who give Obama a thumbs up is a new low for the president in CNN polling.
The survey indicates that 59 percent of the public disapproves of how the president's handling the economy.
According to the survey, 93 percent of Republicans say they disapprove of how the president's dealing with the economy, with 72 percent of Democrats saying they approve of the job Obama's doing on the issue. Two-thirds of independents questioned say they disapprove, with 32 percent giving the president a positive grade.
"There is also a big gender gap on that question," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Some 45 percent of women and only 34 of men approving of Obama's track record on the economy."
The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted September 1-2, with 1,024 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

40 % overall approve of Obummie's handling of the economy. UNBELIEVABLE!!! Here is the reason....72% of all dumbocraps approve of Obummie's handling of the economy. I bet you that 70% of that 72% are the 99 weekers on unemployment or are on welfare. Anyone that is paying taxes are disgusted by his job killing socialist policies.
In this age of "instant gratification" (started with those Polaroid Instant Cameras) – people are disappointed the recession (which could have slid into a depression) isn't "all better" now.
Yes, the President is struggling. Yes, it may take longer to clean up the republican mess. But I seldom hear anyone posting that McCain/Palin would be doing anything different of anything better. Phil Grahman, the architect of part of this economic fiasco was McCain's choice for economic adviser ....
What is the republican vision to pull us out of this slump? John Boehner was asked what the Republican agenda would be if they won election The man smugly replied, “TBD" = “To be determined!”
Wonder how the dumbocraps are going to spin this? 40% of Americans are smart and understand what is going on. Or 60% of Americans are stupid or racist and are after Obummie. You pick...gee option 1 says that Obummie fooled at least part of the ignorant Americans and got elected. Option 2 says there are more racist now than when he was elected.
.............................OR.................................................................................
Best bet.............Obummie's policies suck!!!!!
Oh my, worse poll numbers then George W Bush, hmmmm. Guess people are waking up to the bumbling left wing lunatic populating the white house! One and Gone!
Why don' t they ask if people approve of what the Republicans are doing on the economy? Congress controls the purse strings. The Fed controls the money supply. What do people think the President is going to do with the Republicans obstructing and pointing fingers even though they helped cause the mess? The GOP'ers would destroy our country to hopefully score some political points.
I am sick and tired of these people who continue to put down the President about the economy.
First of all, the rethugs were the ones who didn't want to extend unemployment benefits and help for first responders on 9/11.
The previous administration, yes, we still need to blame the shrub, was the one who tanked our economy. It took EIGHT LONG YEARS for them to screw the country.
You cannot turn around things in two years. We need to understand that the economy is like gaining weight. You didn't put it on in one weekend. It probably took years and now you have to spend months/years taking it off.
59% of Americans get 99.99% of their information from bobblehead dolls on the evening news who don't know squat about anything substantive. The stenographic corps, formerly known as journalists, think that a skeptical question equals a tough question. Then they repeat the latest talking point from Mitch McConnell if they have video to go along with it, otherwise it's on to important stuff, like Lindsey Lohan or who's replacing Simon Cowell.
Ted Baxter says the economy sucks, so the economy sucks. Now on to something I can understand. Who's going to be kicked off "Dancing With the Stars?"
I read that he is so tired from stealing our money and his vacations he has to take another vacation. Then again it could be he went to Camp David to rest up for the bowing and foot kissing he has to do Monday for his labor bosses. He stole $1 trillion dollars for them through the stimulus, but he still has to pay homage to them rather than the rest of us who actually work and pay taxes and don't destroy companies.
How can 72 percent of democrats approve of the job this president is doing? Are they blind?
No surprize here, spending like a madman, making promises he had no intention of keeping suchas earmarks. No one on his staff has real world experience. Comprimising greatly on health care and did I mention spending!
I believe the summer recovery is off the schedule now that the economic conditions are coming to the people's attention. The only thing holding up the stock market is the positive spin that the folks at CNBC that put on every economic story that comes out. i suppose there are enough folks that work at that nework that have a vested interest in promoting Obama's agenda.
The party of No will always say No to anything that Obama does. I did the same thing with the "worst president ever", bush!
There is nothing that Pres.Obama can do that would stop the T.E.A. party from making him the worst president this America has had.TEA stands for Terrible Evil Americans.God have Mercy on America.
They found 4 people out of 10 that approve??? That is shocking.....
If these are the numbers coming from a CNN liberal slanted poll. I imagine it would be worse for Obama if the resposes came from a true sample of Americans.
The President can't do it alone. Democratic representatives appear to be working against him and us. We worked hard to get them into office to change the downward spiral but they're voting against the policies that they ran on. It's no wonder that voters get discouraged. If Democrats lose in Nov, it's because Democratic voters feel like the hard work was a waste of time. They betrayed our Democratic principles. Republicans will just cut taxes for the rich and the middle class will continue to decline but at least we know what to expect from them.
I have one question for CNN & all other major media. Has there ever been another President, who has been polled on a daily basis as much as President Obama ????????
Obama has a problem with independents because he is perceived to be irresponsible with spending. The 2009 budget, which tripled the deficit from 2008, was in place before the 2008 election, because the 2009 fiscal year started on October 1, 2008, but few people know that. Most people assumed that the 2009 deficit of 1.4 trillion came from the stimulus program, but spending on the stimulus, which is spread over 2009-11, accounted for only 7 percent of the deficit. Most of the deficit comes from the recession, which caused a collapse of tax revenues, and continuation of Bush-era policies- the Bush tax cuts, the two wars, and Medicare Part D.
Obama needs to focus his message on economy. He needs to continue to push for the small business aid bill, and keep hammering home the fact that the bill provides loans to small businesses, not bailouts, and is fully paid for in the budget. He needs to point out the private sector has averaged a gain of 100,000 jobs a month this year- not great, but better than the way it was at the end of the Bush presidency, when the economy was losing 700,000 jobs a month. Finally, he needs to let the Bush tax cuts expire for families making over $250,000. The Bush tax cuts are still in effect, but they have not create jobs the last two years. Letting the Bush tax cuts expire for families making over $250,000 will cut the deficit immediately.
Oh Mr. President voted for you and was so thankful that you won because I cannot imagine a world with John McCain as President and the Wasilla hillbilly as Veep-a war with Iran, a deep depression, that followed tax cuts for everyone that were not paid for. But sir you have let me down. You have allowed the minority party of NO to control everything. You wasted one year actually thinking you could convibce them to work with you when it was obvious from day 1 that was not going to happen. They did not care if the average Am erican suffered – they are rich and their supporters are rich and the heck with the middle class. All they care about is defeating you and your agenda. Well guess what – they have done it with the help of the bottome feeders from Fox. You have done nothing to stop them. You will not take a stand and stick to it you will not fight back but when you attempt to you often look foolish. Now all your time is devoted to the middle east talks. When are you going to stay in Washington, and work on the economy. You have never stopped campaigning since you won the election. You have never made the transfer from campaining to the Presidency. Maybe if you would stay in town and work on the economy and find a way to pass needed legislation by reconcil iation if necessary you might get something done. Keep on the way you are going and we will be looking at President Jeb Bush in 2012. Wake up sir and do your job before it is too late.
I don't believe in polls. Just because 1024 people were "polled" does not make up the majority of millions of Americans. Why even bother unless you utilize MORE people. 1024 is a measley bunch. You cannot even get a pulse...Beau Colby
The fact that you report solely this, and not that his overall approval rating is at a robust 50%, is revealing.
Report the news. Don't try and drive it.
Keith has a very weak arguement. What an idiot to think that commen sense wouldn't be assumed here. I wouldn't think he would hold the documents bare handed. Duh, no brainer here,
We do not manufacture (mfg = jobs) anything in this country anymore. We are allowing our infrastructure to crumble because we'd rather spend a trillion dollars on an illegal war (maintaining roads and bridges = jobs). Older Americans have lost their savings and are being forced to delay retirement (retirement = jobs for younger workers). Many of the folks now complaining have been duped by the Republicans into voting against their own best interests for the past 30 years: Demonizing unions, tax cuts for the rich, opposing a living wage, corporations not paying their fair share of taxes, "wedge" issues, and arguing that corporations should be allowed to send jobs to other countries. What the hell did people think was going to happen?
Unless we stop sending jobs overseas for their cheap exploited labor, the economy will never get better, free trade should be fair trade. Go to your local Department store, nothing is made in America anymore, yet these same Clowns are running around waving the American flag, it's probably made in China too.
Obama's handling on the economy has been done to the very best to his ability. It is the very best that someone without any private sector business experience or even personal financial experience free of government entitlements could come up with. It is based on the very best concepts of his understanding of what makes the economy tick ideas that he an Administration comprised of 85% lifetime public service bureaucrats and collegiate intellectuals from Harvard law could make up. America deserves better, we ARE better!
2/3 of independents disapprove. Mark this well.
You know CNN, this is so over the top bad news reporting. Who cares about this story. Take a real close look at our current situation, who controls the house the senate and presidency. I think the vote will speak for the way the left has operated in office for the last two years.
Why no big headline splashes about the LIES by Barack Hussien Obama. From the economy to his religion to his associates he tells one lie after another.
CNN, ask him if Bill Ayers bombed the U.S. capitol and then ask him if Bill Ayers was invited and attended the inauguration.
I am curious as to what 40% of the people think Obama is doing to help the economy. The 40% on government aid????????????
The 40 percent that DO approve Bozo on the Economy are the same 40 percent of Americans that don't pay taxes and are living off Government entitlements paid for by those of us that do!
Anyone with any sense in this country is scared of the effects of Obama's unbelievable spending–so what does this idiot do? He threatens, yesterday, to waste even more money on creating even more useless-drone public-sector jobs the only effect of which is to steal money from working, productive, people and give it to the highly unproductive, or even anti-productive, drones of local government.
AFSCME cheers, SEIU cheers; the rest of us groan.
Republicans don't even have to campaign much this year–Obama is doing all their work for them.
The questin should be: What are the Republicans doing for the economy? Obstructing progress with a vote of "NO" is not helping the economy. The president is trying, but the Party of No is just that. Disgusting behavior on the Republicans' part.
Obama's Socialism-BAD.
Free-market Capitalism- GOOD
Enough said!
Folks, and it's going to get worse, at least blah–foons in Washington are replaced.
ThMain stream media, CNN thanks for giving us NObama , "Deep Throat" Biden, "Boblehead" Pelosi and the rest of their ilk.
It is a no-brainer that the economy is getting worse. Just in our neighborhood, there has been an average of one family a month walking away from their house. The more Obama reads from his teleprompter; the more things get worse. He needs to stay on vacation. If we have turned the page on Iraq; what is going to happen to the 50,000 troops, who are still there? Things are going from bad to worse.
Who knows how much government action can effect a largely private economy; that has been a question for the entire history of this country and before. What the government can do is establish incentives, try to stimulate aspects of the economy, and tweak what it can tweak.
By all standard measures the economy has been improving steadily since November of 2009. And the most positive sign is that almost all of the improvement in the labor market has come in the private sector. But it's all slow, while the recession was huge and broad-based–much more so that recently-past recessions.
Will the improvement continue? Will it accelerate? Historically-speaking, the odds are in favor. But who know? No one, really.
Yes, Obama is taking the blame for the lack of jobs. Heck, he seems to be taking the blame for everything. The GOP is very skilled at shirking any responsibility for where we are today. Very convenient right now during an election year and many are vulnerable to their lies & whiny rants.. They choose to complain and blame rather than be part of the solution. That's total chicken Sh@t and transparent at best. The Dems fault is not fighting back even harder. Obama will not be able to wave a magic wand to create jobs on his own, people. What do you not get about that? The GOP blocks everything because their sole agenda is to see him fail. It's a self-serving endeavor for power & control again and sadly it seems to be working. We expect quick solutions to complex messy problems. The biggest crime is the fact that so many are so short on memory they forgot who got us down this rat hole. Who's been blocking the jobs creation bills? Get real.
For the sake, of us all would you please report the poll's findings somewhat more accurately–4 in 10 OF THE AMERICANS POLLED approve of the job President Obama is doing and 59% OF THE AMERICANS POLLED disapprove. Given the sample size of the poll, this means that approximately 400 OF THE AMERICANS POLLED approve and approximately 600 OF THE AMERICANS POLLED disapprove. There are well over one hundred million voters in America and well over 300 million persons, some of whom have opinions but do not/cannot vote. This poll samples 1024 of them–hardly a representative or statistically significant sample from across the country. How can you, in any meaningful way, extrapolate anything beyond the fact that 1024 people answered the questions????
