(CNN) – Indiana Rep. Joe Donnelly has modeled his reelection campaign around an effort to ensure voters forget he is a Democrat.
The National Republican Congressional Campaign Committee is more than happy to remind them.
The committee is out with its first television ad of the cycle Monday that repeatedly flashes images of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi next to Donnelly – himself a moderate Democrat who represents Indiana's conservative-leaning second congressional district.
"Joe Donnelly claims he's independent. But he has voted with Nancy Pelosi 88 percent of the time," says the ad's narrator. "For the Obama-Pelosi healthcare plan, the Wall Street bailout, even the $800 billion stimulus that failed…Now Joe Donnelly believes he wants us to be independent?"
NRCC spokesman Paul Lindsay says the ad will run for a week in the South Bend media market and described the size of the buy as "significant"
Donnelly's own campaign has become a case study in how vulnerable Democrats are running this cycle: by conveniently leaving out the fact he's aligned with the party in control in Washington.
His Web site also makes little mention of his party affiliation, and, in a recent ad, Donnelly says he is running against the "Washington crowd" while showing an image of Obama, Pelosi, and House Minority Leader John Boehner.
Donnelly faces Republican Jackie Walorski, a state legislator and former television reporter. Recent polls suggest Donnelly maintains a double digit lead in the race.
In response to the ad, Democrats are pointing out one of the votes Donnelly is being targeted for - approval of the Wall Street Bailout known as TARP - actually occurred under President Bush's watch and was backed by the GOP leadership.
A spokesman for Donnelly's campaign could not be reached.
Joe is mistaken when he is not proud of what the Administration has accomplished so far. He should rather point that out and that the “Opposition” has not worked at all for the American people – not in the past and they will continue to work for all their “friends” and special interests in the future.
But, as the saying goes: The GOP is good at being bad and the Democrats are bad at being good!
I don't like the thought that voters can be seduced by meaningless ads that string words together to over simplify reality. May every person associated with the creation of this GOP ad someday be fired or divorced because somebody falsely defines them by one issue!
The true scum of the republican party is now showing and it stinks!
It's amazing how far CNN will go to paint a "negative" perception on anything that is relevant to Republicans or Sarah Palin. Did you notice that they run at least 3-4 Palin articles each week, sometimes one each day. While the economy crumbles and Obama continues to avoid addressing critical issues, he is never held accountable. November will show the true feelings of Americans, not just the few in the elite media.
And what do the Republicans intend to do? Any ideas? Probably not. Lets have some more tax cuts and borrow more money from China. Forget all the other problems and then invade a foreign country to distract everyone.
Lets get rid of the healthcare bill this is the stupidity of the republicans lets just keep on paying higher and higher premiums until we can't pay anymore then we will blame the democrats for the problem lets give the rich more money and maybe like a hungry pack of dogs they will throw us a bone just because we never had what it takes to stick together and weather the storm that we are in this is great the rest of the world is moving forward and we keep going backwards
Warning: Run an attack ad, kiss my vote good-bye. Thats how I'm rolling this time.
