White House blasts Florida church's plan to burn Qurans

Washington (CNN) – A Florida church's plan to burn copies of the Quran on the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks is a "monumentally terrible idea," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Thursday.

The "hateful" and "offensive" act would be a "recruiting bonanza for al Qaeda," would endanger U.S. troops and "goes against every one of our values," he said.

Gibbs said there are discussions inside the Obama administration about intervening with the Rev. Terry Jones, pastor of Gainseville's Dove Center, which is organizing the planned Quran burning.

Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell told reporters Thursday it is possible that a senior administration official will call Jones.

Obama said the Muslims have a right to build their mosque in lower Manhattan. It may not be right, but they have the right. The pastor has a right to burn the Quran. It is not right, but he has the right. A church also has the right to protest at servicemen and womens' funerals. It is not right, but they have the right. That is life in America.

Rev. Jones is burning the Quran because it does not accept Jesus Christ as savior. His nest scheduled book burning will be the Torah on Passover.

It's too bad that this little group of fanatics could cause all this trauma...but in a democracy you have to allow such idiocy to protect freedom of speech. Glad to see the White House is taking a stand against it.

You know this truly does not make sense in any way shape or form. I think that we would all clearly agree that this group is comprised of a bunch of religious based zealots that diametrically oppose Islam, sort of the mirror image of the Islamic fundamentalist nuts that blow innocent people up with planes and bombs. However, I am amazed that the Whitehouse and Administration are so eager to speak out against something as benign as a this when they are totally silent to a similar group of nutzoids regularly attends the funerals of our dead servicemen harassing their families and makes a complete mockery of free speech. I would agree that this is a stupid and unwise antagonistic activity but it is within their rights to do so, that is what makes us free. I would say anything that puts our service men and women in further or increased danger is not a wise idea. If we are to wage war then wage war or bring our men and women home!

I still think The Reverend's entire flock of fools should be held for aiding and abetting terrorism if any American missionary or tourist is killed in retaliation of his stupidity.

At the same time, Obama does NOT think that the muslims' desire to build a mosque at Ground Zero is inflammatory, hateful or insensitive. He11s bells, he even endorses it because it is "legal" and America is all about free rights! Ot at least it is about ONE GROUP'S free rights these days!

I come from the Judeo-Christian fold. I am disgusted by some of the bigoted comments I hear, against Muslims these days.

Look at those 50 clowns in Gainesville. Will people in the Muslim world look at them and say "oh, there's Christianity for you?"

. . . and what about these infantile comments about Islam encouraging violence, while Christianity is 100% peaceful. We can find many examples of "screw-ups" on both sides – why don't you ask Bosnian muslim women who had their husbands murdered and they themselves got raped by (Christian) Serbs? What about relatives of Pakistani civilians who accidentally got killed when unmanned drones (from the Christian USA) bombed them? Would we think it's fair if these Muslims said that ALL Christians and Jews just want to kill Muslims?

This so-called "pastor" is nothing more than a con man who got thrown out of Germany when his congregation realized he was on the grift and didn't actually care about them or their souls. What a revolting excuse for a human being.

I'd much rather fity people burning a stupid book than 50 terrorists in an alleged mosque near Ground Zero. Is BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA going to call any of the shady types behind that outrage and ask them to be sensitive! Maybe Americans should start to be EXPLOSIVE when their sensitivities are challenged by such desease as moslem types.

Almost a double standard, when they were buring our American flags overseas, we couldn't react...i know they all say "two wrong's don't make a right" but really, I agree with this Pastor,im currently in the military, everything we do produces risks but seriously look at it, we can't let them walk all over us,AMERICANS!

Just as long as he doesn't do whatever it was on 9/10 that caused Radical Muslims to attack on 9/11, or whatever caused the USS Cole bombing, or the attacks on our Embassies, or the '93 WTC bombing, or the London bus bombings, or the attack in Spain, or.......I think you get the picture.

Interesting how the Administration is taking a harder stance on this than the leaking of military documents.

Now, personally, I never see are reason for book burnings, or flag burnings. It's just not an appropriate thing to do. Like Obama's buddy Bill Ayers standing on the American Flag.

Make a law similar to the one pertaining to the desecration of the flag that protects the "bibles" of all religions.

What a surprise the Muslim in chief is upset over the burning of quoran. It is obviously a bad idea to burn the book but the president needs to spend his time more productively by creating jobs. It would also be nice if he would stop spending our hard earned money!!!

    "recruiting bonanza for al Qaeda"

Hmm, funny how Muslims didn't need a quran burning to recruit for 9/11. I'm just sayin...

I mean, come on, we all know Islam is a religion of peace and their cult members are willing to saw the heads off seven-year-old girls to prove it.

    Islam is a blast!

yeah, don't want to p!55 off the muzzies... they might get angry and blow stuff up, or decapitate people, or nailbomb pizza parlors... oh wait...

The first World Trade Center attack, the second World Trade Center attack, Beirut, the USS Cole and the Ft. Hood Shooting. All happened without burning the Quran. They want to kill us and it is not because we are free and it is not because someone wants to burn the Quran. They want to kill us because the Quran informs them that that is what "good Muslims" do. It is a religious war and until we understand that we are at a disadvantage.

Blast them! These people are evil.

    Evil people burn books.
    They're burning books.
In this case, we can safely say that these people are evil.

They don't care about the dangers they're putting Americans in.
