Schwarzenegger joke mocks Palin

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger took a swipe at former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on Friday.
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger took a swipe at former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on Friday.

(CNN) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger took a shot at former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on Friday, writing that he was "looking everywhere but can't see Russia from here" as his plane flew over Alaska.

The joke is an apparent reference to Palin's now infamous – and often misquoted – answer to a foreign policy question during an interview in the run-up to the 2008 presidential election.

"Over Anchorage, AK. Looking everywhere but can't see Russia from here. Will keep you updated as search continues," Schwarzenegger joked, posting a photo along with his Twitter message.

Schwarzenegger's flight was destined for Asia, where the California governor is on a trip designed to increase trade.

Actress Tina Fey and Saturday Night Live popularized the joke through its parody of Palin, in which Fey delivered the line: "I can see Russia from my house!"

But that's not what Palin really said. The full quote came in an interview with ABC's Charlie Gibson in reaction to a question about U.S. policy toward Russia.

"They're our next door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska," Palin said.

Reading through the comments is even more entertaining than anything the Terminator OR the Palinator had to say. I loved this one: "Hey stoopit! She never said that. It was Tina Fey. Stoopit, stoopit, stoopit." Classic! Thanks for the laughs...

Arnold I wouldn't be making any comments about Palin or anyone else. He destroyed the economy in California. At least she ran the corrupt politicians out of Alaska. And she will do the same come 2012.

Let's see... eight foreign consulates in Anchorage, 1500 mile border with Canada, major trans-shipment port, joint SAR capability with Canada, international fishing issues - but these don't count because of misrepresentation of a comment about visual contact between two islands. Face it, Governor Palin was the first politician who was able to criticize then-Senator Obama and not be accused of being a racist - that is why the media had to take her down.

Palin and smart should not be used in the same sentence. She would be pummeled by Putin, and should not be given a chance to prove it. We need leaders who have stellar intellect as well as stalwart principles – both should be required – anyone who gets "tricked" by a question on what she reads (Dr Suess would be a good guess for her) should not be considered. Why are we excusing ignorance in her case.

Anyone who thinks Palin is a viable candidate is dumber than a rock. she has NO IDEA about foreign policy, she doesn't even know most of the foreign countries. She is such a joke, and so is any hillbilly that supports her.

Funny, but he'll probably end up apologizing and retracting or some such cravenly act. He should stick by it and keep digging.

"hmmm... Alaska – that has the budget in the black... and not nearly the high unemployment... vs California with the Terminator in power – who is in debt, high unemployement, going bankrupt. hmmmmmmm"

Duh... Alaskas has those characteristics because it has oil and a tiny population, not because of its political leadership.

Please let us know when you have a relevant response.

Some of the posts here are funny. How is Sarah smart? Smart are those who feed her "instant lines" and talking points. What are her proposals for government? Policy suggestions? Economic theory? The problem with Americans is that they don't vote who is smartest, educated and who can lead them out the ditch we are in. Americans vote who tell them what they want to hear. Worst, many times they vote someone because they feel they could sit down with them to have a beer, with no consideration to policy at all. How stupid is that?

For those of you touting alaska's budget situation, did you know that for every dollar alaska sends to D.C. they get nearly $6 back?! That probably has something to do with their budgets being in the black. Texass isn't far behind alaska in $$$ from D.C. If either of these states had to rely on themselves they would be third world cesspools.

What I find amusing is that Sara Palin never said that. That's Tina Feys line from SNL
Palin said.. "They're our next door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska," Palin said.
