Washington (CNN) - At the Faith and Freedom Conference and Strategy Briefing, social conservatives filed into the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC to hear from a who's who of conservative voices.
The group says on its website the goal of the conference was to "mobilize and train people of faith to be effective citizens" and "to speak out in the public arena and in the media on behalf of common-sense values." The event was put together by former head of the Christian Coalition, Ralph Reed.
Tucker Carlson was the first speaker of the day. The editor of the online Daily Caller began the day by lambasting, what he called, the liberal media and encouraging the members of the audience to stop complaining and start acting. Carlson, a former CNN commentator, was introduced as such and the very mention of CNN drew boos from the crowd.
Many of the speakers quoted from the Bible to make their political points. Ken Blackwell, the former mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio and current chairman of the Ohio Faith and Freedom Coalition, paraphrased the Gospel and John and told the audience they needed to stand up for what they believed , "It is time for you to put your candle on a candle stick and not stick it under a bushel, raise it high and say our God lives," he said.
Tony Perkins the president of the Family Research Council said to be pro-life and pro-family wins elections. "To suggest as some have that abortion should be sideline as part of the conservative agenda is not only morally wrong but also economically wrong." Perkins, a former Marine, told the crowd that, "Christians must not be seduced by the sirens who would tell them to put aside their moral convictions." That he said would be a form of "idolatry."
On the speaker's docket for the rest of the day: former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and Republican Governor of Virginia Bob McDonnell.
All i have to say how can you say you are a Christian one day and they spur lies and try to tear some down another day yes politics is one thing but Christianity is another, the bible never changes its passages to fit someones agenda.Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today forever.
I believe the right practices McCarthyism. (Which is a term used to describe the making of accusations of disloyalty, subversion, or treason without proper regard for evidence).
So much for the separation of church and state.
I am so disgusted by these so called "Christians". They prey on the small minded and idiots of this country! Anyone can spew hate and drum up fear. Just once I would like to see them actually say something Christian – as taught in the New Testament – and work for the benefit of the young, weak, poor, etc.
I would rather live a modest lifestyle if it allowed me to help better someone else's life, than to have riches and fame – but be ashamed of how I got them. Perhaps that is the difference between myself and these "Christians", I actually have a moral compass which works.
that's the problem with politics today too much religion in it.it needs to go.
It is amazing that people who claim to be followers of Jesus are so good at avoiding his example. If these so-called people of faith want to be effective citizens they should start by recognizing that we all have the right to our political views, whether or not they agree with yours.
I really sick of the GOP trying to make themselves out to be the party of Jesus.
They do anything they can to enpower the rich. They wage wars on other countries for capitalistic gain. They deny the basic rights of human beings around the world.
They call out the needy and blame them for being to lazy to work, try to deny them job benefits, health insurance, food stamps. They want to eliminate Soc. Sec. altogether.
They had eight years to further the cause of eliminating abortion and did absolutely nothing.
Sounds like the GOP had better come up with some new reasons they are the party of Jesus.
These folks think theocracy is the answer? Look at Iran.
faith & freedom??? BS!!! "faith" is keeping us from freedom and I'm sick of seeing the word faith being used this way, we should say, childishness or stupidity or gullibility or whatever word is appropriate for people willing to blindly believe a fairy tale they are told, get these idiots out of politics!
Bunch of Hypocrits!!!!
Jesus was a Liberal!!!!!
The Right wing nuts are way too stupid to see what idiots they really are!!!!
Basically...they traded in their white hoods for white tea bags and they're going to wrap them in the name of Jesus.
Wait til they're time comes to answer for their true hatred in their hearts!
Pity the fools.
Tsk, Tsk, Tsk
American Taliban indeed. Wrap themselves in the flag and qoute the bible, their view of freedom is just the opposite.
Wow a Democratic country built around Christianity. Where are the slaves? Will somebody ask Newt what piece of legislation he has passed since he wants to run for President. Everytime I hear his name the SNL skit comes to mind when he was sitting at the bar getting drunk while Clinton walks past him laughing at him because he couldn't get him impeached for Monicagate. Then he got caught with his pants on the ground.
Just a bunch of wingnut hypocritical fools . There was a time not very far back in time when those evangelical nuts used to dance with snakes . I think it was about the time that the evangelicals were getting a foot hold into the GOP and republican party that they were encouraged to put down the bootlegging and the the snake charming . They`ve taken up this abortion issue as a cause ,.... when back when they were in those " Smokey Mountains , and the Appalachian Mountains " all they knew was having sex with first cousins , sisters with brothers and fathers with daughters . They did`nt put down those serpents and become anti-abortionist until they were made to appear as though they were mainstream , and a voting block for the GOP .
you are right ABM
If they fight for Jesus like they fought for America and the Constitution put your money on Satan. Notice how many of them did everything in their power to NOT fight Communism. Some other SOB went to the jungle instead.

Some republicans can talk the talk, but, no way can they walk the talk.
But not some democrats?
Rangle –13 ethics charges
Waters–2 ethics charges
A dem in texas giving scholarships to her family members!
Geithner –great difficulty paying taxes
Daschle- tax issues!
I just proved dems have issues too! Some of them can talk the talk but not walk the walk either. Strange enough that was missing from your post!
The United States is a country of religious freedom, but not just for Christianity. When one religion takes over the government of a country, that country is doomed. That's why the forefathers of the US knew that separation of church and state was essential. These men were men of intelligence. The article states "Perkins, a former Marine" left off the obvious. He may be a former Marine but he is still a Moron. These religious zealots are all Morons.
The irony of the Faith and Freedom agenda is that, in fact, they want to limit the expression of faiths and civil liberties in general of people who happen to disagree with their politics or their interpretation of scripture. They are, in fact, advocating the antithesis of freedom.
To all of you left wing idiots. This country was founded on Christian principles. Our constitution was written based upon Christian principles. There is no such thing as seperation of church and state, that's a myth propigated by progressive godless clowns. The constitution ONLY prohibits the state from giving one religion preference over another. Our pledge calls us "one nation under God", deal with it!
bunch of one sided...fox news...ok, do not watch....they are thugs...like GOP bastards..
“Leave the matter of religion to the family altar, the church, and the private school, supported entirely by private contributions. Keep the church and state forever separate.”
Ulysses S. Grant and he was a republican
Yes, 'common sense' values... i.e. Be one of the 3 million (<1% of Americans) yes-men to Fox News no matter how many times they hypocritically flip-flop on positions depending on what Rush Limbaugh dictates them. Oh, and condemn everyone who doesn't agree with you 100% as an 'America hater.' Anyone who is not a pro-guns AND pro-war AND anti-gay AND anti-environment AND pro-tax cut AND Bush apologist AND anti-democrat AND anti-diplomacy AND pro-torture WASP.
I find it hard to reconcile being a Conservative & following the teachings of Jesus Christ, in word & deed as found in the Four Gospels.
