Steele defends Gingrich's 'Kenyan, anti-colonial' comment

(CNN)
- Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele said Wednesday that he doesn't believe former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was playing to lowest common denominator politics when he said that President Obama has a "Kenyan anti-colonial" worldview.

In an interview with CNN's Chief National Correspondent John King on John King, USA, Steele said he thinks Gingrich's comment, made to the National Review on Saturday, was not based on the president's race.

"I know probably some folks out there want to, but I don't see that," Steele said. "I know Newt. I know that's not his mindset on that. He's talking about a world view that comes from a different part, whether it's Europe, the African continent."

Kicking off his 117-city bus tour in Fairfax, Virginia RNC Chairman Michael Steele said he wants to engage with the Tea Party and believes the GOP will take control of the House and Senate as long as Republicans get behind their party's nominees.

"This is a whole different kind of feeling, politically that we've not seen in a while and I think it's important that we not miss that opportunity," Steele said. "That's my message. Stop it. Let's get behind our nominees and win the election."

Steele also had a message for naysayers, like National Republican Senatorial Committee chairman Sen. John Cornyn who questioned whether Delaware Republican senatorial candidate Christine O'Donnell can win a statewide race.

"I don't know if she can win until we try," Steele said. "How can you claim defeat before you attempt victory? This makes no sense. It makes no sense. So stop it. Stop it."

With all the stupid things Steele has said and done, defending this statement is nothing.

Mr. Steele, the GOP is using you, just ask J. C. Watts about the GOP. You friend Newt forgot one thing that America was once colonized by the British.

Steele, have you ever read the book "Uncle Tom's Cabin?" Sir, it is 2010, you really don't have to support every idiotic statement some nut makes.... particularly, if it is a bigoted statement about an African American who is the President!

Steele should just shut up and go away! This man knows deep down inside why he was chosen. Is he not shame? Who is going to employ this man after his term is up?

I think that Michael Steele is desperately adorning chameleon apparel so he does not appear to be pandering to the white GOPS by distancing himself from his black brethren while simultaneously sucking up to the white GOP by pandering.

Seriously Mr. Steele? People are ripping Forbes' magazine article that Newt is playing on. Both Forbes and Mr. Gingrich should be issuing apologies. Now you are on their band wagon. Shame on you.
Continuing to pile on the lies will NOT help you win this mid-term fight!
Pathetic! The GOP is continuing to turn on its own. Good luck come November. Get your resumes in order, your going to need them!

The fact that Gingrich said this in the first place and the fact that Steele would defend it does not say much for the GOP. They are so backward.

About time we had a president who has a different world view; who sees those in other countries as equal citizens of the planet; who doesn't arrogantly feel superior to those with less. It's about time...

Newt acts like a racist and Steele acts like "Uncle Tom". Birds of a feather aways flock together.

I really, really feel sorry for Michael Steele. What is a man who can't speak the truth and protects a man who has spoken his true feelings as Newt did. Mr. Steele you don't cover someone elses A when they won't cover their own. Regardless of being Dem or Repub, nobody could ever trust Steele or look up to him as a man.

President Obama said earlier in the week that the far side was talking about him like a dog, now they are talking about each other like dogs,...grraaw. I guess the old addage of "what goes around, comes around. Sowing hate and discontent beings on even more hate and discontent.

    Just my thoughts,

it was degrading a person of Newt's caliber to make such racist comments. I wonder what kind of constituency he was appealing to? For Steele to jump in and claim that he understands well Newt and defend him, it shows how far GOP has fallen to try all desperate tactics in the name of fighting Obama. I wonder they unerstand what they are talking about.

Oh goody, Mr. "this is Obama's war" is siding with the gingrich man about the same stupitidy different "thought".
Do these people think before they speak. gingrich has become the male half term governor except he was "fired" by his own party.
I hope that after November that some of these people go off into the sunset never to be heard from again.

Why are all the old and country bumkin people so obsessed with race? His comments were absolutely based on the President's race. The President's father is black and a Kenyan so there you have it. GET OVER IT! Yes it’s good to have constructive criticism but darn these guys are just plain ignorant!
I think people don’t realize that no matter what they say or do... it does not change reality or the fact that this guy as President has done a great job, so far dealing with the entire crisis this country was lead into by the previous administration. 2 wars, a recession of astronomical proportions, energy crisis, natural disasters, job crisis and wining back the support of all our allies we lost years before. He’s the Jedi warrior America needed.
