Washington (CNN) – Thirty-one House Democrats, most of whom face tough re-election bids this fall, have signed a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer urging them to extend expiring tax breaks for all income levels, including the wealthy.
Republicans also say the tax cuts, introduced by President George W. Bush in 2001, should be kept in place for everyone.
Pelosi and other House Democratic leaders have made it clear they support President Obama's proposal to vote on a bill that only renews tax breaks for those making $250,000 and under.
With the midterm elections less than two months away, leaders have not yet decided whether they will schedule a vote on the legislation before voters go to the polls.
Hopefully they wiil break with him on some of his other harebrained schemes.
Increasing taxes on people who create jobs right now would be the clearest way for Democratic politicians to show how very little they understand about economics and how little they really care about the high unemployment.
Come on obama, blame the Republicans because so far 31 democrats do not back your bill. If that does not work, use your old standby blame President Bush that even democrats cannot stomach your spending, seeing as how they very well may be fired this election if they vote for more spending.
Dems break with their party, surprise, surprise, surprise!
They have to keep the republicans happy!
Weak, Weak, Weak, Weak, Weak!
Some Democrats break with Obama, party leaders on tax cuts
Too bad they followed them like the lap dogs they are when it came to Obozocare and Cap and Tax. THAT is what will cost them their jobs. Acting independent just to get re-elected... WAY to obvious!
And they should.
What hapens when you can't tax the rich anymore.
The rich as you call them are the people that pay the most taxes so you lazy people can stay on welfare. When will people understand that the rich takes all the risks and we all benefit from it.
I don't think the wefare program was to last as ong a it has for people that have been on it most of their lives.
And I will BREAK FROM YOU in November.
I guess there are even a few Dems willing to sacrifice fiscal solvency for the sake of the upper class.
Just figure that those are the democrats who have been bought off by lobbyists and special interest groups (Rich)! We already know that the whole of the Republican Party has already been bought off years ago when they supported deregulation of Big Oil, Big Business and Big Wall Street!
Finally! Progress! I applaud these Dems for doing the right thing for job creators in this country and not killing them with taxes as it will result in more jobs! At this point, I don't give a rip what their motives are!!!! Convservative economics is the answer.
Who are the cowards in Congress who don't want the Bush Tax Cuts to expire! These are the guys that need to be defeated come election time. Unfortunately, they may not be challenged by another Democrat and the Republican candidate will win. Then the Bush Tax Cuts will NEVER expire. NEVER. Do we really think these tax cuts for the wealthy created jobs over the past ten years since they have been in effect?? Really? What "trickle down effect"??? I doubt it very much. Look at the mess we are in and because $700BILLION dollars that was unfunded and two wars that were unfunded helped out the Republicans – not middle income Americans. How stupid are we if we let these tax cuts go unexpired? It will cost us over $4TRILLION dollars added to the deficit over the next 10 years if they continue!! Please call your Congressman who is against the expiration of the Bush Tax Cuts and let him have it in no uncertain terms!!
The majority of Americans don't want tax cuts for the rich to be extended, and it's been proven time and time again that the rich hoard their money and don't actually do anything to spur the economy. Plus, whenver taxes are cut, the burden always falls on the middle class.
Example: funding gets cut to states, states cut funding to public schools. Now my low-income cousin has to pay $75/week to have her kid in "public" school because the school has lost funding. Do you really thing $75/week is a big deal to someone making >$250,000/year? No! Is it a big deal to someone making $40,000/year? Absolutely!
TAX the RICH!!! TAX the RICH!!!
REDISTRIBUTE THE WEALTH BACK TO THE MIDDLE-CLASS!!!!
Democrats – quit dilly dallying and do your job for the middle class!!!!
I am sick of these Dinos (democrats in name only) yea we have them too. If they don't stand for party principles why do they call themselves democrats?
I love it, "Some Democrats break with Obama"... like all the Democrats that want to keep their cush jobs of sucking off our money nipple. Easy to runaway from a failure, tough to admit it wrong and begin to do something about it. Vote them all out in 2010 and 2012, mandate term limits and campaign funding reform, America has to run the lobbyists and special interests out of OUR Government, WE THE PEOPLE, does not mean Unions and George Soros Corporations and it doesn't mean all the other Right wing favorites either!
We really have some yellow bellied democrats. Why would the richest of the rich need the extra money to keep in thier pockets.
Extending Bush's welfare for the rich tax cuts is unconscionable, especially for Democrats. Democratic office holders get pulled constantly to the right by the teabagging insanity of the Repugnant Party. Democratic candidates have always lacked spine (Alan Grayson excepted), and they wind up pandering to the right wing. They would do far better to stand up for principle. If they did, there would never be any question of supporting welfare for the rich.
Fire those democrats that are only worried about their jobs. Everyone's saying Obama hasn't done what he promised to do. This is one of those things. Obama needs the members of his party to back him up. Giving the wealthy continued tax cuts hasn't helped our economy in the past and it won't help it in the future....how soon people forget!
