GOP must keep its word or die, DeMint warns

Washington (CNN) – Republican Sen. Jim DeMint is sounding the alarm to the GOP, warning that unless the party can come together, it won't matter if Republicans regain control of Congress in November.

"If we get the majority again, even if it's just in the House, and we don't do what we say, I think the Republican Party is dead," DeMint told CNN's Candy Crowley, host of State of the Union and CNN's Chief Political Correspondent.

"The urgency for me here is the Democrat Party - and I know this sounds partisan but - are completely dysfunctional. They're the left of Europe," DeMint added, in an interview that will air Sunday on CNN's State of the Union with Candy Crowley.

A number of establishment-backed Republican candidates lost primary battles to conservative political newcomers this election cycle, as a wave of anti-Washington sentiment swept across the country. The movement has created a rift within the GOP that some predict will make governing more difficult, even if the Republicans have a majority.

DeMint has also incensed some within the Republican Party by backing conservative candidates rather than the GOP establishment's picks. He most recently endorsed Delaware Senate nominee Christine O'Donnell, who easily beat long-time Rep. Mike Castle in Tuesday's primary.

Frustration with DeMint in Republican circles boiled over following O'Donnell's win Tuesday night. One unnamed senior GOP aide told CNN's Dana Bash Tuesday night: "I wonder who Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer are calling first tonight – Chris Coons for becoming the next Senator from Delaware or Jim DeMint for helping to make it happen."

But DeMint -who has been mentioned as a 2012 presidential candidate– is taking a more conciliatory tone, telling Crowley that Republicans must unite around common causes in order to take back control.

"The Republicans are the only one who can carry the banner of what I think millions of Americans are saying - not just Republicans, Independents and Democrats - stop the spending, stop the borrowing, stop the debt, stop the takeovers. This is kind of uniting America," DeMint said.

GOP is already dead. The KKK, now called T-baggers and the religious fundamentalists took over. They killed the GOP a long time when McCain broght in Palin and gave the Grand Wizards–Mitch, Boehner, Demint the mantle.

The Tea party has taken over the GOP and is an extreme right wing party. GOP is no longer mainstream, The Democratic party is the only mainstream party left in America. The TEA party cannot be trusted with the future of America.

It's all a matter of perspective. DeMint thinks the Democrats are to the left of Europe because he is to the right of Ghengis Khan.

Wake up DeMint. It is the republicans that have caused the majority of the present debt! 2 of the largest tax cuts in history with no off set in spending. An expensive expansion of Medicare with their drug benefit with laws forbidding negotiating lower drug prices with not a dime paid for. Two ill advised and mismanaged wars with no bid contracts, billions unaccounted for and not a dime paid for. A doubling of the military budget, A total breakdown of regulations in the finanical sector leading to a global recession. Now they want to add an additional 3.9 trillion dollars to the debt to extend the unpaid for tax cuts. Then again, the republicans just ingnore the facts and watch false news and everything is then the fault of everyone else.

DeMint is a DeMoron, a William Jennings Bryan for the knee-jerk reaction set. The policies they promote would be the end of America/contemporary society as we know it.

I think we may see what Jim Demint is talking about in November. The Democrats did not do what they said they would when they were running for office in 2008. Let's see how many of them keep their job in November. Maybe Demint is wrong and the American people will re elect the Democrats in November even though they didn't listen to the American people and do what they said they would when they campaigned in 2008. American voters are going to give both Republicans and Democrats their report cards in November. It will be interesting to see how that works out. Democracy is the best system in the world.

What an incredible description of the Democrats. "Left of Europe" is as poorly descriptive as I've ever heard. Europe has had healthcare for its people for years, its taxes are much, much higher for the wealthy, Europe doesn't waste a bunch of money on a huge military buildup, nor does it pick wars with Arab nations like Iraq when they don't pose a threat. The death penalty is no longer used. I could go on and on. Demint obviously either doesn't know what he is talking about or he is a serial liar. This Democratic majority is more centrist than anything else and they have bucked the left wing of the party in almost every vote bringing on great criticism from the left who feel that Obama and this Congress are too conservative.

The news media, the Republicans, the far right nuts are all allowing the minority people in this country to be attacked by hate coming from the far white Republicans and you are all helping out with causing a civil war. Every news media have taken minority ‘s voters for fools, but in Nov. will we not let you and the far white racist in this country take us back to the uncivil life we have adored in this country. It is the media jobs to stop giving these racist Republicans all this air time to air their hate toward the minority’s voters. You all are guilty of allowing the Republicans party to attack his minority voter’s day in and day out. I can not even watch any of polically news media because of all the hate aired on these shows toward people of color. This made help the Republicans get their hatful racist base out in vote, but look at the long term demand this type of hate display daily toward people of color.

    DeMint is an absolute idiot.

He's just getting on the kook bandwagon, hoping that they'll see him as one of their leaders since he's persona non grata with the mainstream GOP

The Democratic party is what the GOP was in the 90s. It's the wacko Republican party that's gone completely loony.

The Democratic Party is dysfunctional because of the political terrorism of the Republican Party. The Republicans have done nothing to compromise and absolutely nothing for the good of America. They have stone-walled initiatives they themselves crafted in committee. After they all but destroyed our country with the greed and pandering to the wealthiest American fat cats, they now fuel the fires of the radical right-wing. The Tea Party is a behind the scenes tool of the corporate leaders of the GOP – and a tool they may grow to regret using. A moderate Republican can't get elected if the entire base is comprised of crazy, Evangelical old bigots.

Heaven helps us if this Tea Party crew gains power. Democrats and sane independents need to wake up, get enthusiased and vote against these extreme candidates.

If Christianity can survive schisms, so can the American Republican party. Humanity usually gravitates towards using two-party systems in religion and politics in order to maintain their fallacies. This has been a historical mainstay.

In 2008 we warned you that it was the beginning of the end for the Republican Party. Your house is dividing. Instead of putting those far right extremists in perspective, you allowed them to propagate lies. You know what the bible teaches about that, so there you have it. U reap what u sow. Harvest Time!

Stop the childishness. Whether you like it or not, it's the DEMOCRATIC Party. Bash your opponents to your heart's content, but please stop behaving like an 8-year-old.

Wherever Dems are DeMinted is RIGHT of Ted Bundy. He is the most opportunistic of the Repugnican right-wingers. If REAL Republicans do not stop him he will aid and abet moving the party toward both Fascism and Oligarchy and the next war will not be overseas.
