Gingrich declares dual threat of terrorists and Dem establishment

Gingrich delivered an impassioned speech before the Values Voter Summit Saturday.
Gingrich delivered an impassioned speech before the Values Voter Summit Saturday.

Washington (CNN) – Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich repeatedly brought social conservatives to their feet Saturday with an impassioned address in which he warned that America faces a dual threat from the Democratic establishment on the one hand and Islamic terrorists on the other.

“We are at a point where our establishment is sliding into policies of such disastrous impact that they will in fact fundamentally challenge the survival of America as we know it,” said Gingrich during his speech to the fifth annual Values Voter Summit in Washington, DC.

“On the one front we have a secular socialist machine led by Obama, Pelosi, and Reid, and on the other front we have radical Islamists who would fundamentally change this country into a system none of us in this room would recognize,” he continued to thunderous applause.

Gingrich, who has repeatedly acknowledged he is testing the waters in advance of a potential bid for president, largely stuck to red meat issues during his 30-minute speech before a gathering of activists who could play a crucial role in selecting the next Republican presidential candidate.

Gingrich also took aim at Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, who recently sent a letter to insurance industry leaders warning them not to "falsely blame premium increases" on the recently passed health care legislation.

“And if she’s going to represent left-wing thought police about Obamacare, she should be forced to resign by the new Congress," he said.

But perhaps the former House Speaker’s loudest applause came when he weighed in on the controversial Islamic center and Mosque proposed to be built near Ground Zero, declaring, “We as Americans don’t have to tolerate people who are supportive of violence against us, building something at the site of the violence.”

“This is not about religious liberty, if they want to build that mosque in the South Bronx, frankly they need the jobs,” he continued. But I am totally opposed to any effort to impose Sharia on the United States, and we should have a federal law that says under no circumstance, in any jurisdiction in the United States, will Sharia be used in any court to apply to any judgment made about American law.”

Sharia is considered the sacred law of Islam as set forth by the Koran and the Islamic Prophet Muhammad.

Gingrich also laid heavy praise on the “energy” of the Tea Party movement and its newest victor, Republican Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell in Delaware, who defeated longtime Congressman Mike Castle, considered a shoe-in before the election. .

“I would beg Mike Castle to endorse Christine O’Donnell because she won fair and square in a process of representation. But let me go a step further, I am going to prdict right now, Christine O’Donnell is going to win in Delaware.”

And he sharply derided Republican Lisa Murkowski, the Alaska senator who announced Friday she would mount an independent bid after losing to a Tea Party-backed candidate last month.

“Senator Murkowski is fundamentally cheating,” he said. “If she wanted to run as an independent she should have.”

Gingrich’s speech comes on the second and final day of the gathering and hours before attendees will vote in a 2012 presidential straw poll – the results of which will be one indication of which potential White House hopeful can count on support from the social conservative faction of the party that is so vital in the primary process.

Gingrich followed a string of speakers Friday who constitute a veritable "who's who" of rising Republican stars and potential 2012 presidential contenders, including Sens. Jim DeMint of South Carolina and Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, Gov. Bob McDonnell of Virginia, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana, Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, as well as O’Donnell from Delaware.

Newt, the lying hypocrit doing his best to spread fear and hate throughout this country...Sure sounds like what the GOP likes to hear.
While President Obama is urging our children to strive to do well in school and trying to see that everyone has health care and rein in the wall street execs who've put us in this mess with GWs help. Anyone see the difference???

Out of touch with America? So you all want Sharia law coming to America? There are those in the court system who think it should be applied in the US and this administration has their back. Maybe you all should consider living elsewhere......

Gingrich was thrown out of the House of Representatives by his own party, yet he's delusional enough and psychotic enough to think anything he says matters.

"...we should have a federal law that says under no circumstance, in any jurisdiction in the United States, will Sharia be used in any court to apply to any judgment made about American law.”

We do, it's called the 1st amendment, the same one that says we should not allow fundamentalists of any religion to use their sacred texts to supplant our constitutional law.

It's a sad statement about our educational system that this bozo can make these statements and still be respected by the average American.

More fear, hate, lies - more power-grubbing - more control is all the radical GOP wants. Make their corporate buddies wealthier by shipping OUR jobs overseas. Where are the moderates we used to have in that party??

    He's NUTZ.

Retire Obama in 2012 then send him to Gitmo to live out his retirement. That would be a taxpayer bill for Obama worth paying.

Umm, OK... The Muslims who want to build the mosque at the Ground Zero site are radical extremists who want to impose sharia on the US. No, no, no.... don't you dare build that site at Ground Zero but, meh, you can have the Bronx. Saying 'FU Bronx' would have been a lot easier. Just wait, that will change to 'FU working-class' if the radical fundamental christians get their grip on this country.

Keep spreading fear and lies, Newt McCarthy. He may have "brought social conservatives to their feet" during his fascist speech, but his party's policies brought our country to its knees! Thanks, Newt and the rest of the GOP/Tea Party/Theocons for high unemployment, the economic meltdown, rich Wall Street crooks, oil spills, tainted food, mine disasters, exploding gas pipes, the non-existent middle class! Thanks...for the gift that keeps on giving!

Remember in November: A vote for any and ALL Republicans/Tea Party Hatriots/ Theocons is a vote for destruction, ruin, and third-world status!

Who has ever proposed that Sharia law would be "used in any court to apply to any judgment made about American law."? Newt is the only one whose ever conceived of this idea. It's ridiculous; it's right wing extremist political propaganda. I've never heard ONE Democrat or ONE American for that matter, suggest such a thing. All I've heard is the GOP warning against it. What a bunch of fear mongering BS. Republicans seem to thrive on ignorance and they run hoping there are enough ignorant voters out there that will vote them in. Their view of this country is sad.

What America has to fear is a return to Bush-era policies?
    No.
All we have to fear is Barack Obama.
If Obama can take his agenda all the way across the goal line, America as it was will fall off the edge of the universe.
At the worst, a punishing terrorist attack in the name of any annoyed deity would probably be no worse than the simultaneous nuclear destruction of several major USA cities.
    We could recover from that.
If Obama stays in for another term, we may never recover from what he might achieve.
Why does Obama hate Americans so much?

What is he talking about? Sharia as any otHer religious set of beliefs and laws cannot be applied to US courts as there is SEPARATION between church (any church, meant as religion) and state.
maybe he should be worried about his fellow extremists social conservative...

Here is where Newt is especially correct: "we should have a federal law that says under no circumstance, in any jurisdiction in the United States, will Sharia be used in any court to apply to any judgment made about American law.”
Why? Because such courts are being imposed in UK, Canada, some European countries. Must NOT happen in USA, but is creeping in. A woman was denied a divorce by a judge when her husband said the divorce was not allowed by Islam. Judgment against woman had to be over-ruled higher up. Why did the judge over-rule our secular laws in favor of Islam in the first place? NEVER should happen.

How's that for Americans, sounds like Newt is ready to start World War III. I guess Newt said it worked for Bush and it will work for him. But let me tell you Mr. Gingrich, NEVER AGAIN.

Gingrich should slither back under the rock from whence he came.
Whether its his failed Contract on America, or his support of NAFTA, or the wives with cancer he abandoned, he has no place in American politics. Not even on the sideline...

Gingrich is nothing short of a traitor to America's Constitutional Democracy in this time of RepubliKlan-caused economic peril.

This slime ball should be deported to Iran or Burma, either of those tin-pot dictatorships are his kind of country.

Gingrich sounds just like Adolph Hitler when Hitler was ascending to power. It would be an honor for any democracy-loving American to spit in Gingrich's face for what he tried to do to destroy America.

Wow, this guy is delusional. A minor point, I wonder if it would be such a bad thing if American changed so that the people in that room wouldn't recognize it? Seriously, conservatives would have it go back to white men in charge, no matter what, the "coloreds" knowing their place, and only one religion allowed. Obama has scared all the racists out of their hiding places, and started a new era of McCarthyism. Good riddance!

NG is an alarmist, an opportunist and an all-around joke. These are serious times that need serious leaders from across the political spectrum. People like Gingrich on the right and Michael Moore on the left are nothing more than windbags that like to see their own faces on television. In my humble opinion they themselves are anti-American and I wish they would just go away.
